4G Internet introduced high speed Internet. The maximum speed that 4G supports is 100 Mbps. Such Internet speed is needed for high quality video streaming. 5G on the other hand is capable of having maximum speed of 20Gbps and a very low latency compared to 4G. Lower latency allows real time action. For example, low latency is very important for remote working such as controlling a crane at construction site from office or a robotic arm at hospital for surgery. Besides that, 5G also aims to virtually connect with all IoT devices and thus, it has a higher bandwidth range to increase the capacity of devices connected to 5G.

5G and Fibre are totally different. Fibre Internet is completely wired and 5G is cellular network which usually is wireless. Being a fibre connection, the internet speed would always be constant. 5G being wireless internet, the speed depends on signal strength & signal quality.

Unlike fixed-wireless internet, 5G is not heavily affected as much because 5G works by sending signals in all directions. It definitely is the future as we speak. Even now we are on the verge of approaching to using 5G and B5G technology where everything will soon be interconnected, faster downloading and uploading speeds (which everyone loves in order to avoid throwing their devices out the window when they see the loading screen), etc. However, this technology still remains to further be rigorously tested through many trial and error as we have seen that B5G technology still has several issues that needs full attention such as privacy and security, the problem of using high frequency bands which will limit the range those signals can travel between cell towers and end user, and the low latency issue. The second issue is the technical complexity that comes with it. The port stakeholders use different systems that are developed, managed and maintained by different teams or entities. For example, they can be developed either by port IT teams, either by third-parties or by IT providers. Moreover, they can be based on various technologies. Another issue involves the IT and OT convergence and interconnection. Usually OT systems, more vulnerable than IT systems, are protected because they are separated from IT systems and networks. But, increasingly, IT and OT systems and networks, become more and more dependent and interconnected, exposing OT systems to higher risks.
