    I saw Wicked in Melbourne last night, and while I loved it something was bothering me about Fiyero and his place in the show, especially while watching the finale. You perfectly unpacked it in the first half of part 1. Everything his and Elphaba's dynamic does Glinda and Elphaba do far better. On top of that, he does little else in the second act except drive a wedge between the witches and bail Elphaba out multiple times and it felt... Lazy. His whole emotional arc from the interval onward is "I love Elphaba" and that's it. We don't even get to see how he feels about joining Boq and the mob during the Witch Hunt number, he's not even mentioned despite the fact he should be there as per the source material.

      Yeah, I feel your frustration. Like, sure, I get that you kinda want to keep Fiyero's motivations hidden because it would bring the momentum you get from NGD onwards to such a grinding halt. But still, his motivations are so clearly "I'm playing double agent bc I love Elphaba". And it's so boring and LAZY and UGH!!! Glinda and Elphaba deserved to kiss and Fiyero just deserved better and borh can be pretty easily fixed which makes it all the more frustrating. 😅

    I find it fascinating that every time I come across a story of sisterhood people insist on turning it into a story of lust. Perhaps the 'lonliness epidemic' wouldn't be so drastic if we'd all quit sexualizing everything as if ejaculation is the only 'feeling' we're allowed to have since most of humanity is more than the sum of their erogenous zones.

Perhaps reflect on why you think gay equals lust before showing your ass this much in the comment section. Hilariously enough, I don't even care about sex, because I am asexual. The Wizard (Oscar Diggs, Elphie's ashamed charlatan of a father) never dies. He leaves dejected via hot air balloon. Remember, in the end, *WICKED* ultimately STILL has to abide by *THE WIZARD OF OZ* plotline that it's inherently based on, which means Elphie HAS to die (in the musical, she ONLY fakes her death in the musical strictly to send viewing audiences home happy with a bittersweet ending, whereas the 1995 novel leaves both her & Fiyero OFFICIALLY DEAD FOR REAL, Glinda stuck in a loveless marriage to boring dullard Lord Chuffrey, Liir [Fiyeraba's bastard bisexual lovechild, husband of coven nursemaid Candle & the biological father of Elphie's green-tinted grandchild, who is - rather appropriately, yet also albeit ironically - named Raine, a kind of heart-wrenching choice of name, considering what happened to Elphie herself at Kiamo Ko, which had once been the noble castle of the Vinkus/Winkie country before Fiyero's own supposed kinsmen became resentful of Elphaba's presence & secretly wanted her disposed of, with them conveniently being referred to as The Gale Force in hindsight, although the forthcoming movie adaptation of *WICKED* has them actually taking up this moniker before Dorothy even shows up in a bit of delightful foreshadowing] on his own journey of self-discovery, and the Scarecrow [whom, bearing in mind, is unequivocally NOT Fiyero in the 1995 novel, that's just Elphie's delusional mind breaking down, effectively making her CANONICAL melting something of a Mercy Kill accidently done by displaced child outsider Dorothy Gale] giving up his seat of power in The Emerald City temporarily to Glinda, who - if the _Wicked Years_ were ever rendered legit canon to L. Frank Baum's fantasy world - abdicates it to recovered lost Princess OZma, who ends up becoming "close friends" with a returned Dorothy once the former Kansas farmgirl permanently relocates to OZ "for good"; Indeed, although her Aunt Em & Uncle Henry live out the remainder of their lives on a farming homestead located just outside the gates of The Emerald City, Dorothy holds her residency within the palace itself & is actually the ONLY one given a MASTER KEY to OZma's PRIVATE CHAMBERS [Make of that what you wish folks & don't forget to purchase your "Friends of Dorothy" or "Friends of Elphaba" corresponding LGBTQ+ merchandise]). Conversely, as a result of losing the two people she truly loved the most, Glinda is left forever alone, tearfully wondering what might've been ("Although that doesn't shatter the ache we feel when reality sets back in", as stated plainly by the _I'm Not That Girl_ reprise) & resigning herself to looking after Liir as well as Raine from afar like a fairy godmother of sorts.

      @@TherealRNOwwfpooh In the books doesn't Glinda believe Elphaba to be alive even when it's proven that Elphaba is dead?

    • @TherealRNOwwfpooh
      @TherealRNOwwfpooh Před 3 měsíci

      @@poppyfan2842No. In the musical, following the public announcement of The Wicked Witch of the West's liquidation (cue "Ding Dong, Emerald City" aka "The Triumphant Return" from the 1939 MGM film's full soundtrack married to the "No One Mourns the Wicked Reprise" aka "The Finale"), Glinda genuinely believes Elphie's dead, even though our beautifully tragic misunderstood protagonist is faking her demise (mind you, Elphie faking her death is only done strictly to send theatergoers home happy with a bittersweet happy ending instead of the legitimately sad one that's featured in the 1995 novel & is basically the opposing other side to the official lore of the original _Wizard of OZ_ fairytale). Yet, Scarecrow! Fiyero (a musical & possibly film adaptation exclusive, as it's strictly non-canon in the 1995 novel) reminds Elphaba that, in order for positive change/eventual progress to happen that benefits everyone long-term, the rest of OZ has to believe The Wicked Witch of the West is actually dead. This is also means neither of them can ever notify Glinda that they're still alive, even though they're the only two people Glinda ever truly loved the most (in a better world, the best-case scenario would've been for all three of them to form a romantic thruple & exit OZ all together, but of course, as we know, this isn't a better world & Glinda has to live her life alone without the two people she's ever truly felt any inclination for whatsoever). Compare this to the 1995 novel, because in that source material, both Fiyero & Elphie are CANONICALLY dead (Fiyero is killed by the Ozian military that serves the current corrupt regime & Elphie genuinely melts FOR REAL due to her severe water allergy [for those wondering how she keeps clean, she bathes in an oily paste, which is a justified water substitute]). They don't ever come back in any of the other _Wicked Years_ stories. Glinda's stuck in a loveless marriage to a boring dullard, for all intents & purposes, effectively resigning herself to wistfully looking after Liir (Fiyeraba bastard bisexual lovechild) & later Raine (Liir & his coven nursemaid wife Candle's green-tinted daughter, who is ironically but appropriately named) from afar like a literal fairy godmother.

      @@TherealRNOwwfpooh ok, thankyou. I know Elphaba and Ferora are alive in the play and died in the book. I just remembered reading somewhere that in the books, the 3 were close but also in a love triangle with Elphaba in the middle. Then Ferora and Elphaba ended up dying, which lead to Glinda going crazy and believing her friends to be alive, which ends up getting her locked up. I also read online that Elphaba was friends with Boq. I've never read the books though, as I don't have a good attention span so I can only read comics due to my lack of attention span.

    • @TherealRNOwwfpooh
      @TherealRNOwwfpooh Před 3 měsíci

      @@poppyfan2842 Therein lies another difference between the book & the musical. In the musical, Boq becomes the Tin Man due to heartbroken, jealous Nessa shrinking Boq's heart (this following after the fact that Boq informs her that he's leaving her now that she has the magicked footwear to help her walk unassisted, which allows him to seek out Glinda's affection once again, even if Glinda wants nothing to do with Boq romantically, as she only truly loves Fiyero & Elphie) before The Wicked Witch of the East pleads with her summoned sister -- who unironically comes out of Nessa's closet once summoned -- to somehow spare Boq's life despite her grave mistake (meaning, despite Boq outright telling her that he's leaving her, Nessa realized all too late that she still loved Boq regardless, so she implores Elphie to keep Boq alive by any means necessary), which results in Boq's life being spared by turning him into the Tin Man without a heart. As to be expected, Boq doesn't take the whole situation well & promptly disavows his friendship with Nessa & Elphie after that going forward ("This is more than just a service to The Wizard, I've a personal score to settle with Elph...with the Witch! It's due to her I'm made of tin. Her spell made this occur, so for once I'll be glad I'm heartless. I'll be heartless killing her!" ~Tin Man! Boq from _March of the Witch Hunters_ [the song that starts after The Wizard orders the quintet -- and Toto, too -- to get rid of The Wicked Witch of the West & return forthwith with her broomstick in their possession]). Compare this to the 1995 novel, because in that, in accordance to the original _Wizard of OZ_ lore, Boq remains a Munchkin (he still simps for G[a]linda however, who politely rebukes his advances, with Boq quietly disappearing from the story altogether following the OZDust Ballroom dance party, at least until Dorothy visits his house, but after that small reappearance, he's gone from the rest of the story completely). In fact, Boq is the particular Munchkin at whose house Dorothy lodges at during the first night of her journey down the Yellow Brick Road & in whose cornfield the brainless Scarecrow is discovered hanging listlessly on his tentpole. Meanwhile, as for the Tin Woodsman, his real name in classic OZ lore (and also the 1995 _Wicked_ novel) is Nick Chopper & his backstory is a tragic one. In contrast to just being stuck in a rusty position for a year following a rainstorm as he was chopping a tree outside of his cottage (his truncated backstory from the 1939 MGM film), once upon a time, Nick Chopper used to be a human woodcutter, who charmed a Munchkin maiden named Aimee. However, Aimee was unfortunately under the guardianship of an overbearing & domineering parental figure (think Cinderella's mean stepmother Lady Tremaine, for a comparable example) who didn't want her daughter to go off & marry Nick Chopper, because it meant the old nag would have nobody to boss around once Aimee were to leave. So, the old bat (not literally) conspired with The Wicked Witch of the East to enchant Nick Chopper's axe so that it would decapitate a part of him each time he raised it, with the old biddy thinking that with her love cut up into pieces, Aimee would have no choice but to remain in servitude forever. Unfortunately for our aspiring couple-to-be, this kind-of still happened in a roundabout way, regardless. However, in a strange twist of fate, what neither Aimee's cruel guardian nor The Wicked Witch of the East accounted for was Nick Chopper's friendship with a local tinsmith, who would fashion a new specific body part for him each time he lost one to his enchanted axe (How he survived getting beheaded & getting a tin head to replace his real one is never explained, nor should it, because that particular part of the Tin Woodsman's origin is illogical fantasy tale nonsense, considering you need your brain & heart to function as a living being, whereas replacing the rest of him could be easily likened to getting prosthetic limbs after amputation). The problem was, the tinsmith may have been able to give Nick Chopper a new head, new torso, new arms & new legs all made out of tin, but what he could never give him was the heart he had lost upon becoming the Tin Woodsman, so when he was fully rebuilt entirely out of tin, the former Nick Chopper could no longer feel love for Aimee, because he no longer had his physical heart anymore. What this boiled down to was that Aimee was sadly stuck serving her cruel guardian & never even earnestly knew about her lover's plight, so she spent the rest of her life thinking the man she once loved had led her on before swiftly abandoning her, meanwhile the Tin Woodsman was left lonely & forelorn by himself in the very cottage he had previously built as a human for himself & Aimee to move into once they were to be married. He was cutting trees to have some firewood prepared for the cottage stove when the sudden rainstorm hit & rusted his tin joints for an entire year, right up until Dorothy & the Scarecrow stumbled across him after escaping the accursed talking apple trees.

    Loved this watching in 2024. I saw Wicked in London in 2022 the Fiyero was a black man and was there in 2023 when I saw it again. The Glinda and Elphaba in 2023 were black women. Yes, it was beautiful that all three principal characters were black. Yet, going off your comment we need to move past the casting “We casted the first ____ minority” Broadway and even national tour theater is very expensive here because it is so expensive to put on a show. Wicked was $14M to make so to recoup you can see why. Phantom of the Opera closed in 2023 because they couldn’t afford the royalties anymore. It is cheaper for me to watch theater in London. In 2022 & 2023 what I paid to see Wicked with the exchange rate third row both performances was less then what I just paid to see it on Broadway in February same row. It’s frustrating how expensive theater is here in the states.

      Nope, definitely not cancelled. I just needed to do something differently creatively for a bit. This year will be full-steam ahead with WQ Act II. Please have patience. I have to create *everything* by myself in my spare time, while working a 9-5.

    Reprising "What Is This Feeling" but with "Loving" after Elphaba and Glinda realize they're in love would have been God tier

    I have a love/hate relationship with my hearing aids. I can follow conversations easier, but they are so painful lol every chance I get I take them out. They are itchy, and I cannot imagine how Hawkeye has them in 24/7 without consequences.

      This is an excellent addition I hadn't even thought of!! The mundane reality of hearing aids. Thanks for sharing. ☺

    This made me laugh, cry, jump up and down for joy, cringe(bc of maguire’s writing), and feel very seen. Wicked has hit very different as a trans person especially reading the book. While it has been difficult listening to the audio book, your spark notes helped a ton for me to understand it. So thank you for the entertainment, brilliant views on needed equity in theatre and the entire level of queerness not noted enough throughout all of the Oz universe stories. I knew this show was a favorite of mine for many reasons before I knew so much about me. Thank you for this ⚡️ time to let the new hyper-fixation begin 😅 💚💖

    At 26:18 - 26:40 this is said "This includes the magical f-ing hand touches! Their first meeting? Hand touch. Glinda's apology? Touch. Their reconciliation? Hand touch. Hand touch. Hand touch. Hug. Hand touch. Cowering behind your girlfriend. Hand touch. Hug! Hand. Touch. The notable absence of the hand touch." And let me tell you.... I laughed so hard that the people around me looked up and were like... Are you ok? I also might have more like laugh-cried.... Not to mention i played over that section like 50 time just repeatedly making myself fall over laughing... Great job on everything but especially that! 😂 Edit: "The first time elphaba comes on stage in act 2 she literally comes out out of a closet" that was funny but what really got me was 33:54 "I cant even make this sh-t up if i wanted to." I already knew that, that happens in Wicked but you pretty much summed it up perfectly! 😂 Edit: Also i can confirm as a Bisexual that at 52:45 -52:54 it is so freaking true... that was wayyyyy too on the nose. 😅

    great video! on the bit about the character in Hawkeye, I think they are drawing from an actual perspective some deaf people have. I'm not deaf myself, I'm purely drawing from The Sound of Metal (2019). In it the main character, Ruben losses his hearing and ends up being sent to a deaf/rehab community where he copes with both his newly found deafness. Being a drummer Ruben's main goal is to recover and be able to perform again, he'd be able to get implants with enough money. the head of the community however strongly objects to this because he is of the opinion that deafness isn't a handicap. From what I've seen this opinion isn't uncommon among disabled people, something similar to that point is often brought up whenever there's a new medical break through, some fearing it presents 'erasure' of their way of life. with that in mind its a little extra weird that a marvel villain has that opinion. anyway, i don't have a staunch opinion on the issue, seeing how im not deaf. I just kinda find it interesting!

      Yes, after recording that bit, I have definitely come across that argument as well. The reason I didn't re-record it or put a disclaimer, is because largely the argument still stands. I don't get the feeling that particular perspective of Deaf people and Deaf culture was what they wanted to portray with Maya. And if they did-it was very badly executed because she only makes one comment, smashes his hearing aids and well, first thing Clint and Kate do in the morning is... go to someone who can repair it. It is then completely dropped as a story beat, making me believe (as I argue in the video) they just wanted Maya to crush Clint's hearing aid so that they could have that scene with Clint's son calling him, which is pretty much the only scene in Hawkeye where we are immersed in the experience of being deaf/heard of hearing. And I get wanting to celebrate one's deafness! Being proud of your disability, because the world sees it as a _disability_ and not an _ability_ . Go forth! Absolutely! I can only applaud that. But there's a HUGE difference in my mind, between celebrating once Deafness, and bullying someone into "accepting" their deafness. I'm sorry, but that is not up to somebody else to decide... Clint was hearing for the majority of his life. Only through having experienced so much combat did he lose (some of) his hearing. Someone like Clint, is more likely to choose hearing aids or even cochlear implants if that option is available to him, because that's how he experienced life for 30 odd years. That's what he knows. And it might be hard to accept, but if the technology wasn't available to him... I don't think-realistically-someone like Clint would just do a 180 and completely immerse himself in Deaf culture. Someone like him probably wouldn't do anything at all. He'd just hear worse and therefore communicate worse and end up isolated from his surroundings. Someone like Maya, who was born Deaf, and had even a Deaf mother (as we see in Echo), obviously is going to use signing. In Echo we see basically her entire community was willing to learn ASL so they could talk to her! That's *huge*! And we see Clint sign to his son! He only knows minimal and basic signs, but he _has_ absorbed some ASL. He recognizes the position he/ his body is in and he's adjusting. Even with his hearing aids, he uses more sign language than he did before losing his hearing. Doesn't that count for something? Even I, while working on this video, picked up on some sign words and practiced signing.... ASL... Which is super weird, because if anything, shouldn't I be learning *Dutch* sign language?? That's where I live, after all. So representation does work, but we need to also be aware of localization in the process, and not all mindlessly copy whatever the Americans are doing. Sorry, this got ramble-y. 😆But all is to say, it is still bonkers to me that someone else can just "decide" how someone should feel about their own body and their own disability. Just because you haven't chosen that path, doesn't mean others aren't allowed to, or are "traitors" for doing so. They probably had their reasons why, just like Clint. And just because someone uses a hearing aid or cochlear implants, doesn't mean they can't or don't want to communicate through signing. It's a very black-and-white worldview, and rather counterproductive to such a complex-and personal!-topic.
