Bulldog Inverted Flight - NAILED IT FINALLY
After some sketchy attempts at holding inverted flight from a loop, we try a simple half roll with much better results......still needs to run a vacuum round the inside of that dust bucket.
This is a Scottish Aviation Bulldog - the basic trainer for the RAF from 50 years ago.
It is also the trainer I learned to fly in with the RAF in 1992.

Perhaps it is because the GPS unit is inside the plane, attached to my wrist? When I am straight and level I get good data. When I go inverted like Maverick, I lose GPS signal and the data goes to shit.

Complete FAIL inverted flight becomes inverted power-on STALL - Insta360 X3
zhlédnutí 52KPřed 4 měsíci
Tried to turn a loop into level inverted flight. Made the mistake of starting loop too slow and not leveling out fast enough. Did not see inverted clues to determine I was level and executed a full power-on inverted stall. Note the position of the elevator from the outside shot at full inverted stall. Next time I'll dive and roll inverted to make sure I have the speed. All good fun this!

Hi Mark, thanks for the great video. I admire your dedication to flying with your disability. I also owned a Bulldog here in Australia for many years then recently sold it back to a guy in UK who also has the same disability. Enjoy your Bulldog they’re a fun airplane to fly
What is spraying out of the landing gear strut?
It is fuel venting out of the overflow valve. Flying aeros with full tanks you can loose fuel. Although it looks more than it really is.
@@AirBobba Ok I thought it was a fuel vent, Thanks.
The wings are vibrate when return back level position after loop
It appears to look like the wing is shaking, but it is actually the stick with the camera on it starts vibrating. The software in the camera makes it look like the wing is vibrating.
@@AirBobba i thought designed was able to swing up/down to avoid crack, thanks anyway
@@herryrachmad333 The wings are fairly short and solid; there is very little flex visible when flying, even with high-G maneuvers.
@@AirBobba appreciate and thanks for the detail
I'm curious on the helmet that you are flying with?
It is an RAF Mk.4 helmet. I was issued with one of these when I trained with the RAF in the 90's. They can be bought on eBay.
what is that fluid comming out of the gearleg comming out of the loop.?
It is AvGas through the tank overflow valve. This makes flying aeros with a full tank more expensive than it needs to be....
Very poor, all the gear no idea. At least sort out those loose items floating around, jeez.
Trying to hold a 35 to 40 degree nose up attitude while inverted...... in a bulldog .... good luck with that!
Nothing against you personally, but who taught you aerobatics? So many, many issues. Get some real training please.
RAF instructors some 30 years ago. They only taught loops rolls and stall turns though. This was by far my worst error and I’m starting to regret sharing it since people think this is par for all my flights. Oh well. Appreciate the concern.
I see your in USA, I hope the wing spar NDTs are up to date especially for aeros. I owned a Bulldog here in OZ for many years. X-raying the spars and doubler plates are mandatory every 2 years. RAF sold them when they were close to their fatigue life hence the need to keep testing the spars now. Best of luck with your aeros, the Bulldog is the nicest and well balanced aircraft I have ever flown
I think one day soon we will read about your last mistake . It took me years to do the basics I can’t even see you doing many checks , speed , height , angle on nose , where your horizon is . I found it quite worrying even for another pilot to see this and it spread the wrong message . Good luck take lessons .
Wow… all the loose junk flying around. Full forward stick when inverted, and you don’t even know upright spin recovery. You’re setting yourself up for an inverted spin, and you think upright spins are disorienting?
You were stalling even before completing the loop; and you can clearly see the airplane wings shaking. Why didn’t just roll upside down instead of doing the loop?
Please find an instructor! You are risking getting into a flat spin doing these loops. Please be safe out there!
An accident statistic waiting to happen.
I’m already an accident statistic. I’m a paraplegic from a motorcycle racing incident in 2007. I am determined to show people that despite a life changing injury I am still very capable of making really bad decisions 👍🫶
How do you get the view from alongside?
It's a 360 camera on a stick, made by Insta360, X3.

Thank you, sincerely! Feel free to share this video with any sites you are on, I'm not very good at self-promotion lol. Mark
As a Nanchang CJ6a, basic aeros pilot, fantastic!
Oh they look great fun...!!! Very capable warbirds...one of these days I'd love to take a flight in one. Enjoy!
Good grief ...
It's one of my cutest models, from Airfix series 1 and looking just like this one. I Must have assembled it more than forty years ago! those were great times indeed. And what does many teens have nowadays? virtual aircraft, maybe? 🙁 At least mine is a real object.
ABSOLUTELY!!! I wish I could post pics, but despite owning a real Bulldog, I JUST made 2 models; one was an Airfix model from 1974, and the other is made by a company called KP. And guess what! The KP model includes an option for XX519 - my plane...! Having spent my youth making these, to finally own the actual plane that was used as a model is awesome and humbling. Thank you for your comment!
@@AirBobba That's incredible! 😀
please arrange with your relatives instructions on what to do with the crash footage....and please ensure your will is up to date; you are a disgrace
you are flying with the Queens / King's colours but are not flying as per the RAF regulations; why ?
only a few seconds of inverted flight is permitted. S.O.P.
You entered the loop too slow - should be 125 knots minimum. Also all those loose articles could foul the controls. Grounded
Superb! Although, you're just missing the MiG28, and you forgot the "finger", and Goose with a Polaroid to take a picture ;-) . Back in my ATC days, it was the Chipmunk that was used.
Hope you are good at incipient spin recoveries mate....
From memory - the Bulldog doesn’t have inverted oil, so there is a 10 second limit on inverted flight, purely from a ‘looking after the engine’ POV. We tended to avoid deliberately flying inverted for any length of time.
Actually, the Bulldog does have a Christen inverted oil system. The limiting factor is the fuel supply. After 15 seconds the fuel cannot make it to the engine and it starts to splutter.
that is correct; it's an oil system limitation not a fuel system limitation.
There are Old Pilots, and Bold Pilots........{ if you know the rest then there might be hope }...if you don't know the phrase...it's already too late
Pilot error is close at hand
Well, that's kinda the point..! You make it sound like this is a commercial flight with passengers. This is a trained pilot in his own plane at 8,000 ft with a helmet and parachute over sparsely populated areas, who is learning the limits of his and the plane's capabilities. As they say, "calm seas does not a good sailor make".
@@AirBobba ah, well I didn't know all that
Yet another YT´er on his way to kill him self in a plane to get a few likes extra. SO many faults/missing understanding of flying during this video alone. Watching RC pilots trash their expensive jets when they should be doing patterns on a high wing trainer is kind af tragic fun, this is just outright tragic. TNFlyGirl Jenny Blalock ½ year ago....
At least u have helmet.
Maneuver is called high speed (accelerated) stall with rudder. You stall it at Vs * 1.7 (ish) and add rudder once nearly inverted. P. S. You may well lose a lot if you don't get proper training for full aero!
The rudder is deliberate to start the inverted spin. Recovery is #dynamic
Can you do a high speed stall with rudder? .
No is the answer. A high speed stall relates to stalling the main wings. This can be done at any speed. An aero foil will stall at a specific angle of attack, regardless of the speed. However, this cannot be achieved using the rudder, since the rudder is 90' opposed to the plane of lift of the main wings, and as such, cannot affect the angle of attack of the wings. Good question.
I've flown a Bulldog several times. Inverted once.
Incipient flutter in the wing during the recovery? What speed were you doing at the end of the recovery? Or were you flying through your own wake turbulence?
Good question, and I don't know. It could just have been that the camera started vibrating on the end of the stick. When this happens the stabilization software makes the plane look steady, but the wing looks like it's shaking. In reality, it is just the x360 camera bouncing around on the end of the stick. You see this during landing too. That is most likely the effect we are seeing; it was not catching my own wake, I'm fairly certain.
Would you please fix seat belts of the right sit and clean the cockpit next time?
Already done, but yes.
PLEASE find a qualified aerobatic instructor. I have lost two dear friends who were trying to teach themselves aerobatics. That power on inverted stall could have easily led to a flat inverted spin. PLEASE?
Thank you. I am looking for a qualified aerobatic instructor. Although, not many around here who have flown Bulldogs. I'm not actually looking to do more than the basics I am currently flying (loops, rolls, stall-turns.....and that's it), and for those I am basically safe now. The only one I actually want to do that I will not do without an instructor is a spin and recovery. Did I mention I am a paraplegic, so another risk factor to add in right there....
@@AirBobba It's not the "basic" manoeuvres that are the issue. It's what they develop into when they are not well executed - the thing you are not keen on: spinning. Spinning can be really disorienting. Recovering an inverted spin, even more so. You seem like a sensible guy in the comments - I'd hate to see you taking a risk that you didn't realise you were taking, and that inverted power on stall could have easily developed into an inverted spin.
please try and follow the B.H.T. syllabus and contact an ex student ( presumably the instructors will be too old now ). I am concerned for your safety
Exactly, a flat inverted spin in a Bulldog is not recoverable. . . I owned a Bulldog for 12 years and still miss her
Nice Mark ! Greetings from the UK Bob Bailey friend of Tigerflight
Hi there Bob....!!!! Hope you're well!!!
Mate, sort your FOD out…
It's sorted.
How are you controlling the rudders?
I'm an incomplete paraplegic. I have enough control over my feet to steer a helicopter, but not enough to walk....
You are amazing. Good luck to you and fly safe.
Whatever happened to your HASSEL checks?
HASELL check performed before set of aeros, with abbreviated HELL check before each individual aero - edited out for brevity.
I see you just been doing your shopping it seems too ! :)
Sir, I’ve seen several of your videos and with all respect, to me it looks like you don’t really know what you are doing. You have had lessons you say here, but cutting power for a stall turn is exactly not the right thing to do. Doing a half loop with too little speed, trying to hold inverted flight at a something like 45 degree noise up angle in another video, also proves to me your training is clearly insufficient. Flying aerobatics is great fun and I really encourage people to do so, but please find a proper aerobatic instructor and don’t experiment while learning the basics.
Thanks for the comment. I am showing the first attempts (since these are the most interesting and get more views), and back then I did indeed lack some parts. I no longer cut power ST's and am now working on trying to slice the horizon in the same place. Safety is relative when learning something in an aircraft towards the edges of control/capability/pilot-ability.....but I am taking precautions to stay safe and not overstress the aircraft. Thanks again.
Very forgiving craft! I never enjoyed aerobatics myself. Loops are fun. Rolls, one or two ok at a time. Spin, one or two turns. Start getting into inverted, hated it. Feel like you need a better plane made for such. I was feeling bad for your airplane. LOL.
Not enough momentum.
Flew on XX711 a long time ago. A great wee plane.
I suppose the Bulldog could be fun to fly . . . if you can't get your hands on a Zlin 242-L. 😏
Zlin has 180hp, Bulldog has 200hp. But look very similar 👍👍
@@AirBobba My Z-242L has a Lycoming AEIO-360-A1B6. According to the Zlin AFM and the Lycoming operator manual it makes 200 HP at 2,700 RPM. That's the same engine as your airplane, no?
@@zlindriver7632 ah for sure, yes the same engine. I was going off a quick Wikipedia search. How you like flying the Zlin??? looks very similar
15 seconds doesn’t sound much, you’ll need all of that to establish that you are actually level, then you can note the attitude outside and on the AH. You might be surprised by the push force required! Another good check is that when you roll out you should be at the start altitude. You don’t need a head of steam for this, it just complicates things as you’ll be compensating for falling airspeed. Max continuous power st and level should do the trick. The slow roll is about the hardest basic Aresti figure to get right. To score you must start and end in level flight at the same altitude, so no pulling the nose up to start!
