Parallel/Series 4x12 Wiring Tutorial without Soldering
Download the wiring diagram here!
drive.google.com/file/d/1V7oojwya--0prlQ9CvaKk7npLKzrpNrO/view?usp=drive_link
I prefer solder connections but there's nothing wrong with doing it this way. Every major manufacturer uses crimp connections for their speaker wiring but every installation is only as good as it's installer. Take your time and make sure each connection is solid and your wiring job will last forever.
Beware of the goons claiming to have magical and superior tonal improvements from using 14AWG or 12AWG wire size. If anything, the added weight of the wire can attribute to premature stress failure of the joints. Keep in mind the wire size on the speaker itself and even the output transformer and output jack wiring on the amplifier can be as small as 20AWG or 22AWG. I typically will use 16AWG when wiring speaker cabinets and that is more than enough. Most major manufacturers use 18AWG wire in their speaker cabinets and that's fine too.
BTW, these Scumback BM-75 speakers sound AMAZING. If you've been trying to chase that sound of a lot of 70's and 80's hard rock then these are for you. They sound great for modern music too but I've never had much luck getting passable old school sounds from modern speakers.

      I'm not understanding your desired setup from the description. The two 8 ohm speakers can be wired in parallel for 4 ohms or in series for 16 ohms. The two 16 ohm speakers should only be wired in parallel for an 8 ohm load. Are you wanting to use both of them at the same time with the same amplifier? Some amplifiers can handle a slight mismatch but the downside in this case is the speakers won't draw equal current due to the impedance being different despite the amp seeing the overall load. Feel free to write me at brent@purgasound.com and I would be happy to share some more insight. Thanks for checking out the channel!

    Great, as always. I'd only add to pull on the crimped terminals after crimping. It is also important to never trust the work of others. I have a Fender open back 1x12 cab loaded with an EVM12L. When I plucked that speaker to put it in another cab, I found the speaker was connected with a single copper strand on one of the terminals. It was driven by a 150W tube amp for years. Also, crimped terminals out of the box can be loose fitting on the speaker lugs. Tightening the fit with small pair of pliers by squeezing the little metal rolls on each side of the female crimp terminal can be beneficial.

    What I do not understand is why are you spending the time to try to match an old valve with a new one? Would it not be better to just replace them with a new matched pair and be done with it? Give the customer back the old valves and at least one could be used as a spare in an emergency. If the customer is not willing to spend the money on valves, then maybe they should just get a Katana or an HX Stomp. Did I miss something, and you did put in a new matched pair?

    • @purgasound

      @@shane011471 Customer wanted to save some money. Sure, new matched pair would be great but I've had plenty of brand new tubes fail so it's never a "be done with it" situation. I would rather utilize stock than let them sit on a shelf. Just this month had a brand new EL34 arc when bench testing and another pair replated on their first operation. Next time a client brings me a tube amp I'll be sure to turn them away and tell them they should buy a Katana or whatever. lol cheers mate.

      @@purgasound My comment was not directed towards you in any way whatsoever. Yes, brand new valves fail from time to time as for a lack of a better term "Shit Happens." To just replace one valve makes no sense at all as they will age at different rates, how old is said valve? Just because it tests fine today does NOT mean it will test fine tomorrow. I do not care if the customer brings me the valves "I just do not warranty them" OR they purchase them from me as I do not care at all. I will NOT just replace one valve as it makes no damn sense to do so. How could you even argue this is beyond me TBH. Just like I will NOT do top side PCB repairs. If you are unwilling to spend the money to do the job correctly you can go someplace else. Once I take a repair in MY NAME is now on it and my name is more important than money. This has worked out well for me as there is NO point in doing any job half assed.

    Is it possible to change out transformers on a 100 watt amp to a lower wattage? I have a Marshall MGHDFX100 head, and 100 watts is just too much in a bedroom setting. Also, is it possible to mod it in a way to have switchable power levels like some of the newer 20 watt Marshall heads? The obvious answer is to buy a head at the wattage I'd prefer, but I have a soft spot for the old Marshall MGs.

    • @purgasound
      @purgasound Před 6 dny

      I'm not super familiar with the MG series circuit but they appear to get the output from a TDA7293 100W DMOS amplifier. There is too much going on with the circuit to just swap transformers. To reduce output power you can use a higher impedance load. They deliver maximum clean output power at 4 ohms. If you use an 8 or 16 ohm load you should see a reduction in output power. Cheers!
