WingCast Ep. 23: Emilio Scotto - The Longest Motorcycle Ride
Check out all things Emilo at: emilioscotto.com or czcams.com/channels/1o31yy1YKlwxIyyEMtQ9dw.html
Welcome to WingCast, a podcast about all things Gold Wing and more!
We have a thing for the Gold Wing. Do you? Join WingStuff President, Rick Arnoldo, as he interviews fellow riders and experts in the motorcycle industry and talks about the latest Gold Wing news. Whether you are new to Gold Wings or have ridden them for years and years, WingCast is the perfect podcast for you!
In this episode, Rick speaks with Emilio Scotto. They discuss how he ended up doing the world's longest motorcycle trip on his 1980 Goldwing GL1100 named "Black Princess". He has held the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest motorcycle ride since 1997! Emilio is also an adventurer, writer of multiple books and speaker when he's not busy taking people around the world on one of his famous motorcycle tours. They also discuss a host of other topics. Hope you enjoy this chat!
After his talk with Emilio, Rick calls his Uncle for another segment of, AYYY! with Uncle Frank, where Rick surprise calls his 90-something year old Italian Uncle just to see what he's up to at the moment. Uncle Frank is a very important person in Rick's life, as he was responsible for getting Rick his very first motorcycle when he was a kid. He's always a good time and will have you laughing by the end for sure. We hope you enjoy this episode.
Thanks for listening. Until next time...Ride Safe!

In 1985, Emilio Scotto - Argentinian motorcyclist, photojournalist and writer - quit his job working for Pfizer and embarked on an epic adventure most of us only dream of. Reminiscent of a Tolkien novel, his expedition took him to 280+ countries, covering 500,000+ miles (800,000+ km). Imagine the maintenance required for such an undertaking! How many gallons of oil? Or how many tires? Or batteries? Or seats?
300+ gallons of oil. 86 tires. 12 batteries. 9 seats.
Not to mention one replaced engine and 12,500 gallons of gas consumed.
And 10 years of riding! That's right, a 10 year road trip!
His trek started quietly enough. He didn't make it a whole thing. He simply got on his Wing and left. Well, there was plenty of planning beforehand, I'm sure, but he didn't take out an ad in the paper or call his local news station. His GL1100, affectionately dubbed "Black Princess," carried him from his home country through much of South America, North America, Africa, Asia and beyond.
As he continued his adventure, his notoriety grew and he received donations or sponsorships from friends, unknown benefactors, corporations and dictators alike. He met with the Pope at the Vatican and even met his eventual wife along the way.
But it wasn't all sunshine and smiles. He rode through Nicaragua during its civil war in 1985. He was arrested multiple times in Africa as a suspected spy and once because they thought his passport was a fake. He even had to hide in a diplomatic compound in one country until he could find safe passage. Along the way, Scotto was robbed, shot at, and caught in the middle of an earthquake, 2 tornados and 4 hurricanes.
(Checks notes..."Yep, 7 natural disasters...hard to believe but okay. Terribly bad luck I guess.").
And he nearly died of Malaria.
In the end, however, he took his childhood dream and made it his reality. What began as a nine-year-old declaring, "Tomorrow, I'll go around the world," developed into a young man discovering an alluring motorcycle and taking its motto to heart: "The world is yours, on two wheels." If only we could be so lucky!

    Main design flaw of this unit is the on/off levers are hard to get to and activate once the bike is on the stand. Since the wheels move 360 degrees, the levers are not always easily accessible. And u have to use your foot, not hands, to push on/off levers. (My levers do not move so easy with fingers like on this video). I wish there was an update or better design for the levers.

      No problem at all! 10W30 Full Synthetic is fine to use in general, however we recommend you double check with Honda's requirements before using. Some oils may include additives which should be avoided, but we don't know enough about that particular brand of oil to say one way or the other. We highly recommend using Honda brand 10W30 Full Synthetic oil (and so do many of our customers!). I now there is a microswitch at the handle which gives the handle bar the display which disable all gear types if selection. I have'nt opened up the cover where the switch sit but interlocking wiring will be done when get there, this is a basic mod and not rocket science. I will surely update you with the outcome.

I went back to my guy and he installed the Centramatic System... I noticed that I picked up a low speed wobble around 41 to 49 mph... Should he have removed the beads ??? Thanks for the work you do for us riders !!!

    • @WingStuffcom
      @WingStuffcom Před 2 měsíci

      Hey Peter, yes with the Centramatics installed there is no longer any need for the beads. They aren't necessarily the reason for the wobble you're describing, but the optimal setup is to only have the Centramatics on your tires and nothing else as they do all the work that's needed. I hope this helps!

      Hello, Centramatic used to make their product for the GL1500 in the past but no longer do, unfortunately. As far as tires, have you used the Dunlop Elite 4 tires for the GL1500? We've had some great feedback from customers about them. Alternatively, we also carry the Metzeler 888 Marathon Tires. You can check them out here: wingstuff.com/catalog?AllOffset=0&Offset=0&Per_Page=15&Sort_By=bestsellers&category=1927-Tires+%26+Accessories&category=1928-Street+Tires&shop_your_bike=06_GL1500&shop_your_bike=2000

      @@WingStuffcom what is the model number for the CENTRAMATIC Wheel Balancers that were being made for the GL1500's before they stopped caring about the bike I ride? i will try to find some from someone that no longer needs them.

    Just bought some stuff for my 2024 GW a few weeks ago from this guys. The website is very complete, yet still easy to navigate. You can simply input the model and year of your bike and whenever you are trying to buy anything from the store, it will say if the item fits for your bike or not! That’s really important, specially when you are shipping outside the US, which is my case because if you order something wrong, it’s a pain in the a** to return it. Overall, I was really satisfied with the entire experience at Wingstuff. Good job! J Horst

    I always turn my Goldwing DCT off with the Killswitch first, then the dial.

    The seat just came out a few months ago and you already can't buy it anymore it's discontinued

    Thanks for posting. I ordered one for my VFR1200F and it works fantastic. The very little trouble that I have using the dolly is dismounting the bike (almost no trouble). The brakes on the casters are ok but I find that it helps to wedge an HF tire iron under the dolly to keep it from moving when dismounting the bike off the center stand.

    It that difficult to install the system?! How long it's take?🙏🏻

      It takes a little over an hour to install the Amp kit only. If installing the ROKKER speakers as well it's a bit more involved and time consuming. To get a better idea, you can check out the installation instructions here: wingstuff.com/product/rokker-xxrp-1000w-4-ch-amp-kit-for-2018-gold-wing

    Again. You make the best instructional videos I've seen for the 2018+ goldwing. I own a 2022 tour model, and other than replacing the windshield with a Puig, I'm just now considering upgrades. I'm sure these videos will save me a great deal of time. Cheers 🇨🇦

      @Bags2723 I had installed a Puig windshield as well and came back recently from a trip to (almost) the east coast & back to the midwest. I like the extra width and all, but I wish it wasn't quite so tall, the lowest position can't be use as it distorts the view at my sitting height as you're looking thru the very top of it back and forth over and thru the shield. I may just look into a stock height but wider width shield if it gets too annoying, haha!

    • @Bags2723
      @Bags2723 Před 2 měsíci

      I agree that the height with the Puig is too much for some, but if you're around the 6ft mark, it's perfect. Cheers.

    Thanks for the video! I am about to put that newly found knowledge to work... I was surprised to see the rear centramatics go against the rotor, Doesn't that make the rear wheel offset with the front wheel? I understand that the centramatic is not super thick but still... thanks!
