A friend of mine who is a pretty average kickboxer had his full contact kickboxing debut against a heavy handed ex-boxer : he won by accumulating 'points' through the front kick and his opponent gave up due to fatigue. His opponent often gets the better of his sparring partners (I've sparred both) so it was surprising to see an average kickboxer defeat him

I agree with you: The kick moves in a way that resembles that of, say, a yo-yo cast forward into the air, then yanked back into the hand. I love seeing crescent kicks, partly because it takes such strong abs and hips to do one with great speed. You probably know of the famous scene from the movie, "Billy Jack." The movie sucks, but Tom Laughlin pulls off a beautiful slo-mo outside crescent kick against an opponent who's about two feet in front of him. The best part of the scene? Laughlin tells the guy what he's going to do, and how he's going to do it. He also tells him that he'll have no way to stop it. If you've not seen the clip, it's worth the look. I secretly hope this kick can be useful, but I also hope that no one wants to use it lol. I think it is the single most powerful attack that the human body can perform, with no exaggeration. It also looks beautiful It's not just momentum, but being airborne also means that you don't have to balance any weight on a supporting foot, allowing you to concentrate 100% of your mass around one point of contact. A flying non-lead foot also gives you more range of motion One thing I want to mention are that this kick (possibly) *tends* to be slow. Compared to say a spinning back kick. Another thing is coordination/timing. You notice that werdum's kick is almost fully extended when it lands, so it's not generating the most amount of power it can. These are the 2 things that IMO can prevent it from knocking someone out I don't think a run up is necessary, but you will need enough distance to go from a leading left foot to kicking with a right foot, or vice versa. The foot you kick with is probably the one that will be your new lead foot I think the best place to kick is probably not the head, but the shoulder or lower ribs/solar plexus. Or anything that is rigid and leaves little wiggle room for movement, as that's where it will hurt like a b*tch or completely throw off balance. Imo it is best to have the non striking leg bent for the reasons you mentioned, but also because there is very little it can do while airborne. Imo Pfereira was already off balance when he threw that kick, and nothing would've saved the landing 100% without stumbling. Also, you have more range of motion and it looks elegant. The important thing is to train yourself to land. Bruce Lee is cited to have not liked kicking above the belt, and didn't like flashy flying kicks either, but he used them in his movies, especially in his earlier ones (Big Boss, Fist of Fury). I am a small guy, who is also arguably weak and not very flexible. But the amount of power this kick generates is amazing. Which is why it's one of my favourites I am an uneducated layman though so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I overanalyzed this too much

Man I used to be a fucking master of the twist kick. It was by far my fastest kick because of the motion of turning the hip over twice like cracking a whip. I should get back into martial arts, im so out of shape!
