Hand-painted Vintage Saw by Andy Dolphin - Tattoo Removal
Something a little different...
I am a signwriter by trade but rarely do any sign writing these days except on small novelty projects.
I like to paint on vintage saws, often around 50-70 years old. The texture is rough, even after a clean-up, but they look great hanging on a wall.

So beautiful. Going to give the wheat belt gum tree a go
Great atmospheric color sir !!!
I have a question. What medium do you use initially? Looking at the video, I thought the first layer of wood was pretty wet and would be difficult to paint over.
It was just solvent and, yes, it was a mistake. 🤦♂️ I don’t recommend it.
lovely video, one of my favourite. not only because of visuals but mostly because of what you say :)
beautifuly done and i love that phrase at the begining : "welcome to my studio" :D haha, so nice
Andy is not painting any more???
I'm a Yank who moved to Australia after Vietnam (2/502 Inf, 101st Airborne) to work as an art teacher... An Australian brought me the cross cut saw about 6 feet long from the turn of the 20th century and asked me to airbrush this "Outback" drover scene. I said instead let me spray a clear urethane coat to seal it and you can sell it for about 2 and 1/2 grand ... I re-drew the saw in "Corel Draw" and took the new image to a "laser cut company" I have done some work with. They made a thin blade and 2 half thickness handles made so he could mount it to his wall flat. I used to teach decorative finishes, so I created a rusty blade and distressed handles with his mural added...everybody was happy... nice post...
Great Job... Do you sell it ?
Thank you Andy. I know the amount of fuss producing any video can be, let alone achieving a successful painting process in front of cameras. Thank you for taking the bother and sharing the result. I admire the clarity of your process. As I watched I could feel myself wanting to jump forward and add more detail. Your well-practiced restraint was a very good lesson. Fortunately I don't live in Portugal but in Perth and will get to come along to one of your workshops in August. :) Looking forward to meeting & learning from you then.
Loved your technique and the confidence of your brush strokes in this one. Your use of the toned surface was very enlightening. Thank you!
Brilliant and superb execution!! Thank you very much for your advice for the beginners and I'm one of them!!
Very nice tutorial. I will check in more often!
Tonal shapes and values is what beginners often overlook in trying to get a first impression. Yet that first impression doesn't arise from applying a multitude of colours which in the course of the painting leads to uncertainty and frustration. Seasoned artists like Andy seem to be well aware of that. Thumbs up!
Beautiful! And your discussion on materials, drawing, and color was as fresh as it was liberating!! Thank you!
Thanks Robert.
I agree a great video ,super talented, and awesome humor thanks for some cool ideas

Great!!!!!!
I love the red undertones- great tip
Andy, that is a god damned masterpiece! Thank you.
Love your job Andy!!!
Andy, hi's artwork are beautiful. Congratulations!!!!
Beautiful painting and thoughtful commentary. Thank you!
Great video.. what did you paint / cover the blade with in the beginning?
People use a variety of things but I used Penetrol.
hope you don't mind me being honest, but I think I preferred the original with highlights - it just seemed fresher (more honest? ) somehow, and matched the bright foreground (to me anyway:) The latter dimmed tree kind of feels out of place with the vibrant grasses lower right . Again - hope you don't mind me sticking my virtual oar in - it's a superb painting either way.
Wow, that's a great video. I will always cheer for you in Korea I'm looking forward to a great video. Have a nice day.
Very good work
This is my channel concerned with teaching easy drawing and colorlike it ing with its various techniques ..I hope you
what is paint, oil or acrylic?
Signwriters enamel
Excellent lesson! Thank you!
Those are the most profound words I have ever heard from a painting tutorial here in youtube. Working on the foundation and principles, brands of materials are not as relevant, let the colors take care of itself. This is freeing!
Very good
You could have stopped at the 4 minute mark and had a good painting because of the values and depth you had established. It's like the old saying of a poor craftsman blaming his tools- more colors won't fix a bad start.
Thank you
It was so beneficial.Tank you
Fantastic painting and commentary. Well done!
Nice job!

Well done ! Very bright painting !
learned a lot - thanks !
When I like an image I try to replicate it in watercolour. So this one was one of the most liked watercolours in my Facebook page. So thank you! And welcome back!
Beautiful tree and background. Thanks
Great tutorial in a easy voice and harmonie of collors thank you Andy, greetz from the Netherlands afz: Henk
You make it look so simple. It’s just stunning!
Nice work, and nice video! Thanks for sharing...new subscriber 😉👍
Thank you. Hopefully I will do some more videos soon.
Man that challenge of following along with a different, limited palette was perfect for me. I've been stuck in the idea of learning values for a while, and I'd have trouble tracking brightness across colors, thinking I just had to get better. But following your suggestion made me realize I was too obsessed with matching the individual colors to the source, so being forced to say "this is the only way I can go darker" and then see the harmony of it working at the end has been probably the most significant breakthrough for my ability to paint. I'm actually producing pieces now that look like paintings I would want to look at myself!
It works :) Value and composition rule. It's why black and white photography is still popular.
Great commentary and explanation - the painting turned out well!
This is me in ten years. :D
Magnifique réalisation l'Artiste 👌👀👍.
Beautiful
Would you mind sharing what brushes you use? I have been trying to lighten my paintings-they end up so dark- so I am going to play this again and follow step-by-step. Thank you!!
I use different brushes all the time. Sometimes expensive bristle brushes, sometimes cheap bristles and sometimes flat synthetic. Brushes are not that important. Learn to control the tones first, before worrying too much about the type of brush.
