Lovely! Some elements of sansho 3 in here.
Who's that guy? Is he from cercle tissier Aikikai Aikido?
John Brinsley, Chief Instructor of Aikido Daiwa in Los Angeles, CA. His dojo is part of Birankai North America, Chiba sensei's organization.
Thank you for the instruction, sir. I wonder where Saito-sensei's "striking system" came from. Was it originated from the Yokogi-uchi practice? I follow Horii Etsuji-shihan, and personally I think the "cutting system" here makes a lot more sense.
I have to agree. I don’t know much about about Saito sensei’s sword-work, other than he said he learned it from O Sensei. I’ve never really seen much similarity between the sword-work of O Sensei and Saito Sensei.
Julian Frost, jr.?
Nope
SD Kenshusei told me they called Julian "Darth Vader".
Prince of Darkness.
Great to see. This was before I met him. So cool
Good
Thanks
Great work Julian!
Thank you so much for sharing this video!
You are so welcome!
Intense!!!
I find it very effective. There is no unnecessary movement here. A strike to the hand/wrist would probably finish the fight.
This is fabulous Thanks sensei
Thank you too!
Thanks a lot! Could you shoot and post on your youtube channel 12 jyo basics from shomem and tsuki ?
Sorry for the late reply! I probably will not do that, as there are videos available to purchase from Birankai with Chiba sensei doing them. The money from those purchases goes directly to help support Mrs Chiba. And who better to learn them from, than Chiba sensei himself? :-)
beautiful. something I will begin to experiment with. some wonderful ideas and techniques
Have fun!
Hi Julian! Awesome class, thank you for recording it and uploading to youtube. I am from Brazil and would like to know if you have more classes teaching Sansho 1, 2 and 3. Looking forward to train that a lot while we're in quarentine. Thank you again, I hope to one day train with you.
Hi Leonardo. I do cover Sansho 1, Part 1 in the second Jyo class. It's possible I'll make a video of Sansho 1 (parts 1-3) and Sansho 2, but I doubt it'll be a Zoom session, just a video.
@@JulianFrostAikido Wonderful! I am already excited to watch and learn more from your videos. Thank you Julian!
I had the privilege of meeting Chiba Sensei during a seminar at Valley Aikido in Northampton, MA while I was at UMass/Amherst in '92. Valley Aikido was founded by Paul Sylvain Sensei...who was a special apprentice to Chiba until Sylvain Senei passed away in 1996. Learning from those 2 great men was an honor. czcams.com/video/ZJtlZYMYTqI/video.html
How did that happen wasn't it calibrated. Or updated?
Everything was calibrated, and it was running the latest firmware. That started a several month-long and still unsolved saga with DJI. They refused to replace the Mavic under the Refresh insurance I'd purchased, stating that I'd have to send the crashed Mavic back. When given access to the video of the crash, the logs of the flight, Google maps images of the crash area, they agreed it would be too dangerous for me to attempt a recovery and told me NOT to recover the drone. In the same breath, they told me that since I would not be recovering the aircraft, they would not replace it under their Refresh insurance! They gave me a 40% off coupon to purchase a new Mavic, which I did. The replacement drifted to the right by as much as 100 yards for every 300 yards of forward flight. I demanded a replacement, and was sent a refurbished unit (with who knows how many hours' flight time and crashes) in exchange for my brand new Mavic! I sent that back and was sent another new Mavic, which had the same severe drifting issues. All in all, I went through 5 replacements, during which time I was repeatedly lied to by DJI (told the replacement was flight tested; promised flight footage; promised test flight logs; promised new replacements not refurbished etc), sent refurbished units, and even my original malfunctioning replacement unit (a mistake, they said), before they simply claimed that "everything was working within specs" and that was the end of it! I still have a Mavic Pro that has about 3 hours of flight time on it since 2017, because it won't fly in a straight line (all other equipment has been tested, calibrated and found to be working correctly). After posting on the DJI forums, dozens of people reported the same issues, after which DJI tried to hide the forum posts! According to DJI, if your Mavic Pro flies in a straight line when commanded to do so, it is not working properly... Because when it drifts badly off to the right, THAT is "working properly" and "within specifications", according to DJI! I have other DJI equipment which is also faulty and which DJI will not fix. I have sworn never to buy DJI equipment ever again. It looks like the US government may well ban the import and sale of DJI drones in the near future anyway!
@@JulianFrostAikido not good mate you have had a really bad run with the whole scenario. Sorry to hear about that, so then some updates have bugs and issues when it was probably fine prior to updating. It's not a good thought when it comes to updating in the future. I call bull shit dji part about drifting off and not going straight when commanded to. It's like the drifting goes into atti mode
impressive teaching skills....where's your English accent gone? lol
Sorry Dean... it left me years ago! After just 2 years here, my mum complained, "I knew this would happen... You're so American!" LOL
The cat is the most attentive student.
She always is!
If you have another zoom, wonder if I could join.
Jan T Krokowski reply to this message with your email (it won't be public) and I'll send you a zoom invite for the next one.
Got your email... will send you an invite on the next one. It's usually on Tuesdays, at 7pm US Pacific time zone.
Like it. Thank you
Thank you too!
I appreciate your deep knowledge of Chiba Sensei's weapons. Great class.
Thank you Jan.
Thank you for this Julian!
I like the way you extend the tip.
Lovely class; great teacher.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Anybody know who are the Uke?
Yahe Solomon and Bruce Bookman, mostly. I can't remember the name of the uke with the beard.
I think Bruce Bookman was one
Is the bearded guy Nikos? Does anyone remember the story "Nikos, yokomen" No! Your comment!
I was lucky enough to train in his summer schools in the 🇬🇧 and spend a week training and sleeping on the mat in San Diego an amazing martial artist
Thank you very much for sharing this video. It helps the practice a lot. I wish I could see Chiba sensei, Shibata sensei or some highly skilled person executing the 12 + 12 jo techniques on Tsuki and Shomenuchi. 0:30 1. Kesa uchi (1st variation) 0:55 2. Sorry for the delay in replying. The 12 Jyo Basics video is available from Birankai. You'll see Archie Champion and George Lyons as uke for Chiba sensei as he demonstrates all 36 basics (plus variations).
Do you have the transcriptions?
I do not, but it's not so hard to hear what he is saying: Three variations, Jodan, Chudan, Gedan. Chudan is the basic. Concentrate on irimi. Hand motion is not straight down and back, but a spiral. Pull the collar, with the elbow down. There are 4 stages of iriminage. You have to integrate the basics into the variations. Penetrate through uke (by stepping through) to throw. Next stage, you don't have to step through uke (because you bring uke around you) as long as you bring uke against your shoulder. First spiral movement is downwards, then upwards. Four stages from Aihanmi Chudan: #1 - Irimi (Basic/Kihon); #2 - Irimi Tenkan; #3 - Irimi Tenkan (brining uke around your front leg); #4 - Irimi Tenkan (bringing uke around your front leg, then stepping around uke).
Bill was v close to my instructor Brian Burrows as his teacher, so I was taught by him on more than one occasion, great man, great technique....the Chiba years and the birth of Aikido in the UK!
What did Chiba think of Seagal?
Depends on who was asking him the question! Chiba sensei was Japanese, and therefore very polite when talking about other people.
watching him is one thing. experiencing him in person, his technique was mind blowing.
Indeed.
Koboyashi sensei is calling this first kata without variations boken kata 6, an ending kata of some other serie. It is telling me this kata is ‘very’ old and a strong foundation to learn and understanding martial arts for thousands of years. It give me the strength to learn more and more. Great demonstration from these masters !!!
The first half of this video is Ki Musubi No Tachi, with several variations. Ki Musubi No Tachi is often considered the 6th Kumi Tachi, though it is not actually part of the Kumi Tachi.
@@JulianFrostAikido Thanks for your reply. A next step to understand something.
I was fortunate enough to attend a seminar in Boston years ago with Sensei Chiba Kani and Yamada and it was knowledgeable and insightful and I carry those lessons to this day
This is Real aikido
Chiba sensei was not one who enjoyed what most Aikido has become in recent yeas.
Thanks for this. Our Sensei here in Bermuda spent some time at San Diego, Chiba had been to us 3 or 4 times. Most terrifying, yet amazing spirit to ever be in a room with. One afternoon we all went fishing after taking a morning beating and he and Mrs Chiba made us fresh sushi for dinner.
The intensity in his own dojo was always an order of magnitude above what it was like when he was visiting another dojo, or teaching a seminar, as he was dealing with his own students and he expected more of them. Imagine being in that environment every. single. day.
Köszönöm. Thank you! Unique!
Thanks. I'd only been Chiba sensei's uchi deshi about 6 months at the time the video was recorded. I returned to England with him for that seminar, then returned to San Diego. Still there, though he has left us. We feel his presence in the dojo, always.
Thank you for publishing this video. A great man. He gave us all so much. It was a honor to have been his student.
I was so fortunate to be one of his students for a while. Chiba Sensei was super powerful but I am very grateful for what a stickler he was on getting the fundamentals down.
As one of his uchi deshi and kenshusei, I agree that he was a stickler about the basics (kihon). His weapons basics are directly related to body arts so there was (is) a positive reinforcement of body arts basics whenever you do weapons - and vice versa.
U HAD 2B on the end of one of SHIHANS techniques 2 realise the POWER HE GENERATED !!
I believe this video contains the absolute essence of Chiba sensei's aikido. Watch his body positioning and how he moves to uke's blind spot. Watch how he bends his knees and gets under uke's center. He throws by taking uke's center with his (Chiba's) body. The movement of his arms, while powerful in and of itself, is secondary to his hip rotation. His timing is impeccable... he cuts uke down and adds his own force to that of uke as uke scrambles to regain his balance. There is so much to see in this video, if the viewer has the eyes to see it.
Last time I spoke with Mr Smith he had just turned seventy, a gentleman to say the least . I never studied under him as I was Ryu Shin Kan Kanetsuka , however it was good to converse with him and learn of his success and happiness .
This is awesome to see. We still practise it this way today with our teacher who spent some time out in San Diego in those days!
I still laugh when I watch this video. So many mistakes. 32 years later, I hope I'm making fewer mistakes.
Agree. People who criticise Aikido have no clue to old school aikido.
This is real old school. Very interesting material for study
It's alive and well in many Birankai dojo around the world.
Hello Julian, I'm the uke on this video. I am making a short free documentary for my CZcams channel. Is it fine if I use a few seconds of this video, regarding you intellectual property ? Kind regards, Mickaël
Juba nour I'm trying to get hold of you look at your facebook
Brilliant. Thanks for sharing Julian. I still remember the smell of that mat.
amazing
In my opinion, this video contains the true essence of Chiba sensei's aikido.
This is beyond awesome. The variations are simply amazing. Thanks for posting Julian. These are two of the scariest instructors I've ever had the fortune of taking ukemi for. :)
Chiba and Shibata were at the top of their game in this video!
excellente démonstration de iriminage
I think that videos like this help to provide an insight into what's missing in a lot of modern Aikido. So much of what we see now is pretty but ultimately empty. Chiba Sensei maintained focus on Budo and power!
Absolutely. As I've said in other comments, I believe this video demonstrates the true essence of Chiba sensei's aikido. Everything is in this video, if we have the eyes to see it.
