Hey, just wanted to say that I've been doing exactly what you're talking about for the past month, and it's been incredible! I’ve almost got three separate books down in a World of Warcraft series set in the Wrath of the Lich King era but decades in the future-where no expansions beyond Wrath happen, including Deathwing. Each of my group’s characters has their own book, and their stories overlap in a few chapters before they all meet up in Booty Bay to go questing together. I’m using AI to write almost one-for-one perspectives for each character, and it's amazing how much depth and material I can generate this way. I've already pumped out 600+ pages in the last five weeks! Each book is deeply immersed in WoW’s lore, but my undead rogue, Muckwallow, occasionally breaks the fourth wall, talking about leveling up from within the game and even outside it. I started this when I decided to take a break from gaming, and what I thought would be just a few chapters for one character has now turned into a full-fledged series. Your videos and others like it have helped me expand and deepen my storytelling even more. Now, I’m diving into another book outside of the Warcraft franchise altogether. Thanks for the inspiration!

In my fantasy series "Thelema" I created a fictional metal called "Thelemite" said to be created by the gods. It's used in crafting pendants that all mortal humans require to live - removal of which is instantly fatal and irreversible. Said pendants also convey cryptically a person's life purpose and are each tied to another half belonging to a person's "twin flame," i.e. their soul mate. The metal itself is shown to have a number of material properties. It can make durable weapons (just don't ask where they get it from) as well as masks and veils for use in certain religious cults, but a chain made from it can stretch with a bit of elasticity, or even be snapped under human strength. Perhaps most-notably, however, is Thelemite's ability to act as a conductor of willpower, which is used in the series magic system as all magic is will-based. In most instances, a person must be making physical contact with an object made of Thelemite in order to use this ability. And upon a person's death, their pendants are usually returned to a deep body of water or a river that runs to one, wherein it's said that the "children of the gods" come to recycle the material presumably for use in making new pendants for those yet born. Because of Thelemite's properties as a conductor of spiritual energy, it's also used in the forging of artificial beings - basically living corporations - that work and live and interact with humanity on a daily basis. This process, as well as the government's processes for forging weapons from Thelemite, are highly classified and safeguarded.

I just want more stories where everyone is immortal and the stakes become something new and strange since death is whatever

In my story, necromancy is a sort of taboo art but only bc they help taboo deaths: su*cide. Those who commit su*cide are trapped as ghosts, and battle demons. Necromancers cast out devils and reinsert the ghost into its body and grant it movement so it can walk to the underworld, away from demons (who are bound to the world of the living). Many cultures frown upon su*cide and so frown upon necromancers for helping them. I have other limits and laws on what a necromancer can or can't do, but essentially they are human, and so can be good or bad. But because of its limits, not many evil people can do much.

You seem to have some very specific ideas about necromancy. Maybe define the object of your videos in the future, this was painful. All the advice about might and limitations applies to all magic systems. What I really disliked was the thing about resurrection. Necromancers are typically associated with some kind of flawed resurrection, with often multiple drawbacks from bodily decay, mental decay, weakness to sunlight (holy magic, silver, gold, metal, obsidian, living plants, flowing water ….), the need to consume (flesh of the living, souls, blood, people of their own blood …), being bound to the necromancer. You basically made up a problem that none has and solved it by applying basic concepts that nearly everyone already uses. Wow. The problem you descried applies more to holy casters than necromancers.

While this is a very interesting and informative video, I cannot help but think, that it greatly limit's ones imagination. Metals arem't the only materials you can mess around with. I want to specifically highlight Petricite for this. It appears in the lore of League of Legends. It is similar to stone, but has magic absorbing abilities. Technically, Petricite is wood fossil, but that's not important. What is important is it's effect on the lore. There is a nation called demacia. This nation is built on Petricite. Why? It's because the people, who created Demacia were fleeing from a "magic war". They wanted to protect themselves from the warring mages and other arcane beings. Thus they built their cities out of Petricite. These cities not only protected people who couldn't use magic, but those who could as well. With time however, the people forgot that the walls were there to stop warring mages and instead came to believe, that the walls were there to stop mages of all kinds. And thus mages became targeted. Hunted, imprisoned, experimented upon and killed. With time mages had enough and a rebellion broke out, which resulted in the death of the ruling monarch. Since then the country has been in constant turmoil. (Quick addition: there are some statues made of Peteicite by a specific craftsman, which come alive if they are exposed to enough magic.) I told you this story, because I want to highlight, that metal is by far not the only material you can work with in a fantasy setting. It can hurt you a lot if you restrict yourself to metals.

I like this video, but there's something very important you didn't mention: a lot of these practices, which have ancient roots, are still around today. Writers who take inspiration from these forms of magic need to research carefully to make sure they aren't reinforcing stereotypes or making a mockery of the culture and beliefs of real, living people. I, myself, practice witchcraft; every time I see a fantasy story with a cackling witch chucking fireballs around, I can't help but feel a bit insulted. Cultural appropriation is another thing writers should keep in mind.

Loving this video, it's making us want to dig up and retouch an old worldbuilding project of mine. The initial ideas (it had two of them) was "what if nukes, but magic?" and "what if protogens (cyborg species someone else made designed to do labour that gained sapience), but fantasy?". This then evolved into a magic system that's used through engineering, and overall themes about corporate greed. Looking back on the setting, I got sidetracked on the lore about the world before armageddon. I was planning on moving away from the worldbuilding tool I was using anyways, so that should let me put more focus on the wasteland again.

Thank you for the idea of a deposit upturning kingdoms, it would work so well in a setting of mine. One little element of the setting is a substance called Ichor. On paper it's just a fantasy equivalent to oil and is processed into a weird plastic equivalent which has a strong "Arcanic Grain" to it, meaning it forces magic energy along one path. The thing is that it's kind of the body of deities, as how those work in the setting is that worshipping a deity means you lend it a bit of your soul, and soul stuff needs a physical thing to be attached to. The idea of deposits of ichor forming under grand temples and such was already bumping around my head, but somehow never thought of barons conquering these places just for the Ichor.

Necromancy is pretty fuckin overused. I legit check out when a game or story goes down that route

Usually there is no reason for why a necromancer character should raise a dead character, unless like Alan Quatermass the dead character is needed again. As Painfactory states there must be a clear motive behind resurrecting the dead characters - if there is none, you have no motive, and should then back away from using a necromancer character.

i use arcanium, durilium, adamantium, titanium (mithril), on top of meteoric steel and a bunch of arcanium alloys

So here's an idea. The metal in question is not a naturally occuring metal. It is an alloy, of multiple different metals both common and rare. The weapons crafted with this metal have no greater durability, lightness, or anything like that, but they do have one EXTREMELY significant property. The soul of a person dispatched by such weapon, will be able to avoid the divine judgement, and gain themself a place in heaven. This makes it so that whenever a weapon of such make appears, people that posses great fortunes and power, will fight over the ownership of the item. Those weapons were known to be a catalyst to demise of entire kingdoms, therefore they're creation is strictly prohibited, and the secret of their manufacturing remains as one of the greatest secrets to the world.

In my story Necromancy isnt only magic. Its needed to conservate corpses, to prepare them und even to craft strong bodys fiting well for the unliving. To awake them with magic is only the last step.

The way necromancers in my book work is by sacrificing their own life force to create a hollow mockery of it in corpses. The amount that they can do this is very limited

This is one of my biggest problems rn is the why and how i find myself overthinking and trying to keep things grounded but even in real life there is no structure and order i just cant decide how i want to throw in sci fi with fantasy

In Dwarf Fortress, the end result of most worlds that you let it generate a long history for, either undead take over the world, or they are exterminated completely. Usually the first one. The Undead just have more staying power, by definition.

I'm partially done with a story where all mortal magic requires iron implements (wand tips, staff caps, even daggers and jewelry) made by alchemically distilling human blood for the metal content. They work best if it's one's own blood, or the blood of family, but the qualification "necromancer" comes from doing blood sacrifice en mass, and overcoming this restriction with volume and brute force. The major antagonists are the fey, who need no iron (and in fact can be poisoned by even "normal iron" properly forged, and even simple iron gates will usually keep them away from your house. ..it won't stop them summoning bears or monsters to remove the offending article however ...

I have necromancer in my story too.. plan for a trilogy or duology for him. how he will reborn to avenge those people who murder him in previous life. He begin with a negative arc to redemption
