Improving Patient Experience across UCLH Cancer Collaborative - Planning Event
I had a hysteroscopy yesterday and it was one of the most painful things I've ever had to deal with in my life. I am traumatised. It left me feeling shaky, faint and extremely anxious. The procedure had to be stopped! I am now waiting for an appointment for this to be done under GA! Why wasn't this option or other options offered to me in the first place?
This video is awful. This procedure should be done minimally with a local anesthetic, and spinal block or GA, these should be offered also to women who have experienced pain with procedures or pelvic exams in the past. They all minimize pain, mostly the two physicians. Instead of telling they try to make a woman less anxious, by talking to her about Christmas, they should focus on how the proper type of anesthesia could be explained and not minimize what the pain could be... It is a shame this is put on line by the NHS, paid with our taxes.
What are the risks? or any side effects after?
My husband is at the beginning of treatment. This video has given me an insight ,of what is to come, and put my mind,at rest .
I would want to be asleep
Only a man could say a hysteroscopy is a painless procedure!! I had one without any anaesthetic, as this was not offered to me. It was like medieval torture and I went into a shocked catatonic state for half an hr afterwards. I have had a further 2 under general anaesthetic and yes then it is painless. Apart from the period like pains afterwards. I have one today in fact and am up and about pain free already.
Can anyone explain the whole process with the GA ,never had it done before and im not really keen on it but def worried the anesthetic in the womb wont be enough or it will painful.
Talking about Christmas fgs!!! It feels like they're shoving a flaming Christmas tree up your fufu!!!! I thought I was a big softie until I read up on this barbaric procedure.. Shame on you!
I just had this procedure done on 5/7 along with removing an old IUD to replace it with a new one. As someone with PCOS, it bothers me when they say “there’s some discomfort”. Umm, some discomfort? Anything done vaginally is uncomfortable and painful. Even in post op. In my case, I was down for a week and my post op bleeding was a lot the first few days but then lightened, then stopped. I felt crappy that entire week but I’m glad it’s behind me now.
Doctors like this man should be ashamed of spreading blatant lies!!!!! Informed consent means knowing how much pain could occur during the procedure. Notice how he stated that he would explain the procedure AFTER you have signed the consent form. That speaks volumes. Women need to ask more questions and STOP expecting doctors to tell you the truth. Be your own advocate and INSIST procedures only be done if adequate analgesia is guaranteed.
Thank you for the very good video ,it has helped me a lot
Had my fourth carried out today and all the last three were carried out under GA due to the extreme pain felt on the first one. I could’ve passed out with the pain and no one explained to me the pain that would be felt . Lying here just now 10 hours after waking from GA and still having cramp pains but I can tolerate that . I cannot recommend highly enough to anyone watching this to ask for a GA no matter your pain threshold as this is the most painful procedure I have ever experienced. As a mother who had delivered twins naturally I found the hysteroscopy, biopsy and mirena coil insertion more painful a procedure than giving birth.
Ive had 3 done and gone under for all of them
I did my sample on a weekend and my GP surgery contacted me and said the lab were unable to process my results and they’ve asked me to do another test. I think the stool “expired” so to speak 💩💩😅😅
I had surgery first and they couldn’t get it all. So I got 38 radiation treatments 4.7 KREM PLUS Lupron. That cured it but came down with Myasthenia Gravis 6 Mo later. Better that than dying in agony with bone cancer!
I was more anxious about the catheter than I was about the surgery. This video has helped cope with those worries and also reassured me about the pre op planning, surgical procedure and after care. The information about care and our own responsibilities was excellent. Thanks to all involved in this.
Thank you for information and I learned to much 💯✅🥰
Don't let any doctor tell you there will be some discomfort! The nurse said she heard me scream down the hall. It hurts like hell!!!!!!!! And mine was done by a female doctor. She never offered to stop or provide pain medication. This is so wrong not to tell a patient the truth! My second hysteroscopy was done under anesthesia.
The most painful experience of my life, never again and without anasthetic, a little uncomfortable, understatement of the century.
I had gas & air, which helped a lot. Insist on some pain relief, particularly gas & air - Entonox, which really helps you cope. GA is not suitable for everyone. Not everyone can cope with this without pain relief and there is also the issue of STENOSIS, whereby they can't access the cervix at all. Lots of older women have stenosis.
It's not always that simple lol! A lot of hysteroscopies fail, due to STENOSIS of the cervix....
Had this done yesterday under GA went well i believe, 2 polyps removed, came out of anesthesia fairly quick, coughing up lots of phlegm, but not much pain except sore throat. At least not till next day, lots of pain in ribs upper back & both arms.. excruciating when i cough in ribs. I found this, trying to find answers to why I'm having this pain. No pain in vagina or uterus unless I'm standing a while and then it just feels heavy and starts aching. Has anyone else ever experienced the rib, upper back arm pain after Hystroscopy D&C with GA? 6:08
Please do not attempt this procedure without anesthesia. The pain from the instrument used to hold the cervix in place is on the level of SAW ! I took 800 Motrin and 650 mg Tylenol and it was no match. I had to stop and have the procedure done with anesthesia. I experienced symptoms of grief and cramping for 8 days afterward. Take control of your options. Don’t let the doctor tell you otherwise.
I did 20 sessions of radio therapy for prostate cancer 4 years ago together with 6 Zoladex injections. I still have to pee several times at night. From Malta 8.30 am.
After all tests are done, you have problems. Your GP doesn’t give a fuck!
had 20 treatments very little side effects.im six weeks after my treatment and basically back to my normal self.the nhs were absolutley fantastic.my advice is be possitive and don.t let any negative feelings ruin your day.kick that cancer out of your life.
Why does YT keep showing me Prostate cancer therapies? Does it know something I dont???
must say that I have enormous respect for you Dr kanayo Peterson considering the manner in which my wife receive her complete treatment for HIV infection and cancer, thanks for coming to my rescue sir.

No ED???
I researched this extensively before I attempted to have this done in September 2023. I took pain killers before as they told me to do. In the first attempt I vomited and experienced shock symptoms. To be told it doesn't hurt is a lie. How could it not hurt?? Something is put up inside you & things are cut out of you for goodness sake. I had this finally done under anaesthesia December 2023. It is positively medieval torture without. I left feeling what is wrong with me that it hurt so much? Please ladies, insist on anaesthesia. Don't put yourself through what I went through. Xx
Thank you, I’m worried, so you made it for thickness and bleeding? And what about noe is bleeding stop?
Ok, why is it called “RADIOTHERAPY “? Radio waves are way too long to be focused on a square inch or less target! To me, I imagine the term should probably be RADIATION therapy. The wavelength of even GIGAHERTZ Radio waves is about 11.803 inches at 1 GIGAHERTZ (in free space).
I noticed that she called it radio therapy but the correct term is radiation therapy.
I had this procedure done several days ago. The surgery included a polypectomy. If general anesthesia wasn’t an option, I most assuredly wouldn’t have consented to it. No twilight or light sedation will do for this so called procedure. Heck, the transvaginal ultrasound was painful. I wasn’t going to try and grit it out on a table with a doctor scraping my insides. There’s no reason not to give general anesthesia. It’s not a price issue. They just don’t like putting people under. Too bad. I signed forms releasing y’all from liability if I die on the table. I’d rather risk death via general anesthesia than be awake/aware of this procedure. The aftermath pain isn’t as bad as I had anticipated. No cramping. Mostly sore. No anesthesia surgery? Wonderful. Can I have a shot of whiskey and a bullet to bite down on? We’re going dark ages medically anyway. Pain management happens for hospice patients exclusively. Doctors/surgeons won’t prescribe opiates for post surgical pain anymore. Nope. They advise you to take some Tylenol. I’m simply saying that if pain isn’t manageable socially, we’re in for a world of hurt. The name of the game is patient advocacy. Hard to do for yourself when you’re the sick one.

I am 19 i had it since 15
Excellent
I’m really scared to have it , I don’t have children, I would to know if there any risk .
Had 20 sessions in may and june this year the staff were brilliant
Excellent presentation!
Love how the male doctor describes it as a 'bit of discomfort' as if he knows a single thing about what vaginal pain feels like.
I'm sorry about the man doctor ..
I had that shit 💩 without anaesthetic its real hell
Erectile function depletes as time goes on after radiation.
My daughters chest was burnt black from this. Does it burn the mens bottom too?
Just finished 20 sessions. This video is excellent and the comments by all concerned, particularly the patients, will give people a very clear idea of the process.
I just finished 20 treatments at Oxford. I had diarrhoea after day 3,fatigue and wanting to pee all the time, especiallyat night . I wear protective pads 24/7 & will do so for another month,
I had one a couple of weeks ago, not going to lie it was very painful but the nurses were all wonderful and helped me through it, however, they didn’t get quite what they needed and I’ve ended up having to go back next week for another under a general anaesthetic. I had a colonoscopy the week before and had sedation, just don’t understand why we’re not offered it for a hysteroscopy!
It's better to do under General anesthesia
I wondered about sedation too??!
@@jomorrey8541 doesn’t make sense to me to be offered it for a colonoscopy, it probably all boils down to time and money
What is the update on this qFIT pilot study? It would be nice to benchmark this study.
I'd like to know what effect a blood thinner like rivaroxaban or edoxaban has in promoting minor bleeding in the large bowel. Before I started taking rivaroxaban about five years ago all my blood test results for haemoglobin came back within range (above 132). But since I was put on rivaroxaban in 2018, which was later changed to edoxaban, three annual tests have shown anemia with hb values below 132. I had a colonoscopy in 2020 and no cancer was found, but a lot of inflammation and signs of diverticulitis. Now in September 2023 I've had another colonoscopy and, this time, also a gastroscopy. I'm now waiting for the results of the biopsies to come back. It seems strange that my hb was always in range before starting blood thinners.
Used to hate it when I got ready, machine started whirring and 5 minutes later, staff come in and say "sorry your bladder's not full enough" and I'd have to drink some more, wait in the cubicle, bursting to go, praying they'd call me ASAP. Never had problem clearing my bowels before so was free of gas. Overall v grateful for NHS treatment having had chemo, TURP, hormone injections as well as radiotherapy. The burning after urination and peeing up to 20 times a day were side effects after radiotherapy but now that a month has elapsed these have ceased. Just waiting for follow up consultation with oncologist to give outcome of PSA test.
This procedure can spread cancer if cancer is found in your uterine, unfortunately. However, they don’t tell women this. They just go in scrapping your womb and spreading cancer cells….
It's rare but the procedure is essential for the patient
This video is misleading, it really doesn't sound like most women tolerate the pain given the comments. I had this procedure this morning and the pain was horrendous; I will be returning to have it done under sedation/general anesthetic.
I am supposed have this done today but because I have nasal congestion, my Dr said I have to go home and be rescheduled when I am better. Due to while unconscious my nose to be free for air to avoid choking while unconscious. So I guess I will be administered Analgesic or so to avoid feeling the pains.
