Deputy Involved Shooting - May 22, 2023
SEBRING -- A deputy-involved shooting that took place earlier today. This information is preliminary, and may change as the investigation proceeds.
At approximately 1:15 p.m. today, Highlands County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at 6409 Concord Street in the Spring Lake area of Sebring to attempt to contact 63-year-old Bradley Frank Begens.
Begens had multiple active arrest warrants dating back to October 2022 and was a fugitive sex offender, who was previously convicted of attempted sexual battery on a child under 12 years of age.
When deputies arrived on scene, they saw Begens inside the home. At that point, they secured the perimeter of the home and called for back-up units.
A search warrant was obtained for the home. After the warrant was obtained, multiple attempts were made to contact anyone inside the home before deputies breached the front door at around 2:45 p.m. and made entry into the residence.
A search of the house revealed that the door to one of the bedrooms was closed and locked. Deputies once again made repeated attempts to have Begens surrender peacefully, including giving multiple K-9 warnings.
When deputies forced entry into the bedroom, they discovered Begens hiding in a closet. He refused to show his hands and surrender, at which time a K-9 was deployed.
As the K-9 made contact with Begens, he raised a handgun. At that point, which was approximately 2:52 p.m., deputies fired several rounds at Begens. Deputies initiated life saving measures however, Begens died at the scene of the shooting.
When deputies entered the closet they discovered 60-year-old Doreen Murphy Turner. She was not wounded in the shooting, but was taken into custody and will be charged with felony murder in the second degree and resisting arrest with violence.
No Highlands County Sheriff’s Office personnel, including the K-9, were injured during the incident. The deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The 10th Judicial Circuit Officer Involved Deadly Incident Task Force, which includes law enforcement officers from Polk, Highlands and Hardee counties, as well as the State’s Attorney Office, will conduct the investigation.

I heard when some inmates from Highlands County got transferred to Polk County Sheriffs Office Jail due to renovations at Highlands jail they were not happy with the food at all in Polk County lol

That is the same advice my parents gave me thirty years ago and I gave my son.
I did 90 days in Duval County jail back in the early 1990s. I got on the kitchen crew almost from day 1.(I was a line cook at a popular steak house). I used to load up the trays as much as I could get away with, cause I remember getting the trays that couldn't fill the stomach of a field mouse.

Humans need food, air, water, clean places, love, and medical care alongside education and training. We need stimulation to grow and rules with understanding. If you take this away from an inmate, you will have issues inside and out. We send them there to be reformed and not tortured, regardless of their crimes. In case you think I am too pro-inmate, a person touched my 8-year-old daughter, and I don't wish him a tortured life. He needs to be reformed to make him understand the rules apply to everyone. My daughter is in therapy and with my help, I don't classify her as a victim of S.A., but a survivor of an act not appropriate for her age. He is still a human being and mistakes are made. If a woman would help him out, he would not be so prone to do these sorts of things. We need understanding and not hate or hurt. Thank you all and love and respect each other, any other way is not worth it.

That is a funaminal straight for as the police officer said good food and a healthy portion avoids fights protests, and potential harm to county jail inmates and even correctional officers is a wonderful reality and overall responsible way of enacting a form of violence prevention the said thing is that the majority of all other county jails actually have incompetent nutritionist who are actually more interested in conspiring with jail and medical staff to cause their jail inmate population to remain hungry with for the most part terrible looking and tasting food, whereon said officials objective is to make their jail populations suffer from constant hunger with food with little to no nutritional value, that with a cost of about 10 to 30 dollars to feed each county jail inmate, verses the 180 in the above video for what appears to be 9utstandinf food.
