When myy dadd and I planted corn in he mid 1970's, we always applied crow replelant. t was nothing more than cressote. If we didn't the crows wopuld watch aand when the cows would wlk the row and pull up every plant and eat thee kernal of corn.
Those are the rear gangs of the cultivator. Their purposes is to cover the tractor tracks, which if left alone might encourage the growing of more weeds.

Trail plows , farming when this tractor was new 90 % of weed control was mechanical, stirring the ground was part of it
