I have done several podcasts which have much better audio if you're interested in those.
I think this is a very good example of how powerful the level of coercive control was on you as parents and on the group at that point.
Being born into a cult and entering a cult as an adult have very real and significant differences .
@@SaffronHammer absolutely. My kid was named by the guru. Their way out is soooo different.
@@quityourcult943 in reading research about cult trauma and recovering from cults, one huge difference is that we born-ins never had a True Self to go back to. Being raised in a cult from infancy, causes us to stay in an adolescent mindset, emotionally and intellectually stunted. If one wakes up at age 30, 40, or 60, those of us born in must go through all the learning that young adults do normally--so much to learn. And the healing from the trauma of being raised in a Doomsday cult, thinking since infancy that the world is ending any day, any minute, and that an angry god will kill you for your last mistake, for even thinking the wrong thing--so much healing on top of so much learning. I do not have a brain that was never imprinted with this terror. My brain never knew a minute of rest. Constnatly vigilant, on high alert. Our only social interactions were with fellow cult members, and the threat of being cut off--shunned--loomed over our heads from before I had learned to read--I knew doing the wrong thing, believing the wrong thing, saying the wrong thing would get you cut off from family, the entire social group, as well as eternal destruction.
there needs to be a task force that infiltrates these places of abuse, i feel compelled to go into these false spiritual places and speak truth
what makes you think theres no power struggle in the world 😅
if I said that, I certainly didn't mean it in that way. Of course there are power struggles everywhere, all the time. ( :
please elaborate
Frankly, even if the magic was real, that doesn't give someone the right to have control over people in the way these folks often do. It's destructive, as everyone is imperfect and therefore nobody should be given ultimate control. Thank you very much for this interesting presentation.
@@EmberHolly that’s a really good point! Thank you for the comment.
Thank you for posting this :)
From what I have been able to discern, mostly from research and the labor lawsuit, the *Family* (Dean Greenberg, his sister, son, and wives #1, 2 &3) have a “family trust”. Some of the businesses have his name on them as CEO or agent, but most of the property is in the name of “Dayemi Tariqat” etc, so probably the “non profit”. They have an awful lot of business registrations for such a small group. But only the 3 wives and blood relatives control and have access to the money. Pretty sure they have "Family money" as well as what they've stolen from their followers. There is one active, long time cult member that I know of working in the office of the Music Department at SIU. I have at least one paper written by a student that shows the influence of another advisor and her spiritual teacher on this student, whether or not the student ever met him. The advisor/teacher is in class quoting her guru. And Dayempur herbals continues to do business all over the region. They have products in stores in towns where no one knows who they are. Most people in Carbondale don’t know that when you go looking for natural health services a good bit of what you will find is Dayemi cult members. It's shocking how many insidious ways they have to recruit people in this town. People who are not part of the group have told stories on line about. hard attempts by members to recruit them. It’s so incredibly disgusting to me that they are targeting women with their "women's health conference" and that the city does nothing. It's also disgusting that there are heirs that are WOMEN that plan to perpetuate the abuse. It’s clear the rebranding, the “changing of the guard” is happening now in Carbondale in their businesses. Leopards rebrand their spots. Like Bagwhan Shree Rashneesh becoming Osho. Thank you T.
That was very brave, T. And BOY the receipts!! The Karbala thing...just...wow. Wow.
I hope it went well!
Oh my 🥹 I love the glasses journey. You’re beautiful!!
I believe you
I like the orange ones and the striped ones. You do you!! Thanks for sharing T.
I really dig the horizontal striped ones, flashback to 1988!
Lol, this was great. 😂
Hey! This one is new to me. I was raised in the Conservative Holiness Movement cult. Happened to find your channel tonight while looking up the Carbondale area. I plan to attend SIU next year. Thanks for sharing your journey! ☮️
Hi! Thanks for reaching out. Let me know if you want to connect when you get here. I'm on campus! glad you got out.....
@@quityourcult943 Great. Would love to connect and swap stories. I've just begun looking into the area for jobs, etc. Anyways your Sufi experience is interesting as my partner has been part of a FB group for years that is a great mix of Sufi thought but definitely not cult. The moderator is great about keeping that sort of thing out.

So many relatable, important reminders in this video. Thank you for doing what you needed to do! <3 "...today we do what we gotta do and hopefully we can minimize the damage done to ourselves..."
Love YOU!
He believes he can control the weather? Wow. I'm sorry you and others have to deal with processing that after the fact. Thank you for sharing that. We had a pretty intense weather day yesterday!
Glad we all dodged that today , great video !!
It seems like a common thread aong the white Sufi groups that went off track was that there was no focus on classical theology or sacred law. If there was, the claims some of these abusive leaders made would have been recognized as false claims according to traditonal Islamic Sufism. Does my hypothesis sound right in any way? Also of course when people are dealing with their previous trauma it can be hard to discern what is the best course of action. As I shared I have been invloved with a few 'sufi' groups over the past 20+ plus years that I feel went off track. Thank goodness I was never a good follower and didn't get very deep in any of the groups. I do the practices from a group now, but I never ignore what my gut is telling me. I am so thankful for my training around ethics when I studied hospital chaplaincy. It is a helpful lens for me to look at how 'clergy' operate. We were taught that if you don't center the needs of those you serve, you have gotten off track. Thank you for sharing your story. It has been helpful for me and brought up some feelings I was unaware that I still needed to process. I wish you success on you journey of healing. Peace.
it's tricky. in this case he did "refer" to Shari'a, Qur'an, etc.. We fasted, did dhikr. Four silsalah hang on the wall. These served to legitimize his power, particularly for the (90%) white people in attendance who would believe anything. He used this grounding to separate our group from the "Sufis of the West" folks. We were the "real thing."
I had a business a few blocks away from the coffee shop you are talking about. First, I always felt creeped out when I went in there. The service workers seemed like they were in a trance. Dark vibes are hard to hide. Also one night a run away from the cult part, came by our shop, almost psychotic looking, trying to seduce my staff in the most open ways. It was gross. No mention of Sufism just that she lived on this “ farm”. But she wanted an orgy. She was out of it.
I appreciate your "coming clean" and introspective examination. You show courage and seem honest in your comments. It's a long and time consuming journey unwinding decades of fear and submission. I can understand your paranoia and suspicion, and am sure it's justified and normal. But, just try to imagine what the son of the guru has gone through all of his life. In my estimation, he too is a victim/survivor and has grown to be his own self, not by any means an extension of his father. He works extremely hard at several enterprises and with success, while managing to revive a much loved local dining and drinking establishment. Yes.....selling booze! I feel you can relax your suspicion that his dream is anything but his own
thank you and yes I hope that is true, but I don't fret about it.
I appreciate you sharing. I was involved with several similar cults over the past twenty years. I actually had a subscription to the magazine for the group you left in the early 2000's. I am still connected to Islamic spirituality, but from a far more nuanced view now. Could you share the reading list from the University course you mentioned in one of your other videos.
How interesting! Nice to "meet" you. I am not sure which reading list you're speaking about...could you be more specific? Was it the reading list I found about coercive control from University of Salford?
Yes! The University of Salford reading list.
@@shaneatkinson617 will you please email me at quityourcult@gmail.com?
Thank you for sharing what must be difficult information. And when I have the opportunity, that is what I tell people-that this group will do whatever it takes to stay "cloaked" and there's more influence in this town than most realize. I will send you a PM on FB to offer you a piece of info... Have a peaceful week and thank you for continuing to share.
You’re doing great T. I’m so happy for you!
What is the cult?
check carbondalesufis.com
They probably vote Democratic too.
Nice summary. - Your older bro.
thanks bro
A+
Continue to shine your light, and wishing you all the happiness!
Why? People like this should be relinquishing/ handing responsibility over to Republicans to run the country. With an apology that you aren't strong enough to challenge people in authority. Facts.
Thank You ! Wise and blessed Real Man !
May i ask which one in particular brother ? And i mean "brother" in a non-cultist way😅

You're looking good T. That life seems to be bringing you happiness and lightness. Keep on!!
In having followed along since the start, I am happy the amount of peace in your life is increasing!
All of this is good to hear and yeah it's clear they drew back quite a bit and are regrouping with new faces... I hope the person who left with their bags knows that there are those in the local community that will support their efforts to extricate themselves. And yeah I follow Janja and made a comment on one of her posts. Someone asked me for more info bc they are going through something similar so I dropped the name, and Janja commented saying something like "I am very familiar with that group". It's nice to have the acknowledgement of an expert, as a member of the local community.
Good for you that you're not on social media T. and as a citizen of the town of Carbondale, thank you Roland. Your added voice will make a difference.
Thank you T. I hate that that person came in your safe space. Hugs. Thanks for the wisdom. It's OK to be in process, it's OK not to have the answers.
Amazing, powerful and brilliant!
I love this!
I watched your vlog again about the 5K and I feel very moved again by your honesty and bravery. I hope our civic leaders make it unpleasant, difficult and impossible for the community to continue to grow here in Carbondale, preying upon the student population.
Thanks for the update T. I think its good that you focus on other things-it doesn't mean you're giving up the fight. And I DO hope that all of those ex-members know that there are people out here that will support them. I DO think more voices really need to come forward in order for there to be real change, especially in terms of the city/chamber and who they support. Something I'm sure is going to shift, or probably IS shifting because yeah, a bunch of 70 year olds can't run a restaurant forever. Maybe they will retire to Florida or ?
Very moving. Thank you for sharing these voices and experiences.
I owned a tattoo shop for a couple years, on Main Street, spitting distance from the LBC, which I assume you are also talking about as the Family’s front group. I had some experience with cults in the early 70s so when I heard the stories, my ears always perked up. There was a “robotic vibe” in that place that I couldn’t believe the academics enjoying their soy milk and vegan croissants , didn’t feel the same way, yet they seemed oblivious ….. I’m also a therapist who sold his practice after 30 years to express my self in a different way and though a critical thinker I initially found the scene scary, darkly humorous and usually a long wait for average coffee. PUNCHLINE: one evening while closing the shop , a very delirious woman came into the parking lot asking us if we knew about the Farm. She was scared and in the act of escaping though awkwardly using sexual gestures and suggestions to encourage us to help her. ( I’m trying to be tasteful). She was obviously conditioned. I ended up taking her to a woman’s shelter. But it confirmed all the rumors and vibes over the years. Very nice video.
Wow. Thank you for that creepy story. Geesh. I haven't heard anything about that. Thank you for chiming in.
Visited the farm during a solar tour. I thought there was something odd going on. Couldn't put my finger on it. When i asked who lived there the answers were evasive.
yes, they won't answer anything directly. you have good instincts.
I met Dean in '91 or '92 in NYC and could tell even back then that he was a narcissist, preparing to build a community of people who would submit themselves to him.
yes, precisely
I met this leader in '91 or '92 in NYC, before he moved his operation to Carbondale, and could tell right away that he was a narcissist ready to invite people to submit themselves to him. His own teacher was problematic, as well.
I used to be part of Deyami when I was a little girl and the guru always weirded me out. Even when I was 6 something about him felt off. I didn’t really know how to verbalize it then but I understand now that he was extremely narcissistic and detrimental to those who fallow him. Glad my family left when we did.
I am so glad you got out! It's amazing that you felt weirded out so young. Reach out if you want to talk more. T
Peace, Love and Light to you.
