Why I Chose the BMW i3 REx Over the Tesla Model 3, Pt. 2, Your Questions Answered
This is a video answering the top questions regarding my first video about why I chose the BMW i3 REx over the Model 3. I talk about the Leaf, the Volt and other topics.
The first video is here:

Hi everyone, it's Justin again and about 2 weeks ago I made a video about why I bought this 2014 CPO i3 REx last year instead of reserving the Tesla Model 3 and since then I have had a lot of comments and questions, mostly positive, about it, so in this in this video I am going to answer the most common questions.
First of all I want to thank everyone for watching the first video and for their likes and questions about this car. I tried to answer everyone that I could and I will do the same for this one, so just let me know in the comments below.
The most common comment was about how the i3 is not a fair comparison to the Model 3 and that I should compare it to the Volt or the Leaf. Now while the Volt is a great car, it is very different than the i3. The Volt is mostly a gas powered hybrid car that weighs over a thousand pounds more than the i3 and has a 8.9 gallon gas tank compared to the i3’s 2.4 gallon tank. The battery to gas ratio in the Volt is 53 miles battery and 367 miles gas compare to the i3’s 80-100 mile battery/80 mile gas range. The range extender on the i3 is not designed for extended travel on a daily basis but as quote “as an emergency fall back.” So,the i3 is primarily an EV with a small engine while the Volt is primarily an ICE car with a small battery.
I do hope that with the release of the many new EV’s in the near future that the charging infrastructure catches up to Tesla and proves to be as reliable, but as it is now, the only all electric car that I would even consider as my sole car is a Tesla. The i3 REx was next in line because with the small gas generator, I knew that I could at least make it home or to a working charging station. The i3 was also more versatile in being able to transport my gear, bikes etc and that is why that video was about how I decided on the i3 between the 2 cars.
Other comments that I received had to do with the special tires that the i3 uses. As it is now, Bridgestone is the only company that makes these tires and a new set will set me back about $650. I ve put about 8000 miles on these tires and as far as the dealership is concerned, they are still in great shape, but it is worth noting that the tire options are limited at this point.
As far as the cost difference between the 2 cars, the Model 3 would be about 11k more than what I spent on the CPO i3 after all of the rebates or about 185 dollars more a month which was in my budget. A commenter mentioned that I would also save about $350 a year, or about 30 dollars a month in Vehicle Licence Tax if I chose the Telsa because it is an Alternative Fuel Vehicle. That would make it around 155 dollars more a month which is well worth it for brand new EV with an unparalleled charging network, but as the first video show’s, I need a car that can cover my cargo needs as well. The Model Y that Tesla is working on looks to be fitting this bill and will definitely be a consideration when it is released Also, I just don’t think it is the right time to spend more on an EV than the technology allows. I personally think that it is too early to be paying 50k for a car that is ready for what the industry might look like in the future regarding autonomous driving. It’s like paying 2000 dollars for a laserdisc player in the early 90’s not knowing that DVD players will soon be the main format.
As it is, the i3 REX is designed for the industry as it stands now and I am sure that I will be ready to move on in 3-4 years when the EV industry is much stronger. So those are some answers to your questions about the i3 and thanks again for watching my first video. Let me know what you would like to see in future videos about this car and if you like the information in this video, click the like button and subscribe to the channel so that you don't miss any future videos.

    Something not often realised about the i3 is how thermally efficient it is. There is no major thermal mass in the passenger cell so the AC doesn't have to work hard to cool it down or keep it cool/warm.

      Hi James, I sold the i3 Rex and have a Mini Cooper SE on order. The SE is basically an i3 with a lower price tag (and is more efficient according to Bjorn Nyland), plus I wanted a full electric car for less maintenance. A 2015 i3 is a great choice if you find a good deal

    Add a aux 5-10 gallon aux gas tank mod and you'll get plenty of miles with the bimmercode mod. I'll probably never use the "trunk," and thinking of building a customized f1 kevlar/nitrile gas tank that I leave empty until I go on a long road trip. My daily commute is about 44 miles. With heat and ac on, I am only expecting about 40ish miles on my 2014.

    Thanks for the tube - after 3 years your points are still valid - and even though the competition has picked up pace since, also the i3 has depreciated so rapidly that one can get used units on the cheap. Therefore I think it's even better value for money today! (The only downside to the video was the audio track playing solely on right channel - I thought that my headsets were broken. 😬)

    Half-witted review. You don't recommend taking it off-road? Really, you don't? The tires are more for the street? Really? What made you think that? The low profile of the tires or the fact that they are street tires? The i3 is not a competitor to a Tesla 3. Two completely different ranges for two different kind of needs. You should have compared the i3 to an E-Golf or with a similar low-range EV.

    Sorry for the late comment, but your video came up as I'm doing my research on a used BMW i3s Rex (2018 or 2019) vs. used Tesla Model 3 vs. new Mini Cooper SE. Since you previously owned a Mini Countryman, I'm wondering if you would pick the BMW i3s Rex over the Mini Cooper SE--why or why not? And I know you don't have the i3 sport model, but how would you rate the handling of the i3 vs. the Mini "go-kart" experience? Thanks!

    • @superhostingtucson3302
      @superhostingtucson3302 Před 3 lety

      The i3 has more of a small SUV feeing in the driving position in comparison to a mini SE. THE I3 feels much more open and larger inside with all of the glass, but the SE would be more sporty due to its low position

      @@superhostingtucson3302 Thanks for responding! Just a follow-up question: Besides the higher driving position, how would you say the i3 handling compares to the Mini in terms of responsiveness-does it have that same go-kart handling?

      @rob3018 Před 2 lety

      @@jamesv.791... Yes, the i3 has amazing go-kart handling, especially if you go for the sporty version, (BMW i3S) which has; a lowered suspension, wider wheels, body and arches. The i3S is even quicker than the standard model too. It's 184hp electric motor can launch from 0-62mph, in an impressive 6.9 seconds... But feels much faster than that when you're behind the wheel!😜🤯

    Various used car publications I've seen indicate that the I3 quality and used car reliability is excellent, but they don't say the same about other BMWs--or Teslas for that matter. One national used car publication mentioned numerous problems with every other BMW and Tesla they reviewed--in contrast to used I3s they they claim are typically highly reliable.
