Wireless Servo Steering for Trolling Motors
In this video, I review the upgrades made to the BC Products Trolling Motor Servo Kit for Kayak or Boat. This video illustrates an added speed controller option that adjusts the servo motor speed for optimum use. The installation procedure of the kit is the same as explained in a prior video (see link below). This is a great product that I recommend for those unable to construct their own or searching for a professional appearance.

    love your content. 3 questions 1. the ESC listed on amazon is for 6V..I assuming you're using a 12V battery? 2. assuming counter clockwise prop rotation is forward thrust some of your test seem backwards..ie. for 90 degrees (to your right the R motor has forward thrust which would turn the vessel to the left? but when you test test 0 or forward you did have count clockwise motion (forward) but only on the L motor which which turn the vessel to the right? 3. these ESC are for brushed motors. I was under the impression that most trolling motors are brushless and when using a brushed motor controller for this it tends to burn up the controller?

      Thanks Howard. In reference to your questions... 1. Yes a 12V battery 2. Without going into all the rotation info, the actual field test performed as expected. 3. Most trolling motors are brushed. There are also brushless ESCs.

    Since the Hobbywing 880 ESC is overkill for a single brushed 40 amp motor, why not use the Radiolink Cool 9030 90A Bushed ESC. It's $5 cheaper and offers programming using jumpers instead of a programming card. That's another $10 saving. It also offers a 5amp 7.5 volt BEC. So you can simplify your wiring and save another $29. I just ordered the HotRC DS-600 Wireless Controller, so I don't know much about it. But isn't there a way to program the controller to vary the servo speed? If so, that would save another $32 and simplify the wiring. All my RC airplane controllers allow me to program speeds of my servos. Hope these comments are useful and looking forward to your thoughts.

    • @Aksmaniyak
      @Aksmaniyak Před 6 dny

      I'm sure that there are less expensive alternatives but the 880 ESC has a proven track record. The 880 has more useful programming options that I have used. The 880 also powers 2 motors which I have used in several projects. The HOTRC only varies the speed with incremental joystick moves.

    Excellent stuff mate, cheers. I have a 5 forward speed/3 reverse speed motor that Im just about to add a PWM to. Im using it on a float tube and the motor is mounted at the rear. The way the motor/prop is situated puts it under my float tube instead of away from it. In other words, I have to turn it around to propel me backward in the tube (going forward in the tube soaks my nuts haha). Anyway, when you put a PWM on my motor (older Endura 30), will it run at the same speed forward and backward? Im not sure if the reverse is limited in speed compared to forward. 5 speeds vs 3 made me wonder if full speed at reverse 3 is the same as full speed forward 5. Id really like to get the prop out from under me arse, the shaft isnt the longest and sometimes when its choppy I can feel the props brush the bottom of my tube which is not very good at all.

    Great vid. I purchased the same breaker that you have. I set it on on a test bench with my trolling motor ( minn kota 45 lb thrust) at full speed it only shows it’s pulling 2.9 amps. Also the motor is not submerged in water like yours. Is it something wrong with my breaker?

      @Aksmaniyak Před 25 dny

      Thanks. No, a trolling motor usually pulls about 3A at full throttle without a load (in air).

    No hobbywing 880 this time?

    • @Aksmaniyak
      @Aksmaniyak Před 26 dny

      I don't recommend using the 880 on trolling motors 50lbs or above. Since this was a 45lber, I thought this new high amp PWM would work better.

    I bet it is going to go super fast if you put in on full throttle... and wow.. you can stand on such a narrow kayak...

    Thank you. I looking at one of these. Can anyone explain why the autoboat system is like 5 times more money?? And how far away does it work, or the range??

    • @Aksmaniyak
      @Aksmaniyak Před 27 dny

      This set up uses the steering motor already installed on the MK. This also does not have spot lock like the autoboat. The two are not really comparable.

    Thank you for the video, it's great as always! Two questions: 1. I've read in some review that the lowest speed of this stepless motor is too high. What can you say about that? Can you set it at a very low rpm? 2. How about using a linear pot with a middle detent? What value pot would that be? Thanks!

    • @Aksmaniyak
      @Aksmaniyak Před 28 dny

      Thank you Andrei. I have found the lowest speed to be fine for a kayak. You could use a 10k pot with a center detent but you would need to adjust the knob for the different "0" point on the Haswing. You also need to add two 1k resistors. I did this in another video.

    I'm still hacking away. I see you've used those 880 ESC on a few projects for a while. How's it holding up long term and under load? Have you had a chance to run it hard for a long time in any of your other projects? I'm really amped about it and looking forward to wringing it out. Just looks a little physically small for the job. I'm really hoping you'll tell me its fine. BTW: I found a "new" building material for brackets, boxes etc. PVC sheet created by splitting and flattening PVC pipe with a heat gun. Easy to work and strong enuf. czcams.com/video/wLZVM4r1n9c/video.htmlsi=7EY9hcXdbQvm8wWR

      Hi Wali. The 880 holds up well with trolling motors under 50lbs thrust. Anything larger can cause the wiring to fry. That is why I tried the 100A PWM in my MK 45lb project. For all of the cost and labor involved with the PVC sheet project, I would go with the superior poly cutting board methods.

      Great! I’m running a motorguide 30 so that should be fine. I’m planning to mount everything inside the trolling motor head. Definitely running the cooling fans and I think I’ll cut some vent slots. I spray everything with corrosionX. Although it works magic for waterproofing, I’m pretty sure it hinders cooling. I like cutting boards as materials. Although they beat the flattened PVC in terms of initial labor, it’s hard to beat in cost (free scrap and leftovers). PVC also forms easily with heat. Made some flush mount trailer light brackets with it and I’m pretty tickled. Gonna give it a shot as the first section of a tiller extension on my 6 hp outboard. I going to try molding it around the tiller and pvc extension to give me some place to mount the shifter, kill switch and cord. See any holes/improvements for that idea? Thanks! Wali
