Scrapping VAT on sunscreen will not (necessarily) reduce the retail price by 20%. This is because the price is already pinned at what it is, the benefit will go to the retail outlet.
Yes but the retail outlet will have the opportunity to lower their prices while keeping their profit margins, allowing them to become more competitive. That's basic economics.
@@jscz Hence "necessarily". This assumes price is the barrier rather than lack of awareness. Should (sun) hats be VAT exempt? Same function so ... In the end it is a nice idea, gets headlines may increase awareness etc. Though if a parent thinks "Well now the price of suncream has dropped by 60p it is worth stopping my child (and me) getting skin cancer" the problem is elsewhere.

Norman was why I am a lib dem. Very glad you won it back. Nice of you to be polite to Maria, but she was awful. Seaford was my hometown as a child. Lewes was where I went to school. Newhaven was where we travelled through and where my parents owned the Cloud 9 club in the 80s and into the 90s. The older residents of the constituency will remember it. Norman won my parents over.

Great speech by Alison - I thought it was really interesting that she highlighted the speech made by her predecessor in 1974 which highlighted many of the same issues as are relevant today.

Right you are Gibbs. It would also be useful if there was more readily available education on respecting people of different origins and identities.
If your going to increase (Capital Gains Tax) CGT, please do it in a wealth redistribution manner by restoring the threshold from when CGT is payable to at lease ÂŁ12,000 per year and increase the % rates. Also restore the income tax thresholds, even if that means cancelling the % rate tax cut. We don't want to tax the ordinary people more for investing to combat inflation or keeping up earnings with cost of living.
I love a maiden speech. It's the most personal statement most MPs make in parliament and gives small regions a spotlight for a moment. After that, parliament sometimes feels a bit like two sides of parrots, all towing whatever line is in vogue, and using the highlighted phrases ''coalition of chaos'' or ''strong and stable'' or whatever is meant to settle in the minds of watchers. I know, it's the reality of party politics but the upshot is, the maiden speeches sound refreshing and genuine in comparison.
