I was a YN3 on the RUSH during the referenced storm. LT Lundgren our OPS officer had the con and turned the ship 180 degrees on the back of a single gigantic wave. I was on the bridge for that one and when we crested and turned the ship rolled and whipped at the same time. Boot tracks on the bulkheads and vomit on the bridge wings LOL. I visited our two MSTs in the wet lab and they were both sitting in their chairs buckled to their desks watching rain and sea water slosh back and forth across the deck. Neither one greeted me. They were both pretty green. One simply pointed to fractured seams in the bulkheads both vertical and horizontal at the deck level that let what felt to me like ridiculous amounts of water inside. There were other superstructure fractures but the wet lab seemed the most obvious. Fun times.

When I was in USCG lightships were being replaced with " Texas Towers " [ offshore oil rig looking platforms ] think Coast Guard still had 16 lightships in 1966 . Returning from Guantanamo Bay Cuba to Portland , Me on cutter Coos Bay in 1965 the local lightship hull read " Portland " not Cape Elizabeth . Remember reading in the local news paper about a crew man on deck with a lawn mower ... they thought he was nuts . Turns out he was just fixing it .

Why is it that the USCGC STORIS IS NEVER mentioned in the Coast Guard’s icebreaker list! WAGB-38? She was built during the Second World War and wasn’t retired until 2007! Her homeport was Air station, Kodiak, Alaska. That was my old ship and I miss that old gal!

I was lucky enough to serve on a 378 right out of bootcamp "USCGC Morganthau" 1991-1993. Sad to hear she was decommissioned many years ago but I guess they can't last forever huh and have to make room for a bigger and better model.

Former USCG ET here... isn't about time Someone made a Memorial Patch for the Hamilton? It's not official... but While I was in GOV ISLAND... I designed a First District Patch. No one wanted it. It was 1*... Or one ass to risk... Low and behold years later... I found a patch of it.😂

Three words: Minimum Manning Concept. Add chicks to the mix and life starts to get miserable fast. In the words of an old Executive Officer: "'270s are the last stop for a lot of people in the Coast Guard".

Stood boiler watches & maintained diesels on CG 311's during '60's , these cutters were reliable & well designed - engines & machinery on today's fast response cutters looks a little too cramped for my taste . Hope they are not an engineer's [ MK's ] nightmare .

I think you missed my ship, USS Brister, DER-327, which appears in a photo at about 7:29 moored inboard of DER-388, probably at Pearl Harbor. I was aboard from May 1965 to November 1967, for three WESTPAC. deployments. A similar history to many f the other DER s who were decommissioned/ sold or scrapped by about 1970.
