Nice work Mr. Bunning! Very Helpful.
Glad it was helpful - let me know how these ACS checkrides go from your side of things - bit of a learning curve for all for a while!
Mate, thank you so much for producing these videos! They are so beneficial. Side note: Do you work with LE because I did a small bit with them back in 2021 but I don't think I ever met you.
Yes I do - I used to instruct there about 10 years ago, came back to help manage the school probably just after you in 2021. Come swing by if you still live nearby!
R44 near max gross hovers around 24 inches, how is 24 inches bad?
Great question! This is an R22, and at an elevation near 4000', about 20C = max continuous power limit of about 22" MAP. So in that aircraft, in those conditions, 24" would indicate a problem.
@@HelicopterTrainingVideos just because a helicopter is using more than max continuous power to hover doesn't make it automatically bad. Yes I get that you're saying R22, but could the same be said for an R44 if hovering with 24 inches is bad?
Bottom line - know what is expected power for the current load/conditions/aircraft, if it is above that, you need to think why. Hover power check will help keep you safe.
ALSO - forgot to add to the video: AOO VII, Task B. Navigation Systems and Radar Services, S7 now requires you to maintain the selected altitude, ±200 feet and headings, ±15° while using an airborne electronic navigation system.

Legend!
You are welcome!
Thank you for this video
You bet! I hope it helps, more details to come in future videos (released a new one today).
Thanks for the effort!
Thank you. It is an ongoing project - new video on the Private Pilot ACS today.
Stupid place to put fuel cut off switch where it could accidentally be turned off. Surely the At could be re located.
Has to be a balance between accessible in an emergency and not too easy to accidently pull - apparently that is the place.
Awesome video! Never flown in a helicopter, I always assumed you'd increase power to create more RPM's, thus allowing the helicopter more lift. I see now that you're not really increasing RPM, you're just adding more power to compensate for the increase in lift created by changing the pitch of the blades. The more you know!
Yeah you got it! Thanks Hey go do a demo flight at a local school - can say you flew a helicopter and maybe you will get the bug...
Thanks for all your hard work on this! Looking forward to watching the deep dive videos.
Thank you so much - working on it right now, expect PVT pilot multi-part series to come out in about a week.
This video is so useful as i am a modern babft player Although people build boats The pro player community Refuses to build boats including me. I also like helicopters
LOL Ok
I've recently decided that I want to become a commercial helicopter pilot. This video was very helpful, thank you.
Excellent! Where are you going to train?
@HelicopterTrainingVideos I'm not sure yet but as close to Southampton as possible. I work as a docker. I drive the straddle carriers that transport containers around the terminal. The problem I have is, I work any 5 from 7 and don't know if I have the following day off until the day before. I'm looking for somewhere I can book a lesson as soon as I find out I'm off work the next day.
This is amazing, thank you for the breaking this all down so well! 🙌
Absolutely! Hope to have the details on each ACS soon.
neat
Thanks
Why is aft cyclic recommended during low rotor rpm events? Doesn't this load the rotor even more, because the wind is now coming from below the rotor disk and tries to "brake" the rotor? So it tries to "windmill", which would be the opposite direction of the rotor direction when driven by the engine. Can someone explain? EDIT: Or does the rotor blade pitch goes negative when you lower the collective and therefore the relative wing from below the rotor disk speeds up the rotor? But that would mean, that the rotor RPM would decrease when the helicopter is flared heavily at positive pitch/collective input.
Great question - I believe it will cause G-loading (feel heavier in your seat) which will cause coning, which will increase RPM due to the center of mass moving inward slightly (think ice skater with arms moved in while spinning) but also I think it probably has to do with changes in airflow as you mentioned.
is this awareness training also required when taking a discovery flight with an instructor in the left seat?
Great question! YES - anyone who manipulated flight controls of R22 or R44 must have had SFAR 73 Awareness Training and receive an endorsement saying so.
Been watching through this entire series and this has been my favourite video yet. Student clearly having a challenging day but honestly probably his best day flying yet. Great work from both pilots 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the feedback.
I added ,my info content 👌 czcams.com/video/UHxUXwWv21A/video.htmlsi=Orc0SVhkbubwF4ES, thanks for your info from R22.! 👍
my 430 won’t remove the hold like this. any other suggestions? this is even after selecting no when it asks if i want to do the hold while loading the approach.
I would have to see it I think. What approach is it? Have you tried different approaches? And is your G430 fully up to date?
Good information, can you make a video on how to use MAP chart
Yes that is a good idea - I am currently busy on the new Helicopter ACS, but I can add MAP chart to my to-do list. Thanks for the suggestion.
I now trust this man with my life . I had my doubts . I was wrong . 🙏🏽💪🏾✌🏽
LOL thanks!
We have retards flying above us ! Scary 💀👀👀
The instructor is great . I would be 💀
Thank you so much!
You suck dude
This video maybe 10 yrs old but it is good as GOLD.....makes me really want to fly helicopters 😊
Thank you so much! Go try a demo flight!
I always thought that with helicopters you can go straight up. Why the approaches?
Great question! We can if we have enough power available (it requires a lot of power) but it also puts us the 'bad' area of the H/V curve, which we try to avoid as much as possible to reduce risk (look here for more info www.helicoptertrainingvideos.com/2021/03/how-height-velocity-diagram-determined/)
Have an exam on a helicopter's flight dynamics in just under a month so I thought it would be very useful to see a vid of the swashplate, or "piatto oscillante" as we say in Italy. Great video
Glad it was helpful! How did the exam go?
Hello..love this videos, its awesome to have this content available...i have a question on minute 19...lowering collective brings rotor rpm down? Is this only true when governor is off? I thought less drag meant higher rotor rpm...(aspiring helicopter pilot here) i hope my future instructor is as good of a teacher as the one in this videos
Great question. There is mechanical linkage called the correlator. As the collective is lowered it closes the throttle and as the collective is raised it opens the throttle. It does that to assist the pilot to maintain correct RPM when governor is off. It works pretty well, but at the high and low ends of collective movement it will not do so well. So if you keep lowering collective below about 15" manifold pressure, it will start to brin the RPMs down.
Just wanted to drop a note to say what a fantastic resource you have created! Your passion for not just helicopters but also for instruction really shines through the entire series. You are a fantastic teacher. I've just finished watching the entire series - I started watching before my first trial flight which really helped give additional context to that first flight, and I'm now at 15 hours and counting working towards my PPL in the UK. My instructor was impressed with my first auto because I was looking mainly outside and using my ears for the RPMs, and that was because all I could hear in my head was you guys... "RPMs, Airspeed, Outside" :) My instructor also recommended your videos, and I told him I'd already been binge watching! Happy flying man, and thanks for all the hard work that went into creating this awesome video series. Hope to fly around the Bend area some time, looks like a fantastic place to fly.
That is great to hear! Where are you learning to fly in the UK and how is it going? Hit me up when you get to Bend!
@@HelicopterTrainingVideos I'm training at Elstree Aerodrome with Ice Helicopters. It's going great, really enjoying the whole process. About to do my qualifying solo cross country. My instructors think my skills test should be either next month or June. Fingers crossed! I will definitely hit you up if I get out to Bend :)
I always thought helicopters can go straight up or down?
Great question! They can but it requires a lot of power and is not always the safest way to depart/arrive.
So i know the lower graph shows you where the cg of the helicopter is. But what exactly is the upper graph showing? Or is it just telling us if the helicopter is within weight limits?
Good question! The the 'graph' shows CG when viewed from above, the upper shows CG when viewed from the side (forward and aft) as well as the total weight. It must remain in that 'envelope'. Does that make sense?
Is there a metric system version of this? If so, why is it orders of magnitude easier to use ffs?
Yes there is - in the R22 Pilot Operating Handbook (POH) the weight and balance numbers on the right side of the CG limits chart are in metric: shop.robinsonheli.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/r22_poh_2.pdf
" BEND ! " lol - nice job and thanks for the videos!
You are welcome! Are you in Bend?
this kid seems like a spoiled whiny brat
Thank you, explanations were clearly understandable and video showing the actual swashplate in motion by the cyclic and collective made for a superb video and thorough understanding of this part.
Thank you - glad it helped.
Why would anyone ever "go around" in a helicopter when you can just stop to hover and retry from that point?
Great question! Sometimes it is just not safe or practical to come to a high hover.
Tj4092 @134@134
thank you for the video !
You are welcome!
Nice videos! We get weak splits on a warm heli. As mentioned, its the fact that it splits that is important.
Thank you
Right base vs. final…….important call
Agreed
You mention Standard Empty Weight on your webpage but you don’t define it on the video.
Ah thanks - as it comes from factory without optional extras = standard
Thanks for the video
You bet
Excelente
Thank you!
what you are talking about is a trivial GNSS waypoint and not a virtual VOR based on VOR radial /DME distance
Agreed - it is a virtual VOR in the way it can work like a VOR, rather than a DME/DME virtual VOR
Day one... uh huh. I am the king of Egypt. This is either day 2 or 3, and/or this kid has a ton of simulator time. (Yes, this is a compliment)
He flew a few hours in a Switzer - he was truly naturally talented.
Do most instructors talk this fast!?! How can one honestly learn w anyone talking this fast n unclear???
LOL, have you heard someone from the New York area?? Thankfully you can rewind...
