Nourish Belief by Autumn Dickson This week, we find the well-known sermon taught by Alma about planting a seed of faith and nourishing the tree. Alma is approached by the poorer class of people who have been cast out of the synagogues because of their coarse clothing. Alma then begins to preach unto them, teaching them about worship and belief. Here is the beginning of the analogy he teaches to...

More interesting info, my 2cents worth to support his awesome facts, natives could cover 200 miles in 2 days by runners. A horse cannot do this. You can see my point. Runners up and down the Inca hiway, could cover a couple of thousand miles in a matter of a few days. The horses were a drag to them. The mongols on the other hand could cover several thousand miles in a couple of weeks. From Peking to Poland in 2 weeks.

I think maybe the most obvious reason the BoM creates this parallel is because after the Exodus the Israelites established judges with Joshua. Joshua and Alma as Sara pointed out are compared both being "young" Alma's name likely meaning "young." Alma becomes the first chief judge of the land. This transition of government to judgeship in the BoM likely needed some authority and precedent to validate the system!

"...they can humiliate and pressure you with questions you don't have an answer to yet." This is why the CES letter works. It's not about the volume of questions asked, it's that when you start looking for answers you realize that even after decades in the church, nobody ever mentioned this stuff or prepared you to answer it. It's wasn't actively hidden away, but it was intentionally neglected in order to keep the membership from being exposed to it. You realize that the Church has asked everything of you, but has never been entirely upfront about its own history.

There are some good insights here, but there are some problems with the speaker’s arguments here. One is that he hinges his arguments about the origins of the Gadianton Robbers on specifically metal armor. Metal armor would have been extremely impractical in Mesoamerica because of the heat and humidity. Any tactical advantage gained by being able to resist hits would be quickly negated by soldiers succumbing to heatstroke. What we do know of ancient Mesoamerican armor fits much better with the description in the Book of Mormon: heavy quilted long shirts, breast plates and ark shields made from wood, bone, etc. and head plates (not helmets) that were made from wood, stone, or bone. (Note Mormon’s description of injuries from head plates being split in half-- something that isn’t as likely with a helmet.) His assertion that heavier taxes for the war caused political and economic instability is quite possible (taxes to fund England’s wars caused the American colonists to revolt), but it seems unlikely that metal armor would have been the cause and that it was Captain Moroni’s fault for using metal armor. (Also of note, this is the second time that I have seen a scholar who is also a veteran presenting at a FAIR event who seems to have a chip on his shoulder about Captain Moroni and his respected status in the Book of Mormon while being a military leader. The level of violence, cruelty and brutality that humans inflict on each in war is very real and I believe that the emotional wounds that LDS servicemen Bear from war are very real. But I think Captain Moroni probably understood those wounds as well as our servicemen. I do not believe Captain Moroni was somehow immune from being emotionally affected by warfare but that is a different discussion.) The speaker here points to one incident of rule of law among the robbers as proof that they conducted themselves for honorably than the Nephites, but this is a real stretch because we simply don’t have enough historical evidence about how all of these groups were conducting themselves. Consider pirates in the Golden Age of Piracy where each ship is run according to its own rules. Just because one captain required all his men to attend Sunday services (true story), doesn’t mean they all did. There are times when he seems to be admiring of the robbers and displays a bias towards them based on other historical figures, though again, the actual historical record on this time period in the Book of Mormon isn’t sufficient to make broad claims.Another important part of his argument hinges on the Nephites basically were prejudiced against the Gadianton Robbers and that that was their main problem with them. While there are definite examples of Nephites displaying prejudice in how they write about the Lsmanites, there does seem to be something more going on here. First of all, just because the Gadianton Robbers were an outside group and the Nephites spoke badly about them doesn’t mean the Gadianton Robbers weren’t doing bad things. The European explorers, for example, had prejudice towards the Aztecs, but the Aztecs were also participating in brutal and violent human sacrifices. The record is fairly limited on the details about the Gadianton Robbers, but Mormon specifically focused on not disclosing their rituals. He focused on this repeatedly. He clearly felt that there was something in the rituals they were doing- not just the fact that they were extra legal or outsiders- that was so dangerous that it should not be disclosed. Lastly, from a theological standpoint the caution against the Gadianton Robbers was spoken by prophets in an official capacity. Though we don’t know very much about the Gadianton Robbers, the fact that the Book of Mormon prophets repeatedly warned against them and felt that something about their rituals would become a problem for people far into the future, should indicate that they were not a threat to be taken lightly.

I have studied theology and Mormon doctrine for more than 60 years and I am amazed at the ignorance here! I am well aware that Joseph and others made inspired exceptions to this priesthood ban up until as late as 1935, but these were inspired exceptions such as Christ made to the Canaanite woman after initially REFUSING her. However, this ban was scriptural, it was stated and confirmed with explanations in an official first presidency official doctrinal statement, it was taught by so many prophets, and Joseph Smith made the following statement that people like you never mention! "The curse is not yet taken off the sons of Canaan, neither will it be until it is affected by as great a power as caused it to come."!!! See Moses 7:8 and 7:22, snd the first chapter of Abraham which speaks of the " RACE" that was denied the priesthood!!! THINK!!!!!!!

These idiots should not blame Brigham Young! This ban and racial curse stated with Cain, Moses 7:22, and was continued through Hams fourth son, Canaan, Moses 7:8 and Abraham chapter one!!! This is a statement that your type always ignores from Joseph Smith: "The curse is not yet taken off the sons of Canaan, neither wil it be until it is affected by as great a power as caused it to come." If there had not been a legitimate ban, there would have been no revelation to remove it!! THINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

D&C 109: 22 And we ask thee, Holy Father, that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy power, and that thy name may be upon them, and thy glory be round about them, and thine angels have charge over them; 23 And from this place they may bear exceedingly great and glorious tidings, in truth, unto the ends of the earth, that they may know that this is thy work, and that thou hast put forth thy hand, to fulfil that which thou hast spoken by the mouths of the prophets, concerning the last days. 24 We ask thee, Holy Father, to establish the people that shall worship, and honorably hold a name and standing in this thy house, to all generations and for eternity; 25 That no weapon formed against them shall prosper; that he who diggeth a pit for them shall fall into the same himself; 26 That no combination of wickedness shall have power to rise up and prevail over thy people upon whom thy name shall be put in this house; 27 And if any people shall rise against this people, that thine anger be kindled against them; 28 And if they shall smite this people thou wilt smite them; thou wilt fight for thy people as thou didst in the day of battle, that they may be delivered from the hands of all their enemies. 29 We ask thee, Holy Father, to confound, and astonish, and to bring to shame and confusion, all those who have spread lying reports abroad, over the world, against thy servant or servants, if they will not repent, when the everlasting gospel shall be proclaimed in their ears; 30 And that all their works may be brought to naught, and be swept away by the hail, and by the judgments which thou wilt send upon them in thine anger, that there may be an end to lyings and slanders against thy people. 31 For thou knowest, O Lord, that thy servants have been innocent before thee in bearing record of thy name, for which they have suffered these things. 32 Therefore we plead before thee for a full and complete deliverance from under this yoke; 33 Break it off, O Lord; break it off from the necks of thy servants, by thy power, that we may rise up in the midst of this generation and do thy work. 34 O Jehovah, have mercy upon this people, and as all men sin, forgive the transgressions of thy people, and let them be blotted out forever.

When so many of the attacks are deliberately misleading, why should we take the CES letter seriously at all? We have a source that is proven time and again to be truthful, and we have another source that is proven to be dishonesty repeatedly. Is there a question which one we ought to believe or even take seriously? The CES letter has many more valid criticisms leveled against it than any church source. It is more densely packed with lies, half truths, and deception than almost any other publication in existence, yet we are expected to accept it at authoritative? It fails its own tests and is, therefore, nothing more than a poor joke, given in bad faith. Anyone promoting it should be likewise rejected as a purveyor of lies.

Thank you for putting this on CZcams! I grew up in Austria, and for 30 years I haven't heard about any conflict between my religious faith and science (I studied chemistry in Vienna). Only after moving to English-speaking countries (first South Africa, now New Zealand) did I encounter creationism. It spent the last 25 years fighting this fundamentalist thinking in religion. It seems to me that creationism is more prevalent now than a few decades ago (mainly "Intelligent Design", but also Young Earth, and even Flat Earth). Religious belief, on the other hand, is in decline. I guess it is similar in Europe now, but you also have to deal with the large influx of Muslim population, which is not a problem here. I belong to an organisation named New Zealand Christians in Science. We try to bridge this perceived gap between science and religion, but it is an uphill battle, creationists are much better funded.

So NO DNA EVEDIDENCE in Meso America is a better than DNA evidence from a questionable dating if the Kennewick Man? Basing your argument against Haplo Group X on the Kennewick Man is problematic. Carbon dating for KM range from 2100 years ago to 8400 years ago...literally all over the board. Referenced archeologists of course choose the earlier date to maintain their paradigm that KM was older than the modern Native Americans in an effort to not only maintain their narrative, but also control of the remains and discovery site. However, said scientists lost that battle in the court of law where KM, now called the Ancient One, was deemed to be a Native American. His remains were taken from the scientific community and returned to the local tribe for reburial. Should the earlier carbon datings be correct, he would have walked the North America about the time of Christ, which would not only challenge the ever waffling scientific community's paradigm, but also FAIR Mormon's. Tapir anyone?

I recall hearing about this before from either Brant or another LDS scholar, and so it's nice to hear it in this short clip, for easy reference. It is little details like this in the Book of Mormon that, to me, really help to reinforce the Mesoamerican model. And there are lots of such little details such as this one. I also look forward someday to finding out exactly what type of animals comprised the 'flocks' mentioned in these verses. Many folks automatically assume 'sheep', but old world sheep as we know them were not present in the New World at this time, so it must have been some other animal, perhaps a type of deer. Native American horses, also mentioned in these verses, were likely used as pack animals rather than ridden, as they were smaller than the equus caballus, or old world horses later brought by the Spaniards. They were likely either equus conversidens or else equus mexicanus. Since we are just now reading about this as part of this week's Come Follow Me lesson, it is very pertinent. Thank you for sharing :)
