Hey, everyone! In this video, we're going to share tips on how to visit Moraine Lake and Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Banff, Canada, along with some valuable tips on how to visit and access the lakes, which has become more difficult since summer 2024.
How to Visit the Lakes:
Personal vehicles are no longer allowed to park at the Moraine Lake parking lot, so the best and most recommended way to access the lake is via the Parks Canada shuttle system. However, spots are limited, and it is very competitive to get a ticket.
Ticket sales happen on the Parks Canada website, where you can buy tickets in advance or last minute. In advance, tickets are most likely sold out weeks or months before, so usually, last-minute purchases are the way to go. The sale for last-minute tickets happens 2 days before at 8 AM MDT. In our experience, tickets were "sold out" in seconds. It was very fast.
Suggestions to get Tickets:
- If you are in a big group, don't try to make a single reservation for 4 or 5 people. Instead, try booking 1 or 2 tickets per shuttle.
- The same account can purchase multiple tickets.
- In our group of 4 people, we got 2 tickets for Moraine Lake at 6:30 AM and 2 tickets for Lake Louise at 7:00 AM.
Visiting Both Lakes:
- There is a shuttle that travels between both lakes every 30 minutes, so you can start your visit at either lake and go back and forth.
- If you intend to visit Moraine Lake first but only got tickets for Lake Louise, you can start at Lake Louise and take the shuttle to Moraine Lake right away from Lake Louise.
- You can use the shuttle as many times as you want until 7 PM when the visitation/shuttle service ends.
Enjoying the Lakes:
- We recommend going very early and starting the day at Moraine Lake.
- Not only is it less crowded, but the early morning light also reflects beautifully on the lake (a picture with a timestamp is included in the video).
- By around noon, Moraine Lake becomes packed as more and more shuttles bring people.
- It’s also better to rent a canoe in the morning since rentals are first-come, first-served.
- If you are not able to get a shuttle for Moraine Lake, there are private tours and the Roam public bus system that may offer alternatives.
- Lake Louise is more easily accessible, but parking is still competitive.
