Here I am, drawing, trying to find some music. A specific song actually. I'm clicking through these to find it. I click on "11:34" as it's the next song on the list. Before my brain can even register that it isn't the song I'm looking for I am trapped, transfixed by the image of the snowy, vacant pathway in what seems to be a park. Dark, but illuminated by the dim orange hue of the park lighting. I'm not sitting at my computer anymore in rural Washington state, far on the west coast, in May of 2024. For the next 20 seconds, I am there again. It's Winter of 2016, I'm in Ottawa, ON, Canada. I am exploring the "Lower Town" area of the city that I had just moved to last Autumn. It's late, no later than 2 AM but no earlier than 11:30 PM. Byward Market, the district that borders Lower Town, is a hub for the night life of the city. It's where all the people are at this hour, Lower Town is quiet, it's residence asleep by now or out at the one of the Market's many pubs. The lights from the Market are just far enough to cast a dim glow in my area. The snow blanket dims the sounds of the city, and as the snow continues to fall and the fresh snow crunches beneath my boots I feel, for the first time in my life. Like I am home. I'm from California, I only lived in Ottawa for 3 years to go to University there. I miss it a lot, and as I'm getting older and my anxiety has gotten worse I've developed pretty bad memory problems. I've hated almost everywhere I lived. Usually for no /particular/ reason I just....felt uncomfortable there. Hated California, Hated Connecticut, Could do with or without Washington. Nothing has ever felt like Ottawa has to me. That picture looks so much, SO much like the park in front of my apartment. I wasn't writing the above thing for flare or "aesthetic" it really is a legitimate, vivid memory. I remember that now. It was my first Winter in the city, my first Winter by myself, my first REAL Winter as a person from California who never experienced it. And I loved it, I loved it so much, I loved bundling up to protect from the cold, I loved my winter hats, I loved "hiding" my feet inside a pillow case on particularly cold nights, I loved hearing the snow plows stop to open the chain that blocked off the rest of my street. It was so peaceful, everything was so peaceful. I was so happy.
