Country Music Festival Ad | Shot with Helios 44-2 | Sony FX3 | Canon FD 24mm
Back in April, I was graced with the opportunity to create an announcement video for the Lone Star Music Festival debuting in Dallas in 2025. The team wanted to replicate the feeling of an old-school western and I immediately knew this would be the perfect opportunity to use some vintage lenses that up until now, I've only ever used for my own personal work (see the London video on this channel!). With some planning, an amazing crew, and the perfect weather conditions, we managed to film this in 4 hours with really the bulk of our shots happening within that slim margin of golden hour.
I shot about 15% of this on the Canon FD, the 80% on the Helios 44-2 and the last final shot on the Sony 24-70mm as I needed auto-focus for that final car shot (no focus puller on this shoot).

Ok, ive been so unsure what camera to buy next, coming from ursa mini 4k and sony a7sii, love the colours on the blackmagic, and havent really got it right in the sony world when grading coming near blackmagic colour sience. I shoot now on the Helios 44-2 from the fabric in belarus, first 44-2 modell mmz, model h-202 Aaamaazing lense! And seeing this, how you actually nailed the colour sience on this, inspired me to go the fx3 way! THANK YOU Wilbert! Feels right now, choosing this over the bmpcc 6k fullframe!
I’m so glad this could be a helpful reference for you! This was all done with just s-log 3 and some work in DaVinci (no extra plugins!). I’m excited to see what you create out there!
does focus peaking or focus map work on those vintage lenses?
It does! Which really helps. It can still be tricky to nail focus, but it’s helpful!
