If the number of data is even then this rule does not apply. In that case for finding the 2nd quartile is to arrange them in ascending order and then the median (middle number for odd number of data, average of the middle numbers for even numbers of data) is the 2nd quartile. Divide the ordered data in two groups, and then median of the 1st group is 1st quartile, median of the 2nd group is 3rd quartile. Example 1 : Ordered data 2,2,3,4,5,5,6,7,7,8,9,9 . total number is 12 (even). median of this data set is (5+6)/2 = 5.5 which is the 2nd quartile. Dividing the data into 2 groups we get 1st group 2,2,3,4,5,5. Median is (3+4)/2 = 3.5 which is the 1st quartile and 2nd group 6,7,7,8,9,9 . Median is (7+8)/2 = 7.5 which is the 3rd quartile. Example 2: Ordered data 2,2,3,4,5,5,6,7,7,8,9,9,11,15 .......... 2nd quartile = (6+7)/2 = 6.5 1st group 2,2,3,4,5,5,6............Median or 1st quartile = 4 2nd group 7,7,8,9,9,11,15...........Median or 3rd quartile = 9

I’m @ middle school and we use waaaaaayy bigger numbers, and it’s a bit hard to understand this whole thing since you use small numbers.
