College of the Holy Cross
Registrace 11. 11. 2008
Established in 1843, the College of the Holy Cross is an exclusively undergraduate liberal arts college that embraces a Catholic, Jesuit identity
CrossTalks Episode 3: Carolyn Risoli ‘86
Carolyn asks the audience the same question the interviewer from her first job out of college asked her, “History Major? What are you going to do with that?” Drawing parallels between historical analysis and business strategy, Carolyn highlights the importance of learning to “think critically, speak persuasively, and write effectively” as well as developing pattern recognition as a means to predict consumer behavior. She encourages students not to focus solely on job-specific skills but to embrace the broader perspective and adaptable mindset fostered by liberal arts education, which equips them to thrive in an ever-changing world. She closes with “So what can you do as a history major? Pretty much whatever the future throws at us.”
Carolyn Risoli ’86, a history major at Holy Cross, is a fashion and luxury industry executive with over 30 years of experience. She is a seasoned veteran and pioneer. Carolyn has led companies such as Marc By Marc Jacobs, Liz Claiborne, and Dana Buchman, growing their global reach across price points. Later, she worked for the parent firm LVMH where she identified young design talent. Since then, she has co-founded a sustainable luxury performance brand with Hilary Swank, consulted with apparel firms specializing in emerging and sustainable brands, and sat on the boards of apparel companies, including Nic and Zoe.
CrossTalks are offered by the Ciocca Center for Business, Ethics, and Society at the College of the Holy Cross.

This was a wonderful and elegant speech/revelation (no surprise!). Sending on to my adult children who I believe will be inspired:)
Awesome Julie Halpin class of 1984! Goosebumps just listening to your inspirational talk at HC!!
Ok
Hi
1:16:07 I found my brother!!!
47:18 I found the part where they messed up 😂
I was not expecting any Latin at a Jesuit College Mass so I am not disappointed but at least the mass was offered reverently.
Why is it necessary to have these young singers in the sanctuary?
The attempts to cover up, or discredit, the 'messiness' of history is an attempt by a minority of people to muddy the waters, confuse the populace and thereby insert their OWN reality and impose it on the rest of us.
It seems very odd to me that Richardson mentions the 1776 project, a very brief effort of the Trump administration, but does not mention the much larger effort that caused it, that is, the 1619 project. She does allude to it and, correctly in my view, criticizes it.
Thank you for this informative, receptive, congenial discussion.
Lungo drom...Congrats dear composer of good music. R.Y Gawlick
William F Buckley was preaching in the 50's. Boy, has it taken a LONG time to Push Back!!
I see healing of our Country's collective mental health by bringing back an emphasis on Liberal Arts and The Humanities!!!!
We are fortunate to live in this time with Heather Cox Richardson! She asked..."Are you still with me?"...My answer is: I hung on every word and took notes!❤
I believe, when it comes to working class families, the parents have to talk to the children as well as set an example to instill the types of values that will lead the children to success. By the time the children are teens, aka "grown", they should have friends that reflect the values the parents exemplified just a few years prior.
Glad to have this pop up on my CZcams notifications. My college humanities class had me questioning much of the values i grew up with but opened up so much more of how different cultures viewed their worlds. This is another thought provoking session with HCR. Thanks for shari ng!

Kalif Raymond been balling out for y'all!!
Wonderful History. Great effort to be made. Sincerely hope it works. HOWEVER--- does no one see the IRONY of a Religion, based on Imaginary Invisible Being proclaiming TRUTH? As an Atheist, I am all for the search for accuracy... But surely someone must see the folly in a Catholic Church spearheading it?
So glad that you brought Professor Lipton to speak to your students.
NEVER FORGET
Apple going to the government to change the patent laws is not "shareholder primacy." It is corporatism which is the antithesis of a free, competitive market.

If the US civil rights movement is the causal factor, why did the same process happen in other countries, sometimes before it did in the USA?
A small correction to the remarks of President Rougeau who stated (around 25:25) that all the religious orders in Louisiana owned slaves. That is not so. Redemptorists, for instance, had ministered in New Orleans since 1842. They never owned slaves, nor is there evidence that they were ever employed to work on their campus in the Irish Channel. The record of enslavement by other religious, however, cannot be denied.

6:54 “Misogyny is about what girls and women face, not what men feel” ❤
I was taught by a Catholic nun in 2nd grade, Sr. Nativa in 1958-59 at St Ignatius Catholic Grade School, Cleveland, Ohio. As I recall, her order was Sr of St Joseph (not sure of which order of St Joseph). She was still alive as of about the year 2000, and was still very active, even having a radio program in the city. I went to see her at that time. Thinking back on it, I didn’t think much about her being black at the time, but as an adult I realize that it was unique. Whether she was the youngest daughter of the Thomas family of Akron you mention by the name of Josephine I’m not sure. If you see this comment and are able to reply, it would be appreciated. (I now live in Minneapolis, MN, but have family in the Cleveland area.)
