Non-technical reviews of audio gear.
Cambridge EVO 150 All-in-One Player - Review!
This review should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm a sample size of one, and my opinions will inevitably be somewhat biased. I'm a self-confessed Cambridge audio fanboy. I love their products.
But also, I review audio gear from my own perspective not from what should apply to the wider scope of audiophiles as I suspect most will prefer more of a technical review replete with data and measurements.
And luckily there are already numerous reviews of this product online. Reviews that dive into this rather in depth. And rather than add to the pile of same-same. I'm going to tell you why this is the perfect Lifestyle Integrated amplifier. For me.

Focal Aria Evo X N°3 and Center Channel Review

As I've been doing this, I have started to prefer floor-standing speakers over their Bookshelf counterparts. There's something about the extra drivers that leads to better separation more articulate bass and a fuller sound overall. And depending on the size of the speakers the full range nature of them differs. This one, the AriaEVO X N°3 leans toward the near full range end of things. REVIEWED...

SAVE 10% for one week starting June 28th. Code: Arylic123. This might be a bad take, but I found it difficult to slight this product in any way. It's an inexpensive, do-it-all, amplifier that delivers the goods. And I did go off-script a bit so please forgive any of my rambling. I was trying to be as honest as possible. Could you please explain how to integrate this product into a 5.1 Set with an AVR/Receiver? Did you connect the pre-outs L/R of the AVR to the Aux-In of this 150? And if yes, how does it turn on? Automatically or through 12V Trigger? Thx
No problem, L&R preout from AvR to the aux input of the EVO 150. Then in the StreamMagic app, enable Home Theater bypass on that input. And in my setup either the Cmabridge remote or the Marantz remote powers both products on and off simultaneously, no trigger required!
I fully agree, owning a Yamaha RX-S600 5.1. AV receiver (2014) I'm looking to upgrade this (lovely) machine with a similar sized device and technologically up to date, but indeed also in NL one can actually just choose the Marantz Cinema-70s. There's nothing else on the market. So please Yamaha, NAD, Technics, Onkyo etc. please shrink your AV-receivers. Also please ditch the rather outdated monochrome dot matrix displays 😉
How to compare to the kef ls50 meta
I haven’t heard the Meta, but it wouldn’t be a fair comparison. These are bigger in every aspect.
Awww...
I love these soooooooo much
Me too!
Come on dawg those front speakers are begging for a dedicated 3 x channel left - center - right multichannel amplifier. You are not experiencing the full sound of these incredible speakers with a puny Marantz receiver.
You must not have watched the video. Dawg.
@@0102studio Bruh these speakers need a monster Emotiva Reference Differential 3 channel or NAD Master series. You are not hearing these speakers with a Cambridge streamer integrated amp all-in-one. You need 200 watts a channel minimum to all 3 channel / speakers.
@@chebrubin no. You don’t. 200 watts would no doubt be better, but they are easy to drive and they sounded great.
@@0102studio huh? You have to test the 3 x speakers 🔊 using a strong 3 x channel amplifier, especially with subwoofer off.
@@chebrubin ok.
By the way ... Small Amp does not mean Small Speakers. Get almost any TPA3255 based amp hooked up to some decent floor standers -- Pioneer, Heresy or L-100 -- and you're in for a real treat.
Yeah, since they left amp here with me I do plan to go back to it at some point. But since I won’t be cracking it open or modding it in anyway I imagine the sound will still be so-so.
@@0102studio Give it a fair chance... 50 watts per channel is not to be sniffed at.
@@Douglas_Blake_579 its not the 50 watts. I have and love a few 50 watt amps.
@@0102studio 50 watts is more than enough power for most people ... on the right speakers it can get right freaking loud. In fact most reasonable listening occurs at 2 and 3 watt levels with the rest being used for transients and peaks. My point was that the TPA3255 mini-amps I've worked with all seem a little anemic on lollipop speakers and do much better on the towers. For example: I'm using an Aiyima A07 in my main system on a 36 volt supply. This gives me about 75 watts of power. On my desktop speakers it's kinda "meh" but when I let it loose on my Pioneer towers it's like "Holy Crap" good.
Interesting review. I also find most of Fosi audio stuff to be good but not worth writing home about. There's something just "not quite right" about their design work. I've delved into the their TB10D to the level of doing a design critique and found a few things they can do better ... most pronouncedly keeping the output filter coils away from the big chip's heatsink. They tend to interact rather noticeably. Modifying the heat sink to create some clearance got rid of that NQR sound problem. Other mods brought out the better in the amp. Resulting in far better sound. Another shortcoming is the use of NE5532 op-amps. Not the best choice, but dirt cheap and readily available. On amps that allow chip flipping, I generally sub in RC4558 or TL072 chips with much better results. (the replacements are less than a dollar each) I haven't done a deep dive with the BT20A Pro, and don't plan to. But you should know that the TPA3255 chip, when properly implemented is capable of sound that will rival almost any decent stereo amplifier. Other than these small mini-amps you will find this chip in studio monitors, AV amplifiers, PA Amplifiers and even a few mid-range HiFi amps. Volume match them, do an AB test and you would be unable to tell which is playing. The key phrase here is "When Properly Implemented" which many of these mini-amps do not do. Do a side by side with an Aiyima A07 (original design) ... you'll get the idea.
Background tune ❤ sweet.
Thanks!
Fantastic review. I am loving mine. It has both simplified and enhanced my home movie and music enjoyment.
Thank you!
This is great . Got 2 ch Rotel power amp, and this thing is dynamite ! Can totally do movies and stereo duties, especially in strereo pre amp mode !
@@owisun85 amazing!
I agree on the lack of phono stage, nuts it’s the same thing on the M10, HifiRose’s two all-in-ones. Additionally, their original price point would mean its competing against the M10 or HifiRose 201 If you are going to do that, have a touchscreen.
It is a strange thing. I wonder why.
I would add, the new version of the NAD C700 has a phono stage. I wonder how the S14 compares to that.
@@danielpudvay1486 I would love to find out!
Que diferencia hay entre un Marantz 40n y un Marantz cinema 40, en tema de música. Se nota la diferencia musical?
I haven't heard either of those.
I have no issue with class D. My last 3 amps have been a Chord, BelCanto, and a Devialet expert pro 250. All wonderful and used, so I saved thousands.
I have the cinema 70s, I find it really struggles to power my warfedale EVO 4.1’s and KEF r100s, is this a significant upgrade in 2 channel stereo sound? And I assume you still connected your sub to the 70s?
I switch my sub back and forth sometimes. But mostly leave it cinnected to the 70, yes. But yes its a huge upgrade to the Cinema 70, as would any outboard amp.
My bother had this I think he found it abit too polite he was running B&w 704 s2 at the time
I am interested in the new ST45 to be reviewed - available from September / October 2024 ☺
Me too!
For connections, since I use this as a 2 channel system, my main one is a computer through the USB interface, but also have an old SACD player I still connect (stereo only) through the analog inputs. I also really like the fact the Rotel has balanced inputs for a future DAC upgrade, if or when needed. If I ever replace it, it will probably be for Rotel separates. I'm also happy with the HT bypass and triggers, because if I do replace it, then it will find a home in the AV system :) Yeah--the remote and display suck :) But I don't really care about that given how good the amp is overall.
Thank you Very Positive Review I. 'm convinced now Just Waiting for seller to get back to me on my offer I made him ❤ ur Review I'll be bk on Ur Channel Very soon
Thank you for the review. The most important part for me was comparing the EVO to the CXA, as I am always torn between the two. I wish you had a hint between EVO and Marantz. If possible, give a brief description. Sincerely
Oh they’re not comparable. Power wise the EVO out guns the marantz which is beneficial to these speakers.
@@0102studio And compared to CXA, do you vote for EVO in general?
@@ramin3080 for a full featured product, yes. But if you just need an amp, and don’t need hdmi, tone controls or a streamer, its a toss up.
@@0102studio If we want to compare the sound of EVO with CXA 81+CXN V2, what is your opinion?
@@ramin3080 for that, you’ll have to wait. I’m working on that right now!
I was just trying out some of the music you mentioned at high volume on my Cornwalls. My girlfriend opened the door and asked if I was listening to a construction crew build a house 😂
😂 😂 😂
Have you gotten a chance to check out the Axxess l3 speakers? I think they just came out but look great for the price especially the bookshelf version.
Those do look awesome, hopefully soon!
Have Focal in my white cargo van 😊
The focal aria 906 k2 limited edition was a direct competitor for the Kef R3 for me, in a listening test, so I'm not surprised the new focal aria speakers are very good as well. I'm going to repeat the listening test this year with Kef R3 meta's, and hopefully the new focal aria as well. Although the WAF for floorstanders has turned out to be quite decent, it's starting to end as we remodel the living room so I will have to switch to bookshelf speakers, with likely a subwoofer for additional bass. I agree that the colour is pretty stylish on the focal arias. Would fit my room quite well.
That’s awesome, good luck with the renovation!
Love these, and I don't really like green cars or cloths, but these I really like the color and at first I was off about the cone material, but immediately found myself knowing the French designed it with form and function. So I noticed the weave is like plaid seats in a Porsche, it just works after you take it all in. These may be my next speakers to add to my Marantz SR7015, even though I do really like my Klipsh atmos speakers in 9.2.4 . Congratulations they're beautiful. Cheers
They are worth a listen at the very least. Thanks for watching!
How do you remove the cover on this sub I have one and can’t get mine of
The grille? Its magnetic.
I don’t like Marantz being associated with Denon 🎉
Out of curiosity,… why?
I can see what you mean. But I got over it once I realized that Marantz AVRs are the best in the business.
I currently have a Cambridge CXA81 and have been very happy with it. It’s driving Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G speakers and until recently my source was an Emotiva ERC-4 CD player, which also has optical in for my TV. I just swapped out the Emotiva for the Rotel DT-6000, and for the first time have the sense that the Cambridge is holding things back with its 80 watts, being right at the low end of what Monitor Audio recommends for the 500s. The Emotiva didn’t reveal enough bass detail for this to be such an issue but with the Rotel player it feels like there’s information off the CD that the Cambridge just can’t quite realize. All of which is a long winded way to see if you’d recommend the 1592 as a good upgrade path. Some reviews have said it’s bright, and the 500s are very detailed in the treble so I’m worried about it being too much in the top end. Would welcome your thoughts.
I didn’t find it bright at all. Detailed, yes. But also, there are tone controls onboard which I find help immensely.
I upgraded from the CXA81 and there was such a huge improvement in the sound it was actually hard to believe. The Rotel isn't bright in the slightest, but it is detailed and powerful. I'm using KEFs (first LS50 metas with a sub and now R11 metas)--and they don't take kindly to harsh amplification. I would highly recommend it for your Monitor Audios--they need the oomph the Rotel provides.
Thanks! That’s encouraging. I just found a floor model RA-6000 for the same price as the 1592 and I’m waiting for that to arrive now. Sounds like I should be happy.
@@jamieroberts8844 totally agree!
@@jamieroberts8844 Well, I’ve had the RA-6000 for 48 hours and yes, what a difference from the CXA. Much more than I expected. I don’t know that the 6000 is much better than the 1592 - most people say it’s incremental at best, and I only went 6000 because it was the same price. Definitely won’t be looking back now though. Thanks for the advice.
Don't worry about following the script, as long as you say "it has oomph".
The Oomph factor is important.
The real question is... will it oomph?
Man, I hope so!
Which one would you choose: the B&W 706 S3 or the Monitor Audio Silver 100 7G??
They’re close. Its been a while since I had the Silver 100 so my recency bias leans toward the 706. But I recall being smitten with the 100. I wish I could have them both!!
So...this was free?
Yeah, they sent one over for review.
Just made a deal for a like new pair of the Gloss black. Can not wait to get them into my system
I have to try this one on my patio.
That might be a perfect use case!
I hsve the silver 100 6g in white , it is fantastic speakers.
Do you notice any fan noise . I want to order the 540 but am concerned as some people are complaining their too loud during quiet passages
I don’t remember hearing it, but it was a few years back.
Best review on this amp. Thank you. The comparison to a14 mkii and cxa81 was super helpful. I did note that Andrew Robinson hated the S14, but in the same video, he was praising Audiolabs 6000a, which is a very bright amp and most don’t consider anything that special. I think Andrew was disappointed in the new sound direction, but I honestly like a fuller sound and hate bright amps and speakers. I have the S14 arriving today (got it for $1k), so fingers crossed it sounds good to me 😀
We all have different tastes, and sound preferences. And I like that many of us have completely different experiences with gear. Let me know how it goes for you!
Back in the DiVA day's Arcam had a single remote for everything in the line. It is silly.
I really wanted the A18 back in the day. If I ever stumble across one in the wild, its coming home with me.
speaking head only ?! Where is sound test ?
Somewhere else.
Adding to all of this, by the time you get to the point where you need all the connections, better protocols and devices are on the market ... But AVRs are a niche market. Would it make sense commercially ?
It’s a curious question for sure!
I don't think billionaires got where they are by wasting money on snake oil audio gear. 😂 The most I would pay if I was one, based on my personal research would be the Kef Reference stuff or Perlisten, the REL subs, Rotel Michi amps and Marantz AVR's. The most exorbitant amount I could think of spending on a full audiophile grade Atmos Cinema/Music room would be about $300K TOPS.
😂 still, I would like to see what they drop their moolah on!
Thank you for spending some time with the AMBEO Soundbar Plus, Taps! Footage is looking 🤌🤌
Thanks! As always, it was my pleasure!
Enjoyed this video! I've been rather taken with Fritz Heiler’s Carbon 7 SE Mk 2 standmount speakers. They have a uniquely simple crossover that make them amenable to many kinds of amps and just sound, well, lusciously musical. Short review here: czcams.com/video/LpI6eAvc4_M/video.htmlsi=6wzJT_eyxFT4m6sq
Very cool, thanks!
I used to have little 707 s2 with rel 1205 mk1 but rarely had time to listen to music so bought a Sonos arc and gen 3 sub instead for movies. Music sound quality is not comparable but movies wise the Sonos arc is pretty good and much better than my 2.1 set up. What made me go for Sonos was the bass quality is not too far off rel 1205 once broken in but obviously doesn't go as deep. I don't have the surrounds but still enjoy my movies. My brother has 703 s2 as mains and 707 s2 as surround and t9x rel which sounds a lot better but I still enjoy my sound for movies
That’s awesome, while I have yet to get my paws on the Sonos I have heard good things!
@@0102studio don't think it's as good as this soundbar but I got mine new at £630 not £800 full price. I don't think it's worth the original but a good product anyway
Good channel, I like your real-world non-techie-speak approach. You should reach out to A British Audiophile, he might be your long-lost brother.
Lol amazing, I’ll check him out!
Hi, I m from Odisha , How can I buy these Speakers if Some Demo model available if you e ?
I have no idea. 🤷♂️
Thanks for sharing! Great review! Is it true that if you connect an amp to the GX70 you loose the use of LAPC? Thanks!
Good one, thanks. Once again, the black shiny thing is a giant put off. Glad to hear you play them for us all to hear though. To be honest, I was hearing a slight hollowness and couldn't unhear that. I like the size of the Quad Revela 2 and wonder if you would entertain a small tower speaker from Bowers and Wilkins. Nobody seems to review the 704 S3. I wonder how it sounds while being a tad more expensive than the Quad Revela, it may be quite an interesting one.
Sorry,… I didn’t play music on the speakers on the video. I don’t have a proper mic set up to make that happen. As for the 704’s I have requested them, I’m just waiting for one to become available.
One thing I dont understand: the cxa81 delivers 80W and on the technical specs of the speakers, the recommended amplifier requirements are 80-250W (!). Are this requirements from monitor audio serious? It is hard/impossible to find any amp from audiolab/cambridge/rotel that goes above 80W… so that confuses me… do you have an explanation for that. Are the 80W of the cxa81 really enough to “feed” those beasts? Thanks
They’re big speakers. And powering such speakers to their fullest requires a good amount of power. You can however use the base 80w thats available in most amps, 100w is fine too. But more will give you more headroom.
Thanks for your reply =) Can you (or anyone) recommend an amp that works good with this speakers and has more power than the mainstream CA/Audiolab/Rotel/Etc. that hardly go beyond 80W?
@@MasterofpuppetsBS Rotel 1592mkii.
Thanks Bro…
Ok, so this might not be a fair comparison but I have a recapped NAD 3020 and a Fosi TB10D, which is close enough to look at the points you are making I think. When my NAD came back from its major service, which after 45 years it really needed, I swapped it out for the TB10 I had bought to tide me over in that particular set up. Small room, old KEF Q1 speakers, just a near field decent but not mind blowing sound. Now then, the first thing I noticed was the FOSI had a very noticeable wider sound stage, there was much more, I guess people call it instrument separation on the FOSI, the sound was of course more "clinical" but actually I felt it was a much more "technical sound". I have the TV and old S10plus connected to a SML D200 headphone/DAC and swapped the NAD out again and put the FOSI back. I have now swapped them back again after a week to see what I think. I guess my point is, the sound from the FOSI is far from terrible, in fact in many ways, its pretty decent and when you consider the price, well its very decent. Forget the figures on Wattage, meaningless, though it does go bloody loud. I shall see how I feel after a week of the NAD being back in place. What I would say though is for the TV, the FOSI is better by a very decent margin, its sound stage and separation is much better suited to TV, IMO of course. Have a great day.
I love this. Everyone has a different perspective and experience. I don’t think the Fosi is terrible, for around a hundred bucks, its pretty good.
@@0102studio hey, by the way, "not terrible" is slang over here for it being fair, if not exactly stellar!
Love my 685 S1 as well. Engaging and intoxicating speakers! Been thinking about the 607 S3 myself in another room.. Thank you for your input and review.
I ended up picking up the 606 s3s.
