I propose a modification to the idea. Let his whole body actually be vapor and gasseous so that the face and features are never fully visible or that a smoke excudes to such a degree that one can barely see the skin beneath. maybe a strong blast or wind can reveal some of the flesh beneath for other horror related stuff but in general, imagine this to actually be a black cloud, with a spectral shape somewhat visible beneath the billowing smoke. and of course that cloud can be deadly too, why not.
