Hi
My name is Keith and I’m interested in boats.
I have rescued a boat from being scrapped and I’m trying to get it back on the water. I have started with the engine, if I can get it to work then it will be worth doing the rest.
So if you are interested follow me on this project.

test it under load on the water and at different rpm then you get all the demons and real symptoms and errors from the engine. What they show is only the first test😂
Yes I will when I get it all back together. But you want to see the state of the rest of the boat 👍
well thanks for the explanation, I replace the water pump in that 3.7 and just hook up the engine with water to heat exchanger and overheating problems, got be that thermostat or air in the system, The engine purrs. but I got find why that closed system is over heating.
Thanks for watching my video 👍 Good luck finding your problem. Cheers the face where the manifold meets the header tank.

@Keithsbrokenboats what's ur Facebook? I got the boat put new points and condenser on it and it fired right up took it out 5 times Ober the course of the past month or so then I just took it out yesterday it fired right up it was idling for about 3 minutes then just died and wouldn't restart at all..
my Facebook page is called Keith’s Broken Boats I’m a Facebook novice so have a go at messaging me please. It would be a good experiment for me.
Good old ford 460 1/2 most 1974 ford 460 parts will fit like head gaskets heads engine parts like valves lifters and aluminum heads Some guys even put them in cars the Chevy th 350 th400 trans will fit it with a Chevy bell housing be nice in a mini cooper the biggest 4cy u can get with 250lb of tourqe
Yes the push rods I bought were for a Ford 460. Thanks for your comment 👍
Good job again Keith. Going to do my pump now that you have done this for us. Were you able to locate gauze fo the other tube?
No Still looking. Let me know if you find any. They might be easier to find over there. 👍
Keep me posted 👍
Brain picking time please! Engine started easily and ran smoothly after new points and condenser. However it has now started running rough on start-up, but then would run OK after a couple of 3/4 throttle revs, nice and smooth. Thought it could be dirt in the carb so stripped and carb repair kit installed - gaskets, needle valve, mixture screw, accelerator pump plunger. It wouldn't start so put the old parts back. Still wont start. Have you any ideas why it started running rough but cleared after a couple of revs and what to check for no start please. Thanks in advance. Regards.
Running rough on start up could be a faulty choke (is yours an automatic choke. I’m having issues with mine). You need to check your getting fuel into the carburettor. Take the top off and give the throttle linkage 3 to 4 pumps, you should see fuel squirting out the jets into the primary barrels. You will need to hold the choke open to see down into the barrels when you do this. Idle needles need to be turned in so they just touch the seat and then backed out 2.5 to 3 turns. Lots of small passage ways inside the carburettor that could be blocked. When you had it in bits did you blow everything out with compressed air? Let me know if this is any help.
@@Keithsbrokenboats Hi Keith. Many thanks for that, lots to check. Didn't think of the idle so will give that a go. When it ran rough it sounded like too much fuel - ie choke stuck on (yes it's automatic) and there was fuel dripping into the carb from under the choke flap when the engine was stopped, which initially led me to believe faulty float/needle valve. However it's still doing it with new parts and seems to come from a point much higher than the float chamber. Finally could you tell me how many turns out you have the mixture screw please. Thanks again for your help to date, I'll keep you informed with progress. It's really odd as it started and ran OK at first. Thanks again
I had my mixture screws out 2.5 turns Sounds like you have a needle valve issue if the fuel is coming out in between the air horn and carburettor body
@@Keithsbrokenboats Thanks for your reply. I thought needle valve but I've just replaced it. However I'll strip it back and check. Also think I may have a faulty coil - the + wire is 12.6v but drops to 9.6v when connected. Coil resistance 2.6 ohms. Ah well, the investigation proceeds! It's really odd as it ran beautifully after the new impeller, but gradually got worse and worse until now. I'll let you know progress. Thanks again. All the best.

Oh yeah. Another thing! The Medievals were Police-less. No Constabulary either. No Emergency Services to help you with situations back then, Centuries Ago. Can you imagine that?! No 999 Number Call.
No phone to ring it on either
Correct.
I'd never even noticed it! Thanks for pointing this out, could save a breakdown at sea. Regards.
Glad you found it useful 👍
Beautifully explained, now I understand how it actually works and it is obviously worth checking. What seals the end plates to prevent leakage - I didn't see any gasket? Many thanks for posting, your videos are really helping me to understand my engine.
The end plates are sealed with a rubber gasket which looks exactly the same as the end plate. I should have mentioned and showed it. Thanks for your interest and comments. They are very encouraging and make me want to get on with the next bit. I’m waiting for parts at the moment
@@Keithsbrokenboats Great thanks very much. A item to be checked for bits of the impellor as the bulk of it was welded to the sides of the A drive inlet area. Ah, the things we do for relaxation! Thanks again, kind regards.
I know mind you if you saw what I did for a job you would probably understand my need for tinkering with my own junk

Great video as always Keith. I've got mine running and it is smooth and revs no probs, but I am getting black exhaust smoke. Oil is uncontaminated, water pumps OK. Any ideas please?
I’m led to believe that black smoke is unburnt fuel (it is with diesel engines not sure with petrol) So check your flame arrester is clean not blocked.
@@Keithsbrokenboats Thanks for that keith; so the next question is of course, where is the flame arrester? Have I missed it on your videos? Thanks in advance.
The flame arrestor is fitted to the top of the carburettor it looks like an aluminium air filter. I the video of me starting the engine you can see me talking it off to look down into the carburettor.
@@Keithsbrokenboats Thank you very much. As soon as it stops raining I'll go and check it. Kind regards
Big job mate to restore it.. I had the same Signature hull years ago it was called a 2250L, it had a 200ph Merc Black Max when I bought it, I blew that up, and then put a 200 four stroke Zuki on it. They are a good bay boat, not really suited for offshore, big swell.. Funnily enough it was nearly a 23ft boat but I thought it only had the capability of a 19ft boat, as it use porpoise badly. They are extremely light in the front bow section, throw in a heap of anchor chain, that will accommodate that lol.. Or trim tabs will fix also. I'll keep an eye on your restoration. Cheers 🍻
Thanks for the information. Do you have any pictures of your boat that you could send me via my Facebook page so I see what to aim for
Another very informative vid. Thanks.
Thanks for watching 👍
I have a 78 searay sedan bridge with 2 mercruiser 470s. Upgrade to alternator, 4 barrel carb and 4” manifolds

Thanks Daniel
Once again great informational and how to do it. Inspiration to people who do this work them selves.
keith, I just rebuilt the same motor! Got it on a Mirage Cuddy Cabin Boat. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks a lot, it’s good to have a network of knowledge to fall back when it all hits the fan.
Your show-and-tell is very well done. Good stuff. Thanks.

I now have a Facebook page for this project called Keith’s Broken Boats. So if you want to contact me you can.
Hey Keith I would like to echo the others in as your videos were informative. I have recently bought a boat with a 3.7 in it and all I am keeping is the engine. May not even keep the exhaust on the engine either. I am going to try to swap it into an old jeep I have. You would be welcome to the rest of it, outdrive prop gimbal all the "boat stuff" Shipping might be prohibitive??? as I live in the US, Oklahoma to be exact. I dont know much on how you would contact me. let me know on here if I need to do something else. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your content. Thanks.
Thanks for your comment Sounds like you have an interesting project. Most people normally take car engines and try to fit them into boats. I’m trying to set up a Facebook page for the channel and when I do it will be a better line of communication. It will also let people share their projects. Thanks again 👍
Dude thank you. so glad i found your videos im currently trying to fix a fuel leak where the hard line goes into the carb
Thanks for watching
I just got a 19ft bluewater with this 3.7l 470
Well done I’m going to set up a Facebook page for the channel, when it’s up and running maybe you could share your project on it Thanks 👍
@Keithsbrokenboats yeah for sure I'm making a video right now about the leaking fuel line and setting the points
This is a bummer Keith. I have met with similar from time to time, frustrating to say the very least.. These 3.7 vids of yours have given inspiration to work on mine. Have a Beer about it and try to relax. Please PM with an address as I wish to send you something in the mail.
Thanks I will do. Not sure how to private message you on you tube but I will find a way of contacting you
Hi I have now set up a Facebook page called Keith’s Broken Boats. Message me via this page for a better line of communication 👍
Keith, don't give up. You inspired me with my project. I've got a 1979 boat with the same engine. I've done a total engine brake down because it was all locked up due to water damage. You have really helped me. Remember where there is will there is a way. I'm pretty sure that most all of your followers are with me on this. Things have a way of working out when you believe in something. We're counting on you my friend.
Thanks for your support When things start going wrong a bit of encouragement goes a long way 👍
Your videos have helped so much with my rebuild of my engine. Happy to pay it forward. I've got some of the parts you need. Like for sure the power steering. All you got to take care of is the shipping. Let me see what I have when I get home find a way to contact me.
Wow thanks very much for that. I think I have found a steering unit in the UK which could be the start of things taking a turn for the better. Thanks for the support.
@@Keithsbrokenboats okay I also have your gimbal housing. I don't have any Rams though
Thanks That is great. If I smash mine I know where to come
Congrats Keith! I never doubted for a moment it wouldn't start!!
Thanks buddy I couldn’t have done it without your help. Giving me the manual really helped
Well done Keith👍, good to see you’ve got the engine going. We can’t wait to see the boat on the water. I’m also pleased to see you had adult supervision while you were doing it - even if he didn’t get his hands out of his pockets 😊
Thanks 👍
Keith, where did you get your gaskets from please. Thanks.
I ordered them from a company in the USA SBB Sports LCC South Carolina. I found them on EBay. Getting parts was hard trying to find them at a reasonable price

I have the same motor also. Overheated by the previous owner so these vids are invaluable. Many thanks for posting.
Good glad they are helpful
Never in doubt you would get it started Keith! Well done 🎉
👍
Just bought an old(ish) Fletcher 17gts with this engine, which had overheated. Your vids will help me to analyses and hopefully get it going again. Great explanations, many thanks.
Thanks Glad they are of interest to you
Keith, which fuel do you use, E5 or E10 or doesn't it matter? Could you also tell me please what grade of oil you use - We have just bought a fletcher 17 GTS with this engine. Needs a lot of TLC - it overheated but not seized so you vids are really welcome. Many thanks.
I used E10 but I don’t think it really matters with these engines. I also just used a good quantity 10w 40 engine oil
@@Keithsbrokenboats Thank you.
Brilliant, well done.
Thanks it took a bit of time but I got there in the end 👍
Hi Kieth, I've followed you every step of the way and shared your tears and joy. What a fantastic achievement, I thought that this day would never come. The big Merc lives again to cruise the ocean waves once again. Well done my friend, now onwards and upwards with the rest of the restoration. I'd love to volunteer for the maiden voyage lol
Thanks a lot for that bud. Hopefully this is the first stage completed now on to the next.
This is brilliant. We've done sailing, we've done UK canals and now in our twilight years we've bought a Fletcher 17 GTS with this engine. So these videos will provide the knowledge and guidance I need to fault find and refurbish the motor. Thank you very much Keith. Regards
I’m really pleased that my videos have not only been of interest but useful to you. It’s really nice to have positive feedback on what I’m trying to do.
Great camp set up 👍
Yes I thought so It’s a brilliant festival and well worth a visit if you’re around Evesham on the first weekend in August
I know that wall tents and umbrella tents were common in the middle ages but I was not aware bell back wedge tents were used as well. We use then for 18th century/ American Revolutionary War reenactments.
I’m not a historian I just visited the battle of Evesham reenactment festival and filmed the camp as I walked by.
@@Keithsbrokenboats Where was the encampment located?
@@Keithsbrokenboats Location?
The location of the camp is in the park, Evesham, Worcestershire UK It takes place on the first weekend in August and it’s massive. Re-enacters come from all over the UK and Europe to take part in the Battle of Evesham
Well done Keith, what a journey I've enjoyed your videos and listening about it in the yard. Can't wait to see the video of it in the boat.👍
Yeah me to but there’s still a lot of work to do
congrats sir. thanks for all the help. bought a boat with this engine and told it had a fuel issue. found hole in piston and your vids are helping me reassemble after my teardown

Congrats!! I have the exact same engine and i'm working on it. Just got the rod bearings changed
Thanks Keep at it and you will get there 👍
Congratulations keithhave really enjoyed your build along. Will ook forward to see it on the water.
Thanks Could be a while, I will do a boat tour soon and you will see how much I have to do to it. 👍
Hello bud..Well congrats to you on getting this bad beast up and running. You have spent so much man hours on it to this video of the engine running...Its near the time for the restore..That does sound sweet..Fair play chap...
Thanks
Nice to hear the roar of that engine! Nicely done.
Thanks I’m really pleased that it started. I was a bit apprehensive
How many times can you do that to the valve seat before it's too worn?
It all depends on how worn or how badly pitted the seat is. Lapping is only good for removing minor pitting. Major wear or damage needs to be looked at by an engineer who can machine or replace the seats.
Once again Keith. Great and informative information. An inspiration to do it yourselfers.
Thanks for your comment. I really appreciate them.
Awesome video. Well done! Thanks for this!
