I wish they would just let Robert go back to Suicidal and get Jason back. Robert’s probably the better bassist, but Jason adds a certain aggression to Metallica that I don’t feel Robert has. Jason was/is multi faceted. Jason’s growl vocals were one of my favorite things he added to Metallica. He kept em gritty enough to stay out of the main stream, while achieving worldwide fame and success with the band.

Rob is rad but Jason Newsted was the bassist when I was a little kid and first got into the band. He will always be MY metallica bassist.

Jason was the most accomplished, fully fledged Metallica bass player ever Less technical than Rob, but way more complementing band sound with proper backing vocals and (even if I definitely don’t dig it as a bass player myself) pick playing and right in between Rob’s (lesser) and Cliff’s (wider) song writing contribution Cliff started as a typical guitar player (classical, fingerstyle guitar player) and it tells from his soloing, and the use of fuzz/chorus/wah Rob too started on classical guitar (and it tells from his skills with his fingertips) Jason can play some spare guitar too, but he’s the only natural born bass player of the three And it tells from the accuracy in doubling guitar parts and filling in with vocal harmonies and… excercising never ending “patience” with the rest of the guys… usually all trademarks of a proficieht bass player I play fingerstyle And slap and solo at times, using an array of pedals if need be… still Jason was the reason why I started to leave classical guitar in favor of playing a 5 string bass
