Cabaret & the Seductive Power of Evil
It’s 1971 in a filthy German nightclub, and Liza Minnelli is starting to think she’s made one of the worst mistakes of her life -- and she's not the only one. But what nobody realizes is that the weird little low-budget queer musical they're making would become the stuff of Hollywood legend. This is the story of Cabaret - the film that made icons out of its stars, transformed the very genre of movie musicals, influenced art and culture for decades to come from Chicago to Schitt’s Creek ... and served as a warning that’s as timely today as it was back then.

Can a Movie Change the Law?

The 1961 film VICTIM isn't just a tense thriller. It was crafted to serve as a stealthy challenge to a British law that criminalized the very existence of homosexuals. It was a law that many had tried - and failed - to overturn. But at the dawn of the swinging sixties, a new challenge emerged. VICTIM brought together an unlikely team of writers, producers, and a matinee idol named Dirk Bogarde ...

I was also in the SF Bay Area when Prop 8 was passed. God, that was awful. I had an icon of Fr. Mychal Judge &, heartbroken, I asked for his prayers & had the weirdest strong sense that things would be alright. It took a while, though. Now we have to fight again to ensure Trump & his SCOTUS don't undo all the progress.

Straight guy here, who came across your videos while doing some research on this movie and its legacy. An argument I’d make is that Nightmare 2 has a major influence nowadays: The entire Will Byers character storyline on Stranger Things is a big-budget remake of Nightmare 2, informed by the perspective of us looking back on the ‘80s from a time of much greater social equality (not to mention vast advances in preventing and treating HIV/AIDS). Will is an awkward, closeted teenage boy in the mid-‘80s, who is being haunted and terrorized by an evil spirit that wants to use his fears and self-loathing as a means to break out into the real world. He is afraid that this spirit haunting him is so dangerous, it will kill everyone around him, and that even asking anyone else for support would just put them bring them into his circle of danger. Does any of this sound familiar? They really ought to give Mark Patton a cameo in Season 5. There’d be no Will Byers if there hadn’t been a Jesse Walsh first - and the Hollywood of today is a much better place for Noah Schnapp, than things were for Patton back then.

This is so weird to me. I saw La Cage aux Folles as a young woman in the early 80s, and found The Birdcage many years later to be an inferior and mostly milktoast remake. To find it was a gay rights landmark is news to me, and rather tragic.

With all the current parallels with 1930s Germany in the US today, people saying the MAGA movement supported by a scary number of just lifelong Republicans like my mother, is all just fine, I'm overthinking it... I think I may watch Cabaret again now. Haven't seen it in ages and this analysis and history has me interested. And then I will likely have to follow it up with The Bird Cage or I might not sleep.

I've just realised I haven't seen the movie Cabaret in about 20 years, because I've been lucky enough to be able to see the stage show in multiple forms, and considered it better. I felt that it told the story of queerness and Nazi Germany better. Seeing this I've realised I was probably just too young when I first saw it, that I missed all the important bits, and I saw the stage show at just the right time. I really need to rewatch the movie again, I think I've been unfair! Looking forward to it!!

When my partner died in 2005 (well before marriage was legal), he left behind a house, a car, a pension settlement, CDs in the bank, and more. But his estranged sister was his next of kin and inherited everything because my partner was afraid that writing a will would jinx him. When I "remarried" a few years later (still before marriage was legal), I immediately wrote a will leaving everything to my partner.

Your videos are must-watches, this one perhaps more crucial to heed than the others. You draw such clear parallels between NAZI and MAGA. If anyone doubts MAGAs, if given power, will make good on their death camp threats, they better think again. On a lighter note, IMO Fosse is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time despite that he only made a handful of films, all of them masterpieces. He clearly wasn't easy to work with as his All That Jazz makes clear he himself knew.
