My birth mother is a musician. And my God, do I wish I was raised by her. I showed interest in music early, and was "allowed" to get music lessons. But when I really got my mind set on becoming a professional musician, my adoptive father really did his best to discourage it. He'd get these balding, bloated Italian guys from his tool and die shop to tell me how hard it was to make it as a musician. Of course, the market for Italian wedding band accordionists is limited. Not what I aspired to do. Thinking about it makes my blood boil. I think it's a bad idea to raise other people's children if you expect them to be a miniature you despite sharing no genetics.

I like the fact that Giddins discusses Thielemans at length, but I don’t necessarily agree with every one of his points. Unless someone were to actually ask Zoot Sims or Cannonball Adderley why they started playing soprano sax then I wouldn’t necessarily assume that it was primarily because of John Coltrane. Of course there were many sax players such as Dave Liebman, Steve Grossman and Wayne Shorter who undoubtedly were inspired to do so because of Trane. I also don’t agree that it’s difficult to quickly identify Toots as playing the theme from “Midnight Cowboy.” I’ve always thought that his distinctive plaintive tone shines through. Giddins mentions German jazz harmonica player Hendrik Meurkins. Years ago I wrote a review of one of his CDs. I thought it was top notch and that he avoided the usual comparisons to Toots. Giddins is right about the Bill Evans “Affinity” album. It’s a very nice record. One last comment: Giddins, as far as I can tell, neglected to mention an important word, which is chromatic. As everyone knows that’s the kind of instrument that harmonica players like Toots and Adler played.

Sampling also plays a big role in preserving music. Think about the millions of hours of great music that is just sitting in obscurity because everybody is too afraid to do anything with it. Even if the artist is dead, and the songs have had like 10 listeners in the past 25 years, you can still get sued by whoever 'owns' the rights because through some kind of magical force you are infringing on their, non-existent, business if you use a 1 second snippet of the song. It is somehow better if that song stays in absolute obscurity forever.

I know exactly what he means. I stopped playing acoustic three years after I graduated HS. About 10 years ago, I decided I wanted to play it again ... and I totally suck at it. Just not enough hours on the instrument to be really good. I regret my choice back then, but here we are.

Who knew doing this thing called music could be a vehicle for expression that could take one around the world. It is possible yet it takes dedication. Even when it seems no one is listening. Some are fortunate to have this opportunity. Others have to dig deep inside themselves when all others seem comfortable in their doubt as to ones ability to rise above adversity. I love Aaron in this setting. When I first met him in person during the celebration of the music of Ahmad Jamal it was in Dizzies Club in New York aka ‘the City’. I walked up to him and complimented him on his sound and he was always very kind and courteous. many can take a page out of Aaron’s book on how to carry one’s self. It does not matter what on e can play if one’s character is not a reflection of the deeper existence of one’s being. Beautiful to watch Hank Jones give such live-changing gems of wisdom with love and compassion. Such an amazing human in Hank Jones and the family of Jones talents out of Pontiac, Michigan. Give thanks.
