Make an Easy Mason Jar Flower Arrangement!
In this video I show you how I design a quick and easy natural flower arrangement in a wide-mouth quart mason jar. I start with eucalyptus. For line flowers, larkspur and snapdragons provide color and height. Feverfew fills in the empty spaces. I chose some white mini callas to serve as my focal flower. Chinese forget-me-nots and nigella add some interest and finish off the arrangement.

This video covers my third year profit and loss working as a self-employed florist in 2010. I made over $56,000 in revenue part-time. Weddings were still my primary business. I had more expenses in 2010 because I moved from working out of my house and rented a workspace. I also bought a delivery van (note - I loaned my business money to buy the van. Thanks for the info on local flower sources. Sourcing has been one of my biggest challenges in the SW Florida area. When in the Bay Area, I used the San Francisco Flower Market and honestly was never left without options. Choosing flowers live and in person was a very gratifying part of designing flower arrangements and this Market provided an exceptional experience and I always felt a rush when there. I've used Mayesh in SF and online and love the varieties of flowers and colors, they are exceptional. The prices are high and sometimes the quality of online purchases doesn't match the expectation but in a pinch they can provide almost everything needed.
I'm glad you found this helpful! I love the San Francisco Flower Market. I used to live in San Francisco. Such a fun place! If you're interested in learning more about local sourcing, I offer a class called Growing Your Business with Local Flower Sourcing. It's a great resource for florists that want to source locally. thegardenersworkshop.com/product/review-florist-school-online-growing-your-business-with-local-flower-sourcing-with-ellen-frost/
Beautiful design and great color combo
Thanks so much!
Like the extension tip!
Glad you found it helpful! Do you make alot of big urns?
@ellenfrostflowers no, actually, I'm very new at this. I really enjoy watching and learning.
Loved your video Ellen. I'm ready for step #4 (volunteering/freelancing...). Is it as simple as contacting floral designers in my area, introducing myself and my skill-set, and asking if they have a need for freelance work?
This is such a great question! I would definitely start setting up meetings to meet florists in your area. Be sure to reach out to home based, studio and brick and mortar florists. It's helpful to start to build a portfolio of your work to be able to share with florists you approach. This could just be an Instagram page. Do you have a IG for your flowers currently?
I didn't mention it in the video, but check my free webinar where I explain nine different florists' revenue sources and evaluate each of them for ease and profitability. www.ellenfrost.com/how-to-make-money
Now I know how florists do it! As I take arrangements to people more often, I've been wondering what the best way to do it is, and the information has been a little hard to find until now. Thank you!
so glad you found it helpful! if there other behind the scenes videos that you think would be helpful, let me know!
That’s fascinating! And your wreaths are lovely.
Thanks so much for watching!
Very helpful! Thank you!
So glad you found it helpful. Do you make alot of bud vases?
@@ellenfrostflowers I've mostly done mason jar arrangements but want to start doing bud vases.
Do you dehydrate for this?!
We let all of our flowers air dry in our studio. Once they're dry, I cut them into small pieces for the confetti. Do you do any flower drying?
ANGLE ! Thanks Ellen , turned out beautiful!🌸
YES!!! Angling is the KEY! Hope the video was helpful!
Very nicely done and simply explained. All of the filler and flower shapes and sizes you used are in my field. There is tons of Variegated Solomon’s Seal which can sub for eucalyptus! I almost gave up on mason jars but I see now it was me, not the jars😂
I hope you'll give them another try! The variegated Solomon's Seal is a favorite and for sure can be a sub this time of year!
This was just what I need , Thank you Ellen
Amazing! I love to hear it! THANKS so much for watching!
@@ellenfrostflowers I look forward to every video. Our local area is having a flower show, and I am entering some arrangements one is a mason jar. These tips will up my game

So glad you liked it! Do you ever design in mason jars?
@@ellenfrostflowers Yes, but just recently. I’ve grown a lot of cut flowers this year but I’ve needed more help designing flower arrangements! I was very pleased with the arrangements I did today. I felt much more knowledgeable! And I was very pleased with the results! Thank you again!

Very helpful. Thank you!

I love your aesthetic!
Thank you SO MUCH!
So pretty and whimsical. Thank you for all of the design tips! How much would you charge for an arrangement like this?
I just added the retail price to my Cost and Materials sheet. You can see how much it cost to make and how much I sell it for retail.
Love this! Thank you Ellen.
Thanks so much! So glad you found it helpful!
My 2012 wedding was full of blue mason jar arrangements, and now that I'm growing my own, I still love them! Classic.
I still love blue mason jars too! very classic!
Really helpful
Glad you think so! Do you ever make arrangements in mason jars?
I saw your cost breakdown thanks - did you mention how much you would charge for it?
I'll add it in! great idea!
Very helpful - thank you.
So glad you found it helpful! Do you ever make arrangements in mason jars?
@@ellenfrostflowers Yes, I do, and now I realize that putting the foliage in first for a base is a key part. Thanks.
Absolutely Gorgeous ❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Love using dusty miller instead of eucalyptus in a natural looking arrangement.
Dusty miller is great! Especially for cool color palettes!
Do you leave the ring on the mason jar?
Sometimes! it's a cute look! Usually I remove it and give the lids and rings away to canners in my neighborhood!
Beautiful! Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for watching!
Are you a fan of lazy susan turn tables or not? I'm arranging for a casual BBQ wedding this weekend with Mason jars and this video was very reassuring thank you! 💐
I like the lazy susan but I feel like I use it more for footed vases and larger arrangements. Good luck with the BBQ wedding! What kinds of flowers are you using?
@@ellenfrostflowers Good to know just curious! Thank you so much, I'm in WA PNW so I still have porcelain ranunculus blooming well! I have fragrant sweet peas, sweet William, queen Anne lace chocolate mint and Veronica's. 🙃🥰

Thanks for watching! Do you ever make arrangements in mason jars?
@@ellenfrostflowers I have a lot of mason jars but somehow the notion that it's passé has kept me away from arranging in them. I know it shouldn't. And your video inspired me to go ahead and use them! Love your flower arrangement videos using locally sourced flowers. Would love to learn how to get a longer vase life.

Yesssss! So much texture and color! And the bouncy stems!
I love them! they are so whimsical and fun!
More pretty than plastic confetti!
totally agree!
Loe It!! Potpourri is Back!!
so fun!
I LOVE this idea! Especially for an outdoorsy wedding?
Totally! That's what we used it for! it was really fun!
Those are beautiful colors!
I think so too! I've been loving them!
Love them but to showcase them (like a focal flower) you need so many and a focal should be just a few of them to make the statement. Plus their stems are so thin and winery sp? that you have to have them float on top of other larger flowers. But I do think they are extremely special 💕
I agree with the exception of maybe a focal flower in a bud vase arrangement with a few smaller flowers and foliage.
YES! that's what we've been talking alot about is SCALE!
Great info! Thank you for being transparent about your biz financials & experiences!
