Creatures of the Mind, Creatures of the Land: Artist Workshop by Sharon Chin
Creatures of the Mind, Creatures of the Land : Artist Workshop by Sharon Chin
For Malaysian artist Sharon Chin, nature isn’t exclusively reserved for leisurely pursuits. As humans, we are entangled in an intricate ecosystem, and non-human entities are ever-present in our surroundings.
This workshop was held on 8 June 2024, in conjunction with the exhibition “Figuring a Scene”. Led by Chin, this two-and-a-half-hour session invited participants to imagine an alternative way of inhabiting the world through collective drawing and storytelling. Together, they pictured the world becoming a realm where magic holds sway, and imaginary creatures emerge from the shadows.
About the artist
Sharon Chin (b. 1980, Petaling Jaya) is an artist living in Port Dickson, Malaysia. Her work includes printmaking, illustration, installation and collaborative performance projects, and has been shown in Malaysia and around the world. She has participated in the Singapore Biennale (2013, 2019) and the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Brisbane, 2015), and is a current recipient of the Prince Claus Mentorship Award for Cultural and Artistic Responses to the Environmental Crisis (CAREC). Recently, she has been concerned with healing the relationship between humans, land and place, focusing on the intersection of art, ecology and community organising in Port Dickson.

About “Figuring a Scene”
Discover a new perspective on exhibitions with “Figuring a Scene”, where we break free from traditional art history norms. Here, we believe exhibitions hold intrinsic significance beyond historical or societal contexts. Emotions, imagination, and sensory experiences take centre stage in our understanding of art, defining how we make sense of the world around us.

I dont think Luna is a hero, but he definitely is a brilliant painter. I just see him as privilege. He was able to live and work overseas and have networks. We have many painters who are very good but probably dont have the same opportunities Luna had. It is hard to see a person a hero the way he maltreats his wife. I mean in today's standards, you cant see a hero in someone who beats and kills his wife and worse claim in court that he is a sauvage, a wild man who cannot be held accountable for murder.

I'll be profoundly grateful if this series will lead to other vital and crucial aspects of SEAn art including knowhow in distinguishing Genuine from Fake . It's a way of educating art aficionados while forgery / theft not yet widespread in the region! God bless

Campbell once noted that myth can open the world to the dimension of mystery and metaphysics - ie to the realization of the transcendent mystery that underlies all forms, including aesthetic ones. Mr Tan engages with this mystery by personally reflecting on the creative principles of art-making (such as imagery, representation & symbolic expression) and the conditions of their constructed truth based on exaggerated primordial and biomorphic elements/forms drawn from idealised prehistoric Chinese culture.
