I’m working hard to bring you correct and understandable information about the Basque language that is verified through:
•grammar books by Basque grammarians
•the Euskaltzaindia
•published linguistic research papers
•and most importantly, native Basque speakers
I want to bring you both Standard Basque and dialectal content, because language is not just what is written in a grammar book, but also what is used by real people on the street.
By not being a native speaker of basque, I’ve been in the frustrating situation of not understanding these foreign grammar points, so I don’t have native speaker blinders on. But with 15 years experience dabbling in languages from various families, hopefully I can transfer to you some of what makes Basque stick in my brain.
There is a lot of content about Basque, but it is very hard to find if you don’t know where to look. I want to solve that for you by bringing it all to one place and giving you those resources for you to see for yourself!

Hey, do you know of any good verb conjugators? I´ve been using verbix but sometimes the information appears to be incosistent, but I can´t really tell if it is or not since I´m not at a very high level in basque. Anyways please tell me if you know of any good websites for verb conjugation!
Thanks for asking! The best one, in my opinion, is this Adizkitegi (www.ehu.eus/seg/morf/5/16/1). You can either search for forms (bilatu adizkiak tab) or explore the conjugations of each verb (jokatu adizkiak tab). You kind of have to play around with it, but it's reliable since it's made by an actual Basque organization and not just a general conjugator for whatever language like Verbix is. If anyone else has any other suggestions, please let us know! 😄
@@basqueberserk Ongi, mila esker! While studying basque I´ve found it very useful to know and have studied three specific languages to be able to understand how basque grammar works, and I think the specifications of these languages have really given me an advantage in learning faster. I am curious on what languages you´ve studied or known before learning the basque language and it´s grammar
@@Cementarii Yes! Studying other languages has helped so much in terms of grammar short-cuts. I studied Spanish which helped with a little vocab, German was my first intro to a language with declension, and Russian helped me learn more about the use of cases. Danish was helpful because it adds the definite article as a suffix on the noun like Basque does. Korean introduced me to Topic-Focus-Verb word order, and also particles which, in my opinion, helped me understand Basque’s ergativity. Finnish has like 14 cases so that helped me seriously with Basque’s large case system. So studying a bit of all these helped speed up learning Basque, but no language I studied prepared me for the huge difficulty of finite verb forms! 😅
@@basqueberserk I have an extremely similar experience in languages except replace Danish with English, replace Finnish with Hungarian (both are related languages belonging to the uralic group), and no Korean. The rest of the languages are basically the same, except I mainly studied Russian grammar while having the native speaker "blinders" for it and Hungarian. Hungarian helps a lot to understand agglutination and it´s billion suffixes (cases), so it works well for Basque, and English is also very important because it helps understand what auxiliary verbs and articles are Если задам тебе вопросы вот так, то всё равно поймёшь?
Ah that's so cool! Most magayrul tanulok egy kicsit! Basque has helped in so many ways learning Hungarian! (Although Hungarian is still super hard, I think it's more difficult than Basque.) Hehe, unfortunately my Russian classes were a long time ago, and I had a hard time getting into Russian, so I still know some basic Russian things, but not enough to understand, no. I want to re-learn it one day!
A big cultural reference is txoria txori, a famous poem and song about a bird. I have seen Ardi in some names, too

@@basqueberserk Very interesting! I've been reading about it, because my family has a wee bit of its heritage. All this time I thought it was very much like Spanish and wow am I surprised.
You're not alone! It's definitely common for people to think Basque is a Spanish dialect, or related in some way. Do you happen to know where in the Basque Country your family came from?
@@basqueberserk I just assumed because we have Spanish from Spain as well. I don't know where yet, and all the older ones in the family have passed away so I can't ask. In spanish they use asno for donkey. Im guessing it comes from the basque asto
Unfortunately I think Basque borrows asto from Spanish/Indo European, for example, donkey in Latin is “asinus”. In English we also have the word “ass” for donkey but it is not a polite word where I am from. 😅
Assinus comes from old celtic. Celts did borrow it from basque but not sure tbh
@@goikofinanzas hmm that would be interesting! Some sources say from Asia, but who knows, either way, I love when words come around full circle and go through distortions, it’s quite a journey.

Nice and interesting animal nomes. It's curious to see that some dialect forms have some similarities with Portuguese.
Oh really? I don’t know much about Portuguese but I guess some of the more Latin/Spanish-based ones would be similar?
@@basqueberserk Exactly. The similarity is because of the ties among the Romance languages. Maybe those dialectic variations of Euskara come from a Spanish influence and therefore Portuguese remains next too.

That's the first time when I got a proper explanation how s is pronounced!
Oh man, that’s crazy. Good for me, bad for the learning community at large. A lot of Basques make the letter S into a harder “shh” sound, too, so it is often confused with X, and even in written words you might see S replaced with X. 😵💫😄

Hi thanks for making these videos. You may already know this but Wikipedia has a page called “Basque Grammar” that might be a useful resource. It has a section that talks about Nouns and there is a separate page for Verbs. Additionally, there is Wiktionary, which is related to Wikipedia. There is a page there called Basque Language. There are a few pages there, but I specifically like the Basque Lemmas page. I’ve only really scraped the surface of browsing it. There sure are a lot of entries. I hope that you may find the recommendations helpful!
Thanks for this! Yep the Wikipedia article on Basque grammar, at least in English, is a pretty good place to get grammar info. And Wiktionary is great too! Though a lot of missing vocab when it comes to Basque. ☹️ thanks for your tips!! ☺️
Google Image Search can be useful for translation and may give you a clue if there isn't a Wiki. With a bonus, that it gives you an additional comprehensive input.
That’s so true! What a good tip ☺️

Thank you for all those explicit examples, and thank you for pointing out "northern" variants: I plan to relocate, this year, to Iparralde! [And that's why I'm in a hurry to pick up some Basque.]

@@basqueberserk My wife, daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter: Bayonne; myself, nahi dut (bai?) a more rural setting, and Itsasu seems to be the closest county to Bayonne where streets are not called “rue” or “chemin” but “karrika”, “bidea” or “errebidea”, so that’s what I want to check out: Itsasu ikusi nahi dut!
@@franciscooyarzun2637 very nice! It seems like a nice town. I certainly hope you will find some Basque speakers there. ☺️
@@basqueberserk My French is good enough for shopping and so on, and it will improve, but I have no expectation of ever being seen by multi-generational French as “truly” French. Basques, on the other hand, are SO grateful and celebratory towards anyone who actually 𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 to speak Basque, plus they apply this litmus test: if you speak Basque, then you ARE Basque, never mind your looks, origin, etc. Add to that that I actually do have a Basque surname, and I’m IN, I figure. Yes; I want to find a place from whence I felt no desire to move elsewhere: ez dit beste inora joateko gogorik ematen. [Ondo nago?]
@@franciscooyarzun2637 it is nice that the Basque people actually respect others that learn and speak Basque. 🙂 And although I’m good with Basque grammar, I’m not especially good at determining (or qualified to say) whether someone else is speaking or writing Basque well; your best bet to gauge your Basque is to find a native and ask if they would help you. There is a subreddit on Reddit if you want to ask for help practicing there, and also a Discord server, if you are familiar with those. ☺️
