First Look: Le Coq
This is Le Coq, the latest-and last-venture from Puffer Malarkey Collective (Herb & Sea, Herb & Wood, Animae). Their swan song. It’s classic Puffer Malarkey, minus the ampersand: mood lighting and velvet and lacquer and sex appeal. Opens this weekend in the La Jolla space that once housed Malarkey’s Herringbone.
Tara Monsod-fresh off the heels of her historic James Beard nom (first ever finalist from San Diego)-is helming the Le Coq kitchen. She spent time in Paris, convened with the city’s Asian chefs, returned energized and ready to put her spin on French classics. Her take on land-and-sea dishes focuses on the ocean’s flora-pork and seaweed, lamb and sea beans. Everything from steak to seafood will be sourced locally.
Le Coq is grown-up, libidinous; the interior caters to modern running-away-to-Europe fantasies. Exposed brick walls. Baked steel trusses. The space is made for flirting, lingering, tête-à-tête in candlelight.
“In Paris, we saw people gathering inside and outside restaurants, hanging out, talking, eating,” Monsod says. “That’s what we want to see here: diners engaged with each other, with lots of wine, lots of laughter, enjoying each other’s company. This restaurant is not meant to be quiet.”
For both Monsod and Puffer Malarkey Collective, this is a full circle moment. The celebrated chef cut her teeth at Herringbone; now, she’s steering the ship.

You know how some people turn their birthday into their birth month? Really milk it for a full 30 days? Well. Turns out “some people” includes us. In our defense, we’re celebrating a milestone-2023 marks the 75th anniversary of San Diego Mag. And to honor that history, we’ve collaborated with local artists and creatives every month to recreate classic covers. For our finale, we asked Encinitas ...

Get the croque madame. Oh man. That thing. A ham sandwich with ambition. As Common said, it doesn’t take a whole day to recognize sunshine. It’s just special in here. Not one person makes it that way. The designers, who managed to pastel without doily-ing up the place. The audio nerd who built that retro sound system that looks like Rick Ruben’s dorm room. Owner John, who started the dream in 2...

If there is a Mt Rushmore of San Diego dishes-iconically delicious things carved for eternity on Cowles Mountain-this man’s Jamaican jerk pork belly is on it. He can’t escape it. It’s his “Free Bird.” Even though he’s made multiple albums worth of great dang food, a good portion of San Diegans stand at his door and yell “DO THE PORK BELLY!” He is Jason Knibb of La Jolla's NINE-TEN Restaurant. Get the raviolo. Pasta by hand, stuffed with sauteed prawns and ricotta, then silked up in a brown butter-thyme sauce. Brown butter is one of the best flavors on earth, a magic trick where you heat regular ole butter until the solids caramelize and the flavor is somewhere between oh dear and god. This is my guide to where I’m from. Favorite dishes, drinks, places, things in San Diego. The stori...

Get the pocket burrito filled with machaca. She toasts both sides. Grab a cafe de olla. It’s simmered until fuerte, marinated overnight in cinnamon sticks and piloncillo (a raw Mexican sugar with hints of caramel and endorphins). This is SDM’s Guide to San Diego Food Drink. I am always cheering for the kind young people who actually create helpful content. I hope this guy becomes a millionaire and goes to every country to try the best foods. He deserves that.
I ate here on opening night first seating. The meal was fantastic and if you are able to get a seat I would highly recommend it. The price is not cheap but the experience was worth it.
Lol. The genuine concern about Jordan just going live all of a sudden. Really nice interview. Congrats to Jordan
Just went here and it’s Amazing.
I enjoyed this very much!! Thank you for having Jordan on. I very much respect and commend him for his dedication and commitment to staying the course and pushing himself forward through all the many challenges, extreme difficulties and various obstacles AND HE’S KIND?!?! Nothing in this world is easy and I would like to mention the fact that Jordan didn’t take any shortcuts to - not only make it but he has exceeded and succeeded his lofty goals despite his admitted weaknesses. Being truly humble and genuine is just not found anymore, not on this planet. Jordan is young enough to be my grandson, I understand difficulties and I am truly awe inspired by this bright young man. Come here… You deserve this achievement, Mr Stallion… I mean, Mr Howlett ~

Idk What ure talking about but those Cardiff crack tri tip nachos are heavenly. That’s some of the best meat they sell only at seaside market. And that chicken sandwich looks really good. Besides that they have Phil’s and grand ol bbq which is amazing. Plus hodads which is good but better in OB personally. It’s gonna be a wait cuz we have sold out almost every game 🤷♂️
Why would you wanna invest in anywhere in California the State suxs

Where is this?
Southern California, San Diego. For the new location it's talking about. For the one in northern California one is in Fairfield between San Francisco and Sacramento.
One in Riverside just opened 🤤
@@pna1dra6onThe one you’re talking about is in Richmond I believe next to San Pablo Casino
Awesome, I cant wait to get there and try the turkey tacos!
That owner vivian is very rude and condecending. FACE to face. Was very disapointted. Of her behavior. Specially coming from so far to eat there.

I may come down from the dark drizzle of Portland to busk saxophone in your local sun. Looks like you have a place for contact and communication.

Awesome video...I'm in town and just went to the Tuna Harbor Dockside Market for the second time and it's amazing!

Looks awesome but 90 bucks a person seems kind of steep
It keeps the peasants out
Twenty bucks - in the early 90s. And the same for a bottle of domestic bubbly. My house-guests loved it.
