Very nice build!!!
I have everything lined up and ready to go. It won’t fire up now any ideas?
Assuming it did run before set up, it's only a few things it could be. Depending on the model you pulled from, there's usually a safety switch in the handle bar that can be bypassed if need be. It could be one of the start buttons that I've seen replaced with a toggle switch on youtube. With my model, the part that gave problems was the magnet for the grass catcher which can be bypassed or even a piece of metal in it to close the circuit. Worst case scenario, it's the controller and not much you can do other than replace it.
Yeah it ran perfect when I took it out of the ryobi. I think it’s one of the original 40v ones it’s a black one. I’m assuming I missed a safety switch somewhere
@Dcabat check the one in the handle to make sure it's fully extended and the magnet. Is there a light on it? If so, does it come on?
@@rustyscreations yeah light comes on and it’s a self propelled one, when I have the self propelled motor connected it will spin that one as well.
@Dcabat yeah, then it's most likely one of the safety switches that's keeping the blade motor from turning.
Have you had any issues with the abrupt stop when you cut power due to the inertia of the reel? I've almost completed a build using a lot of your ideas and it seems like it may cause an issue after awhile. My small sprocket looks a little worn from my few tests and I'm wondering if it's from that or if it was like that and I didn't notice.
I haven't seen any issues, but that is definitely something I have been keeping an eye on. Most of the issues I've seen with others reaching out about the sprockets showing wear is from either a loose chain or the plane of each sprocket is a little off to where the chain doesn't track straight. I have thought about trying to find a "freewheel" adapter for the sprocket so that when the motor stops, it's not such an abrupt stop
@@rustyscreations I was thinking about finding the same thing. Might extend the life quite a bit. If I find something, I'll pass it along!
@@erikgreenly7076 Thanks! I appreciate it!
Can you build me one and how much
I'm working on a few kits as we speak
How do you adjust the blade to the bednife now?
Harbor Freight is $5 a wheel here compared to Amazon which is $21 a wheel.
Those wheels alone for 10 of them are $210. FJB.
What an inspiration ! - so much so, that I’ve copied your design with a few differences. I used a Kolbalt 80V mower as the donor that I found on market place. I also cannibalized the Fiskar handlebar attachment and welded it to the Kolbalt handlebars. So I could keep the stock controls on the stock handlebars without too many modifications to the Fiskar Frame.
This is great! I am actually in the process of doing my initial conversion to my Fiskars, however, I’m having a heck of a time getting the rear/large sprocket off. I had zero issues with the small sprocket on the reel, but the large just won’t loosen. Any suggestions? My mower is in great shape, and I’ve seen other posts saying the large sprocket is much tougher to remove than the smaller one, but nothing has worked for me yet. Any advice is much appreciated!
Sorry for the late response. If you haven't already gotten it off, try heating it with a torch. That should do the trick
Gotta have somewhere to store the FrankenFiskar! Are you in Texas?
Yes, I am in TX
Any issues or updates after a year of using it? Was very interested in doing something like this with my Earthwise, but someone said I would need to "gear it down or have a variator to regulate max speed"
I have been running this setup for 2 years now and haven't had to do anything other than the sprocket setup with the larger one on the reel and smaller on the motor. It hasn't given me a single problem
I have a 2% slope so I have to run sometime to get it to cut, I was thinking maybe it should be self propelled and maybe use casters for the front Wheels.
I love this! I wish ryobi or any of the box store battery mower brands like ego, ryobi make one as well. I know ryobi had an 18v line but discontinued in UK only.
Can't understand why these huge companies can't make a decent consumer grade battery reel mower like this.
I’d pay to have this done to mine. This is brilliant
Hello , I have used the same motor from the same mower you used but the motor is turning counter clockwise, any idea why ?
Did you switch any of the wires? I guess that is where the issue is.
@hailutekle2911 Yes, you need to switch the yellow and blue wires to change the rotation. Leave the green wire alone.
Did you have to reverse the motor and if so can tell me what color to what plz thanks. i doing the same building but the motor is spinning wrong way?
@captin959 the yellow and blue. Leave the green alone
I love how you can hear the ice cream man coming at 3:14! Nice work!
I still think Rusty has an excellent and viable way to transform the Fiskars to a world-class reel mower, and I just want to buy the side plates minimal. Ha.
Great build.
How much to buy one of these built by you??
I agree. How much would you charge to build one
What is the lowest HOC?
9/16" but I have had the frame catch the ground at that height. I started the year at 7/8".
Nice engineering
This thing is 4000x better than what the Ryobi engineers came up with. I just know you got somebody fired at Ryobi 😮😂.
Thank you! I got tired of waiting for them to make one.
This is amazing. Great work. Im gonna try to build one. What color or brand is your paint ?
Thanks. The green is Krylon ColorMaxx paint+primer gloss citrus green. The black I used Rust-oleum engine enamel
Mower is next level man! Motivated
Thanks!
Very creative. If I was you, I would get a patent for this design as quick as I can before somebody else does it. Great job.
Amazing!
What spacers do you use between the wheels if you don't mind?
I plan on getting the wheels from harbor freight today
@@Bro7th a.co/d/gBXlPHW these are the washers I used. Bought 2 packs of them. I stacked up all the wheels on the axle then added the washers til it was a snug fit. Then just take those washers and evenly distribute them between the wheels
this is amazing, I would luv to build one like yours
Brilliant and beautifully executed... a neat finish and no loose wires. Everything is in its place. Wish this could be done as mass production.
Thank you!
I would buy a kit also!
Tapping a hex head sounds pretty difficult, did you "round out" the hex first with a file or something, or just tap straight from the hex?
celticknyt, it really wasn't that difficult. I did round off the corners to get the tap started, but after that, it's just nice and slow with plenty of lubricant.
Rusty, Please provide additional information on how to tap the hex bolt and a link if pistols the lock bolts you settled on. Great work!
I'm building one
Sweet!! What rotary mower are you using as the donar?
@@rustyscreations 21 inch model 401150. I'll be making a video on it very soon I'll give you all the credit
@BOOM!BY!BY Nice!!! You got one of the newer models! I've been wanting to get ahold of one of those. Wanting to see if the motor is the same bolt pattern. That also should have a second motor for the self-propelled that would take it to another level!
Yes it has a self propelled motor. I will be pulling it apart soon. May I haveyour email in case of any I may have. Im in south Florida
@BOOM!BY!BY rustystogs@gmail.com Holler if you need anything. Helped a few guys out building their own
I'd buy this kit
Your lawn looks amazing
I wonder if the same electrification method could be used on a HudsonStar mower.
Most likely would be a fairly easy conversion since the Hudson star is chain driven as well. Just don't know how practical it would be for an already expensive mower. And I think Hudson star already has alot better clip rate with their gearing than most manual reel mower. But if I could get my hands on one I'd probably try it
This is precisely the kind of cordless electric domestic reel mower that the manufacturers should be producing. Instead they only produce greensmowers, large and costly domestic reel mowers and that dirt cheep thing that came out for $200.00 that the manufacturer calls a reel mower but consists of razor blades around a cylinder that need regular replacements as maintenance. I hope you’re planning on producing and marketing these. If you can augment a cartridge system similar to Allette mowers I think that a brush roll that switches out with the reel and dumps the clippings in a bag would be a great feature for suburbanites with driveways and sidewalks.
Exactly Bruce! I feel like there is still a huge gap between professional greens mower and smaller units sold for home owners, especially with battery powered equipment. All of your manual reel mowers (earthwise, scotts, fiskar, etc) are better quality reel than the one with razor blades, they just need a "power supply" to fit in that category.
Would you be interested in selling this or building another one to sell?
This one is not for sale at the moment. I am working on a kit that can be bolted on and built at home.
Done the same - IMO you may have issues with the chain tension. I use a 250W 9.5:1 reduction motor & the torque is INSANE. No tensioner is effective. If there's a big load & some bumps you'll quite possibly jump the small sprocket (done it a bunch). I pack out my motor mount with washers to give the correct tension & no chain tensioner is installed - never skipped a beat now. You could also change the sprockets to larger ones to help avoid this & spread the load over more teeth - if anyone is building the same
Yard looks great. Really like what you did with that custom mower. Talent🍻
Thanks!
Is it water tight to protect the electronics and cleaning?
It is not water tight but I have rinsed the mower a few times after backlapping and had no water get into the internals. Just had to be conscious about not spraying water directly down on the lid.
superbe trop fort
Thanks!
That is awesome. You know Striperman came up with the roller and rear wheels on his Fiskars back in 2020. Motorized is a whole new level
Thanks Keith! I've definitely seen Striperman's fiskars. Even the motor isn't a new idea though. There's some crazy builds I've seen. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and how easy it is to move. Working on the ideas that this could be done with any battery platform.
@@rustyscreations that would be definitely even better
Wow, great build! Best and most professional diy electric reel conversion I've seen. Would buy a kit if you decide to make those. For those of us already heavily invested in the 18 volt line do you think we could use that platform or do you think it needs to be the 40 volt platform to power this properly?
Thanks a lot Jeff! So I've seen on CZcams some using an actual drill to power a manual reel mower. If you were to do a similar build as I've done, I would try and find an 18v mower and pull that motor rather than using a drill motor. I would assume it could be done similarly but you may have to step up your mowing frequency so your not putting as much stress on a smaller motor with more grass clippings.
Please show it running and mowing! Awesome build. What a great talent and skill you have.
Thanks Randall! Got a video of cutting the front yard czcams.com/video/RqBYVMtxxvk/video.html
Those tree’s GOT TO GO ! if I had those it would ruin my entire mowing trip ! 🤣Actually just looking at those trees messing with your awesome stripes is make nuts ! Lol
Lol. That's why I got rid of the tree rings. Couldn't make a straight pass without maneuvering around something. But I've gotta have some shade in the summer ☀️
🤣Why not grab yourself a REAL REEL MOWER ? I have a HUDSON STAR Professional Greens Mower nothing but the best for my lawn 👍🏻
A Hudson Star would definitely be a step up and doesn't need a motor for a beautiful cut. I just can't put that much money into a mower. Was trying to find/build an affordable battery powered reel mower (already invested in the batteries) that anyone could do something similar on their own.
Take my money!
Awesome build! I would also like to purchase your kit. Many thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks Jason! After using it for a season I'm really happy with the build. There are a few tweaks I would like to make for the kit. Tear down coming soon
@@rustyscreations Hey Rusty - any update on the “Fiskarstein Monster” tear-down/kit?
@Jason Price I'm actually still mowing down in TX. I've got all my measurements and detailed sketches for it. We have a big cold front coming next week so after the holidays it's getting disassembled and meeting with a metal shop.
@@rustyscreations That sounds wonderful. Thanks in advance and I will continue to follow. Please keep me updated, sir.
