When Arrau recorded this sweet piece by Chopin, he was still relatively young, and, perhaps in his best form. It is difficult piece, but Maestro Arrau gets the best of it, in my opinion. Although many have been critical of his sonority at the piano, I agree with the vast majority in saying that his strong sound at the piano, being of a special quality, at the special times when he used it, is just as pleasant and needed as any other technical quality as he was famous for. I've always loved the music played by Maestro Claudio Arrau.

...deeply admiring Scott Ross - but I'd say: his registration is clumsy a bit. Quite static & not very structural. Nevertheless an interesting recording. Thx for sharing!

Best interpretation of this masterpiece

Some admirers of his incredible skill as a harpsichordist might not even be aware of the late Professor Ross's remarkable proficiency as an organist. What is truly amazing is how Scott Ross accomplished so much during his tragically short life - a statement which (sadly) could be made about many of the great names in the history of serious music.

I never thought I'd hear a Trout that matched my favorite Trout with Horszowski and the Budapest, but this is superb! I love this Julliard in Mozart, too. Here, they are so well matched with Arrou for beauty, musicality, liveliness and swing. They really have this deep in their souls, not playing overly cautiously, slowly or boringly like so many other Trouts. This is youthful, jolly Schubert!

Lyszt's piano transcription of the bucolic Pastoral made it easier for many people to play and appreciate the piece. But only Glenn Gould made it unworldly. Thank you very much for sharing.

First off I love music but I'm no musician. This disclaimer out of the way, I feel this rendition is sumptuous (it is Arrau!!) but that the 1st movement's main theme which is one of Chopin's most special in the way I believe it is meant to played with some flexibility in phrasing that sets "Chopinian" pianists apart, completely eludes Arrau. He's heavy and I suspect I now understand why he did not revisit this work for Philips. This music was perhaps not meant for him. Also it seems he plays a very unusual edition. Very thrilling definitive performance of one of Bachs best and most expressive pieces (b minor!). Behaves all the time except for the climactic circle of fifths passage near the end of the first movement. A small price to pay. The last movement, the echo, is nuclear powered. Oppenheimer and Szilard would have approved
