Lee, I don’t know if this gets mentioned much, but a lot of players play the 2 draw whole-step bend routinely to its maximum extent…which is actually tonally flat relative to the whole tone decrease. It sounds ok sometimes (like when slamming the end a tune in cross position on the 7th) but really not always. What really alerted me to this issue of the max 2 draw being flat was when trying to play Little Walter’s instrumental That’s It. It’s in 3rd position and the second note of the tune is a held 2 draw whole step bend. If you play this bend to its maximum extent, it really sounds awful because it is flat. Walter plays it hard but hovers at the correct pitch slightly above its maximum point (much harder to do). In the end, one’s ear is the only real guide when bending, although knowing in your head ahead of time the *relative* pitches of 1, b3, 3, 5th is also very useful. Just putting this out there for the possible benefit of others, I know you know this stuff inside out!

Hi Lee, really enjoying your tongue blocking course and making good progress so thanks very much for posting it. I’m just a bit unclear on one thing. As we are now moving down to holes 2 & 3, are we now switching our tongue to the other side of the hole we are playing ? Many thanks.

So here I am back at it 2 years after first watching this tutorial. I've practiced some basic chugging and learned tongue blocking in the meantime. I had to give up back then but I now finally got it. I've been gaining an interest in Bluegrass and Country blues this past little while so this is just what I needed. Would you consider mapping the song by Wayne Raney called Lost John Boogie? It is a great chugging song but also sounds deceptively simple: czcams.com/video/0pNQFCn6WZQ/video.html

These podcasts are great. Really like the content and delivery. If I could share some feedback, you have a habit of stacking questions… There’s no need to ask and then clarify what you’re asking in 5 different ways, only to then circle right back to asking the exact same question before you let Joe answer. Sometimes it was tough to follow.

Thanks for the post. I see you are playing the harp back to front and holding it with the opposite hand than everyone else I've come across. I picked up a harp and started just like that because I didn't know different and there is no way I can change now . I wondered if this would hold me back but after seeing you I realise it's not the grip that will hold me back, just my lack of skill and practice.

Never knew it was so tricky to play the harp . I just picked it up & managed to play along with Little Walter & Sonny Boy 2 - actually not much about Rice Miller who is porhaps the grooviest & wrote the best songs .
