BETTER TILES for my Dream Game | RANGER Devlog 11
zhlédnutí 618Před rokem
#ranger #gamedev #pixelart #gamedevelopment #indiegame #devlog #tiles #tilemap #unity In this devlog we create simplified tiles with lots of functionality. I hope this system will help make a much more "lived in" feeling to my game. I want the player to feel like the world is alive and I think adding Animation, Responsiveness and Variation to the tiles will do just that. Hope you enjoyed! Thank...
Creating DEPTH in my Dream Game | RANGER Devlog 10
zhlédnutí 7KPřed rokem
#ranger #gamedev #pixelart #gamedevelopment #indiegame #devlog In this devlog we create depth through scaling and positioning of the tilemaps, color of foreground and background tiles, and 2D lighting. This is the foundation for world building, so that's pretty exciting lol. These past 10 Devlogs have been awesome to make... looking forward to the next 10! ►► SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/@varigon...

Hey could you consider doing a tutorial for your smooth pixel perfect camera? I'm on the verge on migrating my whole project to GameMaker because the camera jitter is unbearable so this is a last hail mary for me.
Yeah I've been working on making a tutorial for it... But I'm currently moving so it'll be a little while before I can finish it
pretty crazy stuff! I imagine it would be pretty tricky to use for indie devs tho :0
I think the biggest learning curve is unreal engine itself but once indie devs understand the way the engine works I think these features are actually pretty simple to implement. I have to experiment with it but it seems pretty promising
Great video mate. Just a bit of constructive criticism, and this is solely my opinion so others might feel different, but when doing these more technical breakdowns of what youre doing, it might be better to lay out what you were trying to achieve overall at the beginning of the video then go into your process. Just each part of the video felt a bit disconnected for me personally with you jumping from one task to the next. But as I say Great work! Also In regards to your blinking animations, Have you looked into unity's animation events and blend trees? It looks like you've already figured how to solve your issue with the third party animator but unity does have built in functionality for the stuff your talking about; like syncing animations and making sure the player is in the correct position at the end of an animation before it loops back to the previous one. Could be handy to look into that before restricting yourself to using a 3rd part system 🤔 once again all just friendly suggestions - subbed amd looking forward to seeing your progress 😀
Thanks man! And thanks for the advice, you're right that I should explain the expectations better at the beginning. For the animation, I tried to look into it but I was having a hard time finding exactly what I needed. But since you mentioned it I'm going to look at it again and see if I missed something. Thanks again!
Neat progress :D
Thank you! Neat comment lol
You have great things going on this channel. +1 Sub!
Thank you, that means a lot!
Hmm wow yeah such cool
4:56 where did i left animation #8
Sorry, I don't understand. "Where did I left animations #8?"
@@VARIGONSTUDIOS its a joke
I love the work you've done with the jumps, adding the weight, the variable jump height etc. All in all, a great video for anyone thinking about working with 2D in Unity!
You're the best. Thanks!
I have a question nat, ur game will be able on mac?
I'll have to look into getting it on Mac but it should be available
Absolute gigachad moment
🖤
Hmm, instead of drawing with the lighting, why dont u draw with a solid color, then use normal maps (bc normal maps can draw lighting into your sprites + and it works with colored lighting too). Btw if u r gonna delete all shadows or lighting, instead, change that geometry to normal map (sorry for my english, if u dont understand, i have no idea, u can search yt i guess)
Thanks for your feedback! I am planning on using normal maps but for a different reason. Normal maps don't work that way because this is a 2D game. In 2D games, normal maps don't work because lighting in engine is different than 3D. So normal maps would not change the need for drawing with light. I'll be using normal maps for color mapping instead of light mapping
@@VARIGONSTUDIOS actually, it does, (idk if ur using unity but normal map will work with the East West North South direction (and between it) btw u can search on yt for "2d normal map " (i am using unity so ig there may be some problems if ur not (sorry, i dont watch streams much im kinda busy) But all i wanted to say is that normal maps work in 2d, u can see in "katana zero" game
@@VARIGONSTUDIOS btw check out the start of this video, this is how it work in 2d czcams.com/video/Yuwbj4Nvu_o/video.html
I'll keep looking into it. Thanks
The production value on this video is incredible. Please keep it up!
Thank you. I'll do my best
Amazing work! You're creating something truly special here.
Thank you so much!! I hope so

I love it!
@@VARIGONSTUDIOS inspiring really
You move the pointer too much making novices to lose you. Try practicing your presentations before they are finalized. Remember, beginners know almost nothing!
Thanks for the feedback
Nice video man!

why is it an orthographic camera
Good question. Originally I had a perspective camera but in the devlog before this one I go over how I need a pixel perfect camera. The only way to do that is to use orthographic. It just makes sure that everything is aligned to the same pixel grid
This video was great! The restrictions of the URP Pixel Camera have really started to bother me again recently. The camera is a bit too zoomed in for my liking, but the next level of zoom is way too much. Not to mention doing dynamic stuff like you mentioned. I'll definitely have to try this! If you're worried about performance, you could try shrinking the pixel camera to a smaller area around the actual camera. Whenever the main cam gets close to the edge, move the pixel cam by a set amount. My game is fairly large, so I'll try this and let you know how it works at scale
Thank you! That's a great suggestion, I'll have to try it. Since this video I have made some refinements to the Smooth Pixel Camera. I'll be talking about it a bit more in-depth in my next Devlog
@@VARIGONSTUDIOS Cool! I just subscribed!
I love how pedagogue you are in your devlogs. I've learned a lot of things, curious to see the future of your game !
Thank you so much!
yo, At first glance I thought your channel name was Virgin Studios. LOL🤣🤣Good video by the way. Love the editing.
Lol, thank you!
Incredible content! Congratulations!
Thank you so much!
Got a feeling this is gonna blow up
Thank you! I hope so lol
Just a suggestion, avoid using red borders in the thumbnail image. On YT home page it looked like I have already watched this video but I haven't 🙂.
Thanks for the suggestion. You're right, I didn't think of that lol
music?
I'll check what it's name is and let you know
The name of the song is Waltz - Major Warren from Artlist.io
So I've started with #10, since that's the one CZcams first recommended. This devlog has such polish and professionalism. It's really one of the worst parts of CZcams that so many views equates to so few people hitting that subscribe button to support great creators. Going back to check out your earlier videos.
Wow! You're so nice, thank you! Just trying to learn how to make great videos and development a cool game. I really appreciate your support!
I'm guessing you have already figured out/tried this, but if you are still struggling with jitter try putting the player and background movement in FixedUpdate instead of Update and multiply by Time.FixedDeltaTime instead of Time.DeltaTime.
Thanks for the suggestion! All of my movement is already in Fixed update but I figured out that cinemachine was in late update so changed that to fixed update and it's much smoother now
what software you use for animation?
I'm using Aseprite. It's great of Pixel art
It's free or paid?
Really like the style of the video! Keep up the good work.
I really appreciate that, thank you!
Thank you to everyone who's commenting, liking and subscribing! You guys are the best, I'm blown away that we've gained 100+ subscribers in just 5 days! Thank you for your support, it means a lot 🎮
cool man very underrated
Thank you!
I love any idea that invents something new in 2d / platformer games because we believe 2Ds repeat each other but then some unique game come out with interesting mecanics, physics or visual tricks. I miss times when Actionscript was popular, you could try many games and find unique ideas, some of them have parallax, some use ragdolls or dynamic muliplayer experience. And then it becomes addicting, keep revealing them, nice video
Thank you dude! That means a lot
I love depth a lot too, yours looks like a good start! in my game I've achieved pretty good depth and it's very satisfying~ Keep it up! :D
Thanks dude! Yeah I like the feeling of your YesterSol background
