    Just ordered this book this morning; should arrive next week. I ordered it on the recommendation of Todd Friel on a recent Wretched Radio episode (czcams.com/video/zNQzFj-2X-Q/video.html&ab_channel=Wretched). In that episode, he played several clips of Vincent preaching about how focusing on justification is the key to sanctification. The point, driven harder by Friel than by Vincent, I think, is that, even when we are sinning, God is still enthusiastically loving us with the same heart he had toward us at the moment of our justification--and that really comping to grasp this is the key to our sanctification. I am currently on a quest to learn just how true this is, biblically. There is part of me that would love to believe it. To stop beating myself up over my sin and just learn to relax in God's unchanging love DOES seem, not only wonderful, but like it might have the power to transform in a big way. But I cannot believe it just because it is beautiful, or because it is an idea well-presented by good Christian teachers. It must be biblical. And I am not certain it is. There is quite a bit of Scripture which portrays God as being exactly what these guys say He isn't--namely, irritated at His people for their capacity to sin and sin and sin and sin again. And as off-putting as this may be to some--including part of me--I also find it beautiful. When read the broken heart of God in Hosea expressed as a jealous, angry, jilted Lover, I am attracted to Him. In those moments, I do not necessarily want Him to be so positive toward me as these guys tell me He is. I want a God who will get angry at me over my sin. At least part of me does... like a kid who wants a dad who actually cares enough to get mad and punish him for his misbehavior. On the other hand, I also know the crippling, joy-killing, sin-breeding darkness that comes from feeling the frown of God on me all the time. So I am attracted to both ideas, and i am repulsed by both ideas. I find both biblical and find both challenged by Scripture. (Note, e.g., how Hebrews 12:18-24 tells us that we have not come to a scary Mount Sinai but to wonderful Mount Zion, but then goes on to warn us in verses 25-29 not to take this for granted, because "our God is a consuming fire.") Hence the quest to iron it out. Do you think Vincent's book will help me in this pursuit?

      @BrettRicley Před 3 lety

      KC, yes, I think Vincent's book will help you. Your pursuit is a worthy one - one that doesn't have an "easy answer". I believe this issue is like a coin - it has two sides. On one side you have the justification by grace alone (Eph. 2:1-9) through faith alone in Christ alone (Romans 5). Jesus' sacrificial and atoning death on the cross paid the sin debt for all believers (1 John 2:2). Therefore, in terms of God's anger, wrath, disappointment, etc "it's finished" (John 19:30) and God no longer has these emotions towards His elect. However, on the other side of the coin, there is the daily reality that believers still battle their sin and while God certainly doesn't overlook our sin, His anger and punishment for that sin has already been dealt with in the death and resurrection of Christ (Sins are forgiven - past, present, and future). Therefore, the faithful believer will seek to NOT grieve the Holy Spirit by sinning (Eph. 4:30), will seek to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel, confess and repent of sin daily (1 John 1:9), and seek to grow in godliness (2 Peter 1:3-11). It's the tension that Martin Luther referred to as being simultaneously a "sinner" (Romans 3:23, 5:8, 6:23) and "justified" (Romans 5:18) at the exact same time.

      @@BrettRicley Thanks, Brett. I appreciate your use of Scripture. I understand and agree, of course, with what you've said here. And yet the simul iustus et peccatur struggle remains. After a while, the question morphs into one of how the interplay of joy and sorrow (as linked to holiness and sin) are meant to work in the Christian life. Does a Christian progress from Romans 6 to 7, and then 8, and then live there happily ever after? Or does he or she have to keep rehearsing the path over and over again? It doesn't seem that the apostles expect Christians to live always flagellating themselves for their sins and failures, but to live joyfully. On the other hand, there is no question that there is such a thing as taking sin and grace too lightly. Just this morning, I was in a men's study which was looking at Ephesians 5. 'You are not to be like this,' says Paul, 'because God's wrath is coming upon people who are like that. Instead, be like this.' Heavy. Anyone who reads that and just goes blithely dancing off, just celebrating grace... I wonder what's going on in their minds? I see many Christians who seem to present themselves as joyful and living in the grace and forgiveness of God, but whom I strongly suspect are not really letting themselves be appropriately burdened by their ongoing sin and fleshliness. (Such diagnoses are difficult, of course, because I know I am not their judge and have no spiritual x-ray into their soul; I am just looking somewhat critically at them in an effort to understand what's going on and what, perhaps, I or they might be missing, etc.) I know that wearing a scratchy hair shirt is not the answer (Col. 2:21-23). But there is an appropriate embrace of the negative (James 4:8-10). I suppose the proof is in the product, right? Does the guilt/sorrow/shame produce godliness, or does it just produce death (II Cor. 7:9-11)? Anyway, thank you. I will be reading the Vincent book prayerfully with the Lord, seeking Him on this question (and also to glean whatever else he might have for me in it). If He ever brings me to mind, maybe pray for me?
