Basically this is the hours before the Nanchang Uprising. Many Kuomintang troops joined this uprising as they switched sides to the CPC following the April 12th incident.
The Chinese Red Army originated from the KMT army.
This was one of the CCP's revolts against the Kuomintang, so they had Kuomintang uniforms since technically they were Kuomintang soldiers at the time.
That circle symbol wasn’t the symbol for KMT at that time but is the symbol for the collaboration government in the first Chinese united front between KMT and the communist. This movie scene was during the white terror time period in ShangHai where Chiang’s troops massacred thousands of communist sympathizer, starting the first Chinese civil war. The civil war will be put on halt until 1945 due to the Japanese invasion. Then we all know what happened, Chaing lost and CPC won.
