    11 would be jūippon. Interestingly, my dialect seems to differ for some of these. We say nippon instead of nihon, and yonbon instead of yonhon.

    I've heard Japanese people use "san" with first names. Other Japanese teachers do so as well. So who's mistaken, you or them?

    Jukko?

    • @caseygreyson4178

    • @caseygreyson4178
      @caseygreyson4178 Před 8 dny

      @@LittleLulubeeno problem. Instead of remembering all the exceptions (like 1, 6, and 8), it’s easier to remember only one exception, 7. When a number is two syllables (1, 6, and 8), the counter will usually take the first half of the word and double the consonant. Thus, ichi becomes ikko instead of ichiko, roku becomes rokko instead of rokuko, and hachi becomes hakko instead of hachiko. Three syllables is considered too long. Of course, the one exception to this is 7, nanako. This rule applies to pretty much any counter. Take for example, hon(本): Ippon, roppon, happon, nanahon. I think it’s much simpler to just remember the general rule about sounds and know that 7 is the exception, rather than trying to remember that 1, 6, and 8 are the exceptions while the rest are normal.

  • @Verbalaesthet
    @Verbalaesthet Před 9 dny

    Counters are one of the most annoying things in Japan. I usually avoid them by using the neutral counter.

    • @caseygreyson4178
      @caseygreyson4178 Před 9 dny

      You do it all the time in English. A grain of sand/rice A sheet of paper/metal A cup/glass of water/milk If you really think counters are annoying, I wonder how you say these things in English…
