Loved them in the 70s growing up. Could only get my hands on five or six though. I used to periodically bother the kids librarian for "Robert A Arthur" books but there weren't many more lurking in our regional system. I'd heard of kids reading Encyclopedia Brown but these were my mystery reads. Then it was on to Bradbury, Asimov, Brooks, Anthony and so on. Now, until on a whim I threw the Three Investigators into CZcams tonight, I'd no idea of how many titles existed and that there had been TV adaptations! Thanks for recalling that fantastic joy of reading titles like these back in the day. I miss it. Can't concentrate to read much these last couple decades.

Oh man, this series. My elementary school library had about 10 of the original hardcover books, and nothing else on the shelves could compare. The highlight of third grade was getting a lovely letter from M.V. Carey after I wrote her to say how much I loved the books.

I can't express how much I loved these books. Such a pity they have vanished from popularity among their target readership. Incidentally, that Terror Castle you are holding is the first one I read having randomly bougt it at a jumble sale; within a year I had loads of them.

I too fell in love with mystery after devouring this series. I visited the public library every week with my third grade class and got the next one. Amazingly enough, as an adult I was lucky enough to buy that very collection of hardbacks when the library was discarding them. Bittersweet, since I’d rather have a new generation of kids have them to read. Now, I’m a mystery author myself and writing new mysteries for kids.

Welcome back! Sadly, I discovered your channel after your hiatus. Just before finishing your last video, however, I was alerted to your recent posting and was very glad to see your return. Please know that while there are many booktubers who discuss horror novels, you are one of the very few I've found that talk about and recommend my favored subgenre of ghost stories. For this alone, I would thank you, though there is so much more to enjoy about your channel. Your recommended books are slowly finding homes on my shelves, having just recently received my copy of 'Curious Warnings, the Complete Ghost Stories of M. R. James'. As to Agatha Christie, I concur wholeheartedly. Growing up I devoured her stories and later became an avid fan of David Suchet's series of TV adaptations. I also enjoyed 'The Pale Horse' adaptation and the really well-done eerie feeling that came over me as I watched it. I am currently reading a short ghost story called 'How Love Came to Professor Guildea' by Robert S. Hichens. I do hope to see more of your videos soon. You are appreciated and have had a real impact on my reading choices. Thank you for reawakening my love of mystery and for the things that go bump in the night.

It's been said that the original contained clues such that the reader could solve the mystery, and that the solution was different from what the author later explained in a posthumously published epilog. I believe we can't trust writers regarding what they later say were their intentions, or even what they say contemporaneously, because writers like to play with their audiences. The solution promoted by the analyst was quite prosaic: a rock slide that buried and hid the victims, covering its own traces.

Thank you for this! I grew up reading this series in grade school and it left a major mark on my life. I always think of it fondly but haven’t read the series in decades! The rock almost claims the girls for itself - they have become native girls.

  • @PeterShieldsukcatstripey

Yes the rock is like a character isn't it.

  • @PeterShieldsukcatstripey

Beautiful caring moments between Albert and Mike as they try to find those girls. Leda and the swan imagery throughout this novel paints a picture of a monolithic force (like chronos time) ready to destroy innocence (the swan).

You Sir are spot on! The best of the old classics make a great effort to build the environment and draw you in. Even in the very short stories you can "taste the dust" and "feel the chill" before you are confronted by some aspect of the supernatural. Much better than having a "bucket of guts" thrown all over you.
