Welcome! I have been involved with music, my whole life! Since third grade, I played the suspended cymbal with the chorus and fell in love with drums, piano, composing, and teaching! I have two music degrees: BFA music, education, and MFA Percussion performance. However, my best teacher has been life and teaching for 30+ years as I've learned so many different methods at work for seven different people! I live in the north east USA with my wife, two dogs and my 10 year old son. I'm hoping to start businesses through grass, roots, drumming, as well as grassroots piano! Learning correctly, and giving you motivation is one of my top goals! bye for now, Jim

Another great video!! Awesome fill it’s nice to see you’ve included the bass drum even for a beginner level!! It’s always important wish I had fills like this when I was a beginner haha
@@ALICEmusician thank you so much for supporting my drumming CZcams adventure :-) yes, I agree I wish I had B.D. integration right away!
Great video! Relearning drums and this was easy and helpful. Love the visual diagram too.
@@washywashie thank you so much for your feedback! Thank you and wonderful comments... do you have a favorite music?
Thanks. New sub. A lesson on left foot work for opening and closing hi hat would be great.
@@achoice2bmade thank you for your wonderful comments and support. I'll definitely look into a video soon with left foot technique :-)
This lesson feels like going to a friend on a Saturday afternoon where he is about to teach you the basics of drumming and have a few beers afterwards. Similar to 66Samus' video on learning blast beats :D Also probably the most detailed presentation about the grip (the basics of all) I've seen, lots of key points here! Subscribed!

@@ALICEmusician 🎉👍 you're gonna have so much fun! It's funny. I have a big jazz background, but I wanna get into rock again. What kind of music do you like?
@@grassrootsdrumming that’s awesome!! Honestly I need to branch out again to different genres I haven’t in a while since my drum lessons have been cancelled for personal reasons. I’m mostly a rock person do want to branch out to pop punk but my control when it comes to speed isn’t quite there yet so I look a mess 😅 but I also want to branch out to things like funk because I love funky music haha. Jazz is also something o should do more often
@@ALICEmusician years ago, I had a wonderful musician telling me eventually you'll be become your best teacher, although that doesn't always fit every student, but if you have the inner Drive, you'll be on fire! I haven't met a drummer or a student that says they hate funk, drumming, so good for the soul and coordination
Great!
Thank you
@@DiamondGirl-1234 you are WELCOME‼️ how long have you been playing drums? Do you have a fever kind of music? Bye-bye wish you well.
@@grassrootsdrumming just getting started.
@@DiamondGirl-1234 awesome! Did you get a drum set yet? Or just focusing on stick technique with a practice pad?
@@grassrootsdrumming practice pad
Nice start. May i suggest. The first 'one' is indeed hihat+base, but the first 'one' after the fill is crash+base. The rest of the band will be looking for that 'one' after the fill. You might as well get that in right at the beginning of learning. Don't forget the hihat hits of stem and tip of the stick.
@@perro0076 thanks so much! I plan out of basic outline, but then I just go and teach like if you're on the room in the crash was a little extra :-) but I think many viewers will benefit from your thoughts. I always love feedback! 👉 how long have you been playing drums?
@@grassrootsdrumming Hi. My wife and I have only just started. Still trying to nail basic grooves. We thought we were doing OK until our teacher threw that hihat technique at us. Also introduced basic paradidles for use in fill-ins.
@@perro0076 the shoulder tip takes some time to get used to and I definitely didn't want to teach it for very first lesson on CZcams! However, I just recorded that yesterday. It's all about the journey!

This is a really good beginning lesson.
@@MP-db9sw thank you so much! How long have you been playing drums?
@@grassrootsdrumming I started a little over a year ago. And YT has been where I go to learn new stuff so Ive seen a lot of beginner drummer videos. Iirc from watching this the other day, I like that you have a simple beat thats pretty easy to follow, integrating the kick while also talking about the importance of the high hat, keeping/changing time and an intro to time signatures. Its a lot of important stuff presented in an accessible way. 👍
Oh yea, and fills. What they are, when to use them and an easy starter for a beginner.
@@MP-db9sw thank you so much. I tried googling it, but I don't know LIRC is❓ of course RC is ride cymbal :-) i'm very excited to build this channel. I just did a lot of recording today with more basics and fills. Since this channel is new, I'm rolling out my humor slowly. You have been warned!😝
@@MP-db9sw yes drum fills can be a mystery and so many learners will play something fast and flashy, but it's not musical, especially if our field and tempo is all jig jagged. If that makes sense? 👉 do you have a favorite style of music?

I think it’s great that you start off so openly! I sometimes feel like I am too late at 21 y/o having my first experiences, but as long as I’m having fun I’ll keep going!!
This is wonderful thank you so much for saying hello! What kind of music do you like? No definitely start now. No worries at all. You’re super young :-) but even if you were 91 you can still play and learn!
Grip is really important and even after playing for 20+ years, I still emphasize where and how I'm holding the stick. You mentioned people that play with a really tight grip, and when taking that to a drum kit, you can develop blisters and strains in your hands, wrists and arms. It can seem like common sense to hold the stick tight as you move around so you don't drop it and such, but that really turns into throwing the stick versus just dropping it. Proper technique is so important!
Glad to have a fellow drummer/percussionistshare thoughts! Do you have a favorite style of playing?
@@grassrootsdrumming it’s between progressive and jazz - some focus on polyrhythms and odd time grooves
@@AK2CO thanks for sharing. I have a background and jazz which I’m hoping to share on this channel. I like teaching from the ground up so it’ll take me a while before I start getting into intermediate advanced stuff :-)
