Illegal fishing and land grabs push Cambodian coastal communities to the brink
Follow Mongabay journalist Gerry Flynn as he travels to Cambodia's coast to investigate the impact of rampant illegal fishing and onshore development on coastal communities.
Fish catches in Cambodia's waters have dropped precipitously in recent years, and so have small-scale fishers’ incomes. The problem, they say, is that commercial trawlers have been illegally entering their fishing grounds, scraping the sea clean of life and, with it, their community’s ability to survive. And its not just at sea they are facing problems. Cambodia's coastline is being bought up by private companies with influential connections, forcing fishers off their land and leaving them fighting for survival.

zhlédnutí 113Před dnem
Two experts join the Mongabay Newscast to discuss the decline in koala populations in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), even as the government green lights development projects on remaining koala habitats that aren't being replaced by biodiversity offset schemes which have been put in place, ecologist Yung En Chee of the University of Melbourne, explains. Meanwhile, the promised Gr...

The world is addicted to toilet paper. In 2023 alone, 45.96 billion kilograms of toilet paper were sold worldwide, and the number is set to rise. Toilet paper has been linked to deforestation around the world, intensive energy use, and toxic chemicals in our waterways. But only 30% of the world actually uses it. So is there a better way of getting ourselves clean, or are we too attached to our ...

HEATED Discourse: Media objectivity in an environmental crisis
This was too frustrating to listen to in one session. Taken as a whole, I don't think the interview puts either participant in a good light.
Almost everyone commenting on "degrowth," on whatever side, seems to be profoundly confused about what economic growth even means. Here, both the interviewer and interviewee seem very much in that pattern. I can't take their comments seriously, when they haven't even clearly defined their terms.
Very wellmade video, informative and well edited. I'll get an A now
Food is a wepond against poor. Be happy they make food for the world.
one way to fight illegal fishing is to stop eating fish
thank you Mongabay for the story of this brave man, I fell very sorry for the immense loss of the family and the community
So what your saying is is that environmentalism can only work if everyone wants it?
The world elites are really doing a great job destroying this world for their gain.
its so sickening this kind of video has a million times less views than a random girl doing squats on TikTok. As weird as it sounds - seems like AI might be our last chance to focus on the real issues and wake up.
😥
Exceptional work! A truly important story, well told! Stunning cinematography!

Tragedy of the Commons… when everyone is after a resource they feel is a free for all.
Just awful. Good reporting.
❤you have to have love❤
How can people help with this issue?...it would be good to have some coverage about that.
Sharing the video and spreading the word would help. The government tries to suppress this type of reporting and people speaking out so when they do, it's with great risk and sacrifice. We can make sure they are heard. Hopefully the international community, particularly those countries pouring money into conservation and development will exert some pressure for the Cambodian government to uphold its own laws.
The Cambodian communities need an organization like sea Shepard to help with this issue, if to start something similar
Great journalism
The Cambodian and Chinese governments are directly to blame for destroying the peoples lives, and our oceans. China is also illegally killing millions of sharks every year for shark fins, and trawl fishing all over the world. Who will stand up and physically stop corrupt China? ...no one. China is taking over the world economically and destroying the ecosystems we need to survive
Such an important issue, glad mongobay is covering illegal fishing.

I disliked Rachel’s style. Instead of extracting the most valuable information from an obviously well researched person she misinterpreted and tried to put words in her guest mouth. We all suffer from cognitive bias, even you Rachel.
Very interesting !!!

First need to have several sanctuary areas to help with bio diversity and to hopefully be used when population gets larger. The second is to seek aid from foreigners who have experience in breeding and also seeking financial aid from groups who help in assisting in saving animals. The third is to educate the locals in what a beautiful creature that they have and how help is need to save these beautiful rhino's from extinction.
I pray that the Indonesia people and Government will be able to save just a beautiful and majestic animal
Are the people of the forest aware that they could live healthy lives by eating a vegetarian diet? Many of us in the industrialized world do not eat meat at all, even though it is available everywhere. Could they not farm and grow all their own food and even sell it to others if they plant enough. I'm just curious, since I don't know much about their lifestyle and culture.
Thanks for your information salam dari 🇲🇨 like it
Thx
Most so-called Humans do not see themselves as animals. "We;re not animals, we're above them. Sadly, these creatures do not see themselves as a part of Nature. Be they rich or poor. "The Right To Roam" needs much more coverage throughout the media.
More power to your elbow & legs Jon.
Allow more people to get involved.
❤
Cincinnati really helped with figuring out the breeding program I hope that Indonesia will be able to save this majestic mamma. In the U.S we almost lost the Buffalo and Bald Eagle, but with hard work and the right laws we were able to bring them back from the brink of extinction
Thanks!!!
These people risk their lives to protect wildlife and waterways yet where i live people biycott and get angry when laws are passed to stop the use of plastic shopping bags. The west is disgusting
Such important work to highlight. Thanks Monga Bay
Plastic can be tackled by litterboom, but it is also imperative to stop pouring sewage into rivers.
