The Association of Physicians of Pakistani-Descent of North America (APPNA) strongly condemns the statement of Pakistan Minister for Defense, Mr. Khawaja Mohammad Asif in the National Assembly on June 14, 2023, wherein he used most condescending and degraded language for Pakistani diaspora in the USA and Canada. The words of Mr. Asif were glaringly contemptuous of Pakistanis in North America and Europe. Derogatory comments about more than three million overseas Pakistanis by a sitting minister of the Pakistan government holding a very important portfolio of Defense, is unfortunate and unacceptable. Pakistani diaspora living in the Western world in general, and North America in particular, has forever nothing but the welfare of Pakistan on its mind. Its services to Pakistan are far too numerous to count. The services of overseas Pakistanis, regardless of whether they carry a single or dual nationality, have always brought a good name to Pakistan. They and their next generations are the true ambassadors of Pakistan in the world, and they have a proud track record to prove it. Mr. Asif may have his political differences with some overseas Pakistanis, but that does not give him any right to disparage the whole community. Even responding to political opponents should be with political arguments and not with hateful rhetoric. APPNA is an apolitical organization and does not indulge in politics. However, it respects the right of its membership and other overseas Pakistanis who, within the confines of law, may choose to comment on, or participate in political activities either in their individual capacities or through some political platforms. Their sympathies may lie with different political parties, but no one can be allowed to try to disparage them the way Mr. Asif did. At the same time, APPNA exhorts overseas Pakistanis and everyone else, to be civil and tolerant in their political discourse. Mr. Asif’s comments, as a sitting minister, particularly his perverted views that overseas Pakistanis from North America, or Europe, visit Pakistan only to bury their elders or sell property are most insulting and in extremely poor taste. This can never be accepted. We hope these remarks do not reflect the stance of the government. We also feel sorry for some members of the National Assembly who encouraged Mr. Asif’s vile outburst with desk thumping. We are surprised that not one member showed the moral courage to correct him. In our opinion, the Honorable Speaker should have taken notice and expunged these hateful words from the record of the proceedings. APPNA advises Mr. Asif to read the Islamabad High Court judgement in the “Malik Munsif Awan vs Federation of Pakistan” case of 2020. Authored by the then Chief Justice Islamabad High Court (now a sitting judge of the Supreme Court), Mr. Athar Minallah, the judgment rightly affirmed that “(The) patriotism of a person who is a citizen of Pakistan cannot be doubted or suspected unless the state can demonstrably and without a shadow of doubt establish otherwise”. It asserted that “A person who holds dual nationality is indeed a citizen of Pakistan and thus his or her commitment to Pakistan or Patriotism can never be doubted”. Mr. Asif, Minister of Defense, Government of Pakistan, sought to create doubts about the commitment of overseas Pakistanis to Pakistan. His remarks and choice of words, in the Parliament of Pakistan of all places, were most unfortunate and unbecoming of a minister or member of parliament. APPNA appeals to the Honorable Prime Minister, Mian Mohmmad Shahbaz Sharif, to take notice of the remarks of Mr. Khawaja Mohammad Asif. We ask that Mr. Asif retract his remarks and make an apology to the millions of Pakistanis residing in North America and Europe.
