Navigating The Internal: Photographic work by Karen Hymer
Navigating the Internal explores themes of isolation, loneliness, and body image.
As a single woman over 60 with a changing body, Karen Hymer makes self-images to navigate her internal thoughts and feelings. Evolving from years of photographing herself, these hand colored pigment prints blur the line between photographic reality and color illusion. Silk hangings and gilded prints will also be on display.
Karen Hymer is a Silver City artist and owner of Light Art Space located at 209 West Broadway, Silver City, NM.

    Awesome work Karen. One question, how do you do your test times? One test for the first exposure and one for the second one?

    • @karenhymer5025
      @karenhymer5025 Před rokem

      yes, they are different times. I use one large plate as a test and do a grid on it - email me if you would like more details. karenhymer@gmail.com

    Is the aquatint screen needed when positive is produced with ink jet / laser printer ? Stochastic screen should be integrated into printed image or not?

    • @karenhymer5025
      @karenhymer5025 Před rokem

      Yes, you do need to use the aquatint screen. I expose the plate first with the screen and second with the positive.

    Dear Karen i think Polymer Photogravure is a Way of printing that i will try in the next Month. But one Question is how many Prints can i make with one Polymer-Plate? Thanks in Advanced and a great 2022. Thomas from Germany

      Hi. The plates are very sturdy, I've made 25 to 30 prints and you could keep going. They tend to boa little but the pressure of the press makes him still print well. In the US it is a little hard to get the plates but I like the solar play brand ones best. Good luck! It is a super fun process

  • @toomuchrose

    Strictly speaking this isn't photo-gravure, it's photo-polymer intaglio. A photo-gravure is made by etching an image on a plate in a mordant, such as nitric acid or ferric chloride, to give an etched intaglio image. There is no etching involved in this process. Nice work, nonetheless.

    • @dlw3006
      @dlw3006 Před 5 lety

      Strictly speaking you are wrong - this is a photo-gravure process as much as if the print was produced by a copper plate etched by acid is. Just because the polymer plate is etched with water instead of an acid does not change anything; it's still an "etched" plate. A simple check of the dictionary would have told you so - "Photogravure is any of various processes, based on photography, by which an intaglio engraving is formed on a metal plate, from which ink reproductions are made." I suppose you could make the argument that it's not a metal plate but after being cured it's actually harder than a copper plate for gravure printing. Nonetheless you're right that she does nice work. In fact after checking her work is excellent and this is a good video explaining the photogravure process for those that did know or understand the process.
