Graffiti Kings - Radio 4 Documentary Re-Edited

BBC Radio 4 produced a documentary on graffiti as an art form. I thought I'd put it together with some illustrations of the art.

University of Kent, Canterbury, graduation in the Cathedral 1991
I was there 94-97, its not the same since it became too big for its boots.
What an amazing video. Brings back many memories from my UKC days 1988 to 1992, although I was in the US 1990 to 1991.
Hi David, we've just come across this and it's amazing! We'd love to share it on our channels if that's ok with you?
Hi UKC! Very happy for you to share on your channels.
This was a great trip down memory lane thanks for posting. I worked as one of the onsite carpenters there from 1989 - 2004. Great times!
I graduated in 86 so not much different to how it looks in the video. I have been back since and thought that the sight lines of the campus are not quite so pleasing as they were then but of course everything evolves as it had done when I was there from the two original colleges in the 60s. Lovely place and have very fond memories of my time there.
I was there, 1991 was my graduation year, and I don't recognise a single person in that video except for the guy in glasses at 1:13 in Darwin bar who I think was on the Standing Orders Committee. And lest we forget the ugly Darwin chandelier. Shame UKC radio doesn't feature in the video.
Brought back some memories...graduated in 1978 (when the uni was still 'young'). Glad to see my old college, Keynes', duck pond was still going. Thanks for posting David.
Same here !
Eliot, though.
Thanks David for sharing this video. Things to note - Pay Phone Booth, No one is looking at text on their phones (they didn't have cell phone), VHS Cassette video, people are looking at real books in the library, not on their notebook computer (again, no one had one), need to go to Computing lab for real computing exercise, and STA Travel!
Wow. Brings back memories. Was there in the late 80s/early 90s. My first few days were spent navigating around Rutherford College! Never seen so much concrete although was fortunate enough to have a room with a view of the Cathedral. Some of the best years of my life. Miss the pub crawls followed by a stop at Westgate Kebabs, Studio 3 (?), Weds at Christ Church College etc.
I was there 1993 - 1996...fabulous picturesque campus, made lots of friends, lovely nights out in Canterbury, used to run with the Canterbury Harriers too! Best time of my life studying there. Would love to get in a time capsule and relive the whole experience. I am middle aged now and still look back on those days as the happiest in my life. I lived on the Whitstable Rd with friends. Had my first ever Indian meal in a restaurant on St Dunstan's and had wonderful nights in Cafe Des Amis (its still there!), The Cricketers, The Black Griffin, The Old Bev, and Keynes college. I went back to campus last year and it was not as picturesque because they had built on it. Shame. Students there now have no idea what they missed in the 90s--- before cell phones and miserable twitter and FB (all of them a menace)
I was there 94 - 97. They do have a good nightclub on site now. Would have been nice to go there instead of hiding students in the boot of my car so seven of us could go to The Works on Sports Fed night lol.
Is not even singing xD
That bloody Datsun outside the Mandela Building lol
In 1993, I had a place but attended Keele instead. Damn it!
Well that was scary. Looks much better now
2001-02
Does anyone has 1988 degree congregation video?
3nineties5me
I prefer the old Kent logo, but they can keep the pan pipes!
Graduate 95 .... Wish i can turn back time :-)
me earlier, 1988, We are old folks now.
I graduated in 93 and loved my time there. I like the part in the library study hall, where everyone went to leave their books for hours while they went off for coffee. I live in the US now and still miss Canterbury!
It was the same 70/80's.
I was born the year this video was made and I have now graduated! There is even further development work going on right now. I love this University so much, and am gutted not to be going back to study further :(
You have too much time on your hands Bradders!
Hi Jackie. The song is Big In Japan by Alphaville. It's great, isn't it? I've added the link to the full version to my video description.
What song is that your playing?
Keynes? You changed man!
God this is dodgy, why is everybody so stoic and from the 80s.
Nothing has changed after all these years! Even the Cathedral was there!!!!
They have the same dodgy pan pipes on the 1993 graduation video
I used to teach there in 1991 in Cornwallis West oposit the Gulbenkien cinema 3 / theater
I was born the year this was made- I'm a student at Kent now. Hasn't changed as much as you might think in 21 years =O in my second year now and am very glad to be here too =) very special place- thank you for posting!
I love this video because i have a dog named nash, but he looks like the other dog in the end of the video!:)
lol at the "computers"
Love this vid. As I remember it back in the early 90s. It was a special place, and while it's undergone many changes, both structurally and academically , it's still that special place. Thanks to those who put this vid together. Kent Alumni RULE!
As dated as this video looks almost 20 years on, it resembles more how the campus looked when I was there in 2002-2005, as now it looks very different...there has been a lot of development in the last few years it's almost unrecognizable.
I also studied at Kent 2002-2005, and you're right, it looked pretty much the same as it did in 1991 by the look of it. I visited recently and it's changed so much since I graduated.
This is hilarious, the music's awful! The campus looked a lot less sorry for itself 19 years ago, though.
awesome - thank you - I lived next door to the uni in 1991 - I was 16 and used it for cheap drink, gigs and skateboarding! what a special place it was ...
Fabulous! Great to see Cathy Seabridge opening the place - I'd half remembered she did - as she was the first person I met on my first day back on 12 September 1977, in my first job...
Thanks for sharing that, David! It was exhilarating just to watch. The main thing that occurred to me watching the whole video was: "How the heck did you avoid swearing and/or spewing?" Much kudos to you!
