Limit Pushing PlayStation Games (That No One Ever Talks About)
OCP Plus! Damdam Stompland video
The PS1 has a huge library, no surprise that there's more than a few games in there that seem to be lost in the mists of time I've got a selection here to show you that are fun, forgotten, graphically impressive but also not particularly expensive to by or hard to get hold of.

Thank you so much for the call back to jumping flash! I felt ripped off when I bought crash bandicoot and then played Mario 64 at Walmart and saw the fully 3-D rendering background. Then I played jumping flash and felt vindicated for my purchase. for youngsters out there. 3-D was the big deal back then. true 3-D that is. We’d even sacrifice gameplay for an immersive experience. But jumping flash was great. it gave me vertigo the 3d was so good! Outside of jet Moto I couldn’t think of a better 3-D experience for the platform.

Hey Taito's Ray Tracers was actually previewed in 1995 American gamer magazines and also iirc in Next Generation aka Edge magazine UK... the game was clearly released in 1996 and I don't believe it was released outside Japan... unless it did errmm and got forgotten. Gran Turismo 1 however actually shipped in Japan in very late 1997... so there was no competition there... when Gran Turismo officially released in North America and European regions, it was 1998... by that time Ray Tracers was a long time... and it is in a different category... The real problem with Ray Tracers is that Taito decided to think this up during the fairly early life cycle of the PS1 and it shows and as such is a fair release for back then but it also probably failed to sell as much copies as Namco's Ridge Racer Revolution and Rage Racer which iirc were the more dominant PS1 graphical racing games of the time and might have been grating to go from Rage Racer's smooth and fast graphics and sharp 3d models to this extremely angular car designs... Taito's Ray Tracers should have been revived for the Sony PS2 however and actually used on the PS2 arcade hardware System 243 but sadly that never happened because by then they might have reasoned that the PS1 game did not sell enough and did not warrant a sequel. Love and Destroy is pretty awesome and a victim of the types of games we were being prevented from getting localized for some bizarre reason... especially when the PS1 early adopters were working young adults, not little toddlers waiting for xmas gifts and no offense to those but the working adult gamer had a lot of buying power and it is possible that some of these games might have had some sequels if they were released closer to the Japanese releases.

henlo, long time RE4 modder here! The game is rendered in 4:3 and the bars are actually just an overlay to add the cinematic look to the game. -The game has a limit of 6 lights interacting with one object at a time, and one of those lights is capable of being dedicated for dynamic directional shadows. The light system and camera system were built to work together. You would walk into trigger areas and that would determine the characteristics of the camera for that area. This would also toggle light groups on and off. -It wasn't able to handle traditional transparency, and actually broke up the drawing of things into 5 passes. This simulated transparency. You can see the side effect of this as the developers messed up the hierarchy in some places like in the bushes in the farm. -The game actually doesn't have traditional "collision" there is a collision mesh that is used to determine where the player can walk, and another collision mesh that determines where bullets can hit. This means if you happen to clip out of the SAT (the player collision area) you can just sorta wander around in the void no problem you won't fall into the abyss. - RE4 had inverse kinematics where his feet would actually collide with the floor, and rudimentary DoF (like Windwaker) -Another cool thing is the game actually used bones dedicated to cloth physics. You can see it on leon's jacket. This was part of the lighting system for some reason though? This game wasn't very "dynamic" All of the rooms were hard coded. They had functions that were called when a room was entered (room_init functions), and once per frame while in the room (room_main functions). This was how they got away with a lot of what they did. This made it really difficult to mod :c Another thing too is a lot of the levels had copies of each of the textures, animations, effects, etc in them. This kept all of the data close together on the CD reducing load times; however, it is one of the reasons the game ended up having two disks. Some things were shared between levels, but that was typically reserved for characters, enemies, etc. I can pretty much tell you anything about this game if you're interested. I have reverse engineered most of the file formats and I have actually created an entire suit of modding tools for the game. In fact I have done so with GC, PS2, and UHD (Steam). Each of them have unique changes to them. FUN FACT - A lot of the developers who worked on RE4 ended up moving over to platinum games and made NeiR: Automata. The game has a surprising amount of similarities to how RE4 systems worked. albeit significantly more refined.

You didn't live if you didn't sift through stuff like "Willow Pattern Adventure" on disks full of pirated crap from yard sales, with other incomprehensible early bullshit like "Ah Diddums" and "Pooyan". That feeling of having a new blank disk with one of several simple titles written in pen on the label, "Willow," selecting "Willow" from the cracked menu, waiting on the whirring of the drive for something to load...and then it's some creepy east-asian fever dream. It was still fun to explore what was on the hundreds of disks we had growing up, but beside the dead disks were duds like these and other amateur efforts that made the good games shine!

I remember at the time the Gamecube was just laughable to own, in the UK as a British teen it was all about killing things which the PS2 had in abundance. The cool 'mature' factor was with Sony. It didn't help its flagship colour was purple and its flagship games (Maio Sunshine, Windwaker and Mario Kart) although amazing were experimental in appearance and gameplay. Playing both now the Gamecube is misunderstood, it plays games with much faster loading times and is graphically superior.

a preview video for Ray Tracer was on the pack-in disc with a copy of Ultimate Game Players magazine that I randomly happened to get from the shelf back in the day... I didn't even have a computer to put the disc in, I loaded it on a powermac 6500 in my middle school tech-ed class lol There was some footage of Zelda 64 as well, and a handful of other games (there MIGHT have even been a small clip of Tempest 2000, but I can't recall for certain). The game had always been an enigma to me, and I always wanted to play it... I could just download an ISO, but I'd like to find it in the wild, and I am genuinely surprised that all these years later I have still not laid my hands on it anywhere. Still haven't played it proper to this day.

And from what I see I see both merits and demerits that would make it an impossibility to localize- it seems to have the regular polish of a Inti Creates game, but also be as slight as they usually are. They really have been doing small little nuggets of gold as long as they've existed, haven't they...

Yes. But the fact that the Genesis was two years older and Nintendo had all that time to create something mind-blowing with that extra time and the Genesis was able to keep up that well given that it was an older system is telling. It shows Segas hardware team were on top of it and once Tom Kalinski came in, Segas marketing team were a lot smarter than Nintendos. It really is amazing the Genesis was able to keep up and that's where any Nintendo fan ought to have that respect for the Genesis. The 32X however? Not so much.... It was an add on that would have been smart by Sega using their Genesis reputation to prolong it's life but, Sega of Japan just got too nervous rather than pacing themselves which causes a lot of problems looking back in hindsight. But, still, when Nintendo said "we're getting Mortal Kombat", Segas two year older console was right behind them saying "Yeah, we have that too" and Sega was less restrictive. SEGA was able to run games the SNES had and in many occasions could show it could run it smoother than the SNES version and it was sharper on the Genesis with a higher screen resolution and faster CPU the SNES suffered from frame dips and loading times where the Genesis tore right through its data and went to work. We saw that now, but was brought up most in the Xbox 360 vs PS3 era where the PS3 was always on the smasher for having poor frame rates. Yup, the fact the Genesis could keep up with the Super Nintendo was amazing. 32X, it could've been interesting to see where it went but, again, Japan got too nervous, and I would argue the SEGA Saturn had a MUCH better library of games than the N64. We almost saw Resident Evil 2 on the Saturn as RE2 was everywhere and on everything it could be, but we would've seen Shenmue on the Saturn originally. The Console Wars are always fun to watch to see how each console gave unique experiences. We all just defended, adamantly, what we had. Not many families got to have both so it was like defending your families honor, but ideally it would have been better to have both, or all three with the TGFX 16 as well, but that's not always the case. These days? The Console Wars aren't the same. The Xbox hardware and PS hardware are too identical with Xbox being afraid of being left behind and where the hardware is so identical (PlayStation having backed down after the PS3 opting to do for off the shelf parts to keep development simple like developing for a PC, which now we know is a croc and just an excuse because games today take forever to develop when it was supposed to be easier) console makers are too afraid to venture out and take gambles rather than just commiting and going. Does Xbox want to be seen as innovative? Then eliminate your box and go full on streaming with the subscription model. Sony tried that and saw it didn't work as they wanted when they acquired Gaikai when Gaikai was taking in OnLive during the streaming era, but SEGA Channel was the first Game Pass and it didn't work so, Xbox doesn't know gaming. I digress, it's its own era but it was THIS era that was the most fun, the most interesting, and best arguements to hear in the school bus and in Billy Madison
