Metro Trains Melbourne Siemens Nexas
After a bit of a hiatus on reviews in general, and with some train reviews, I thought it was the right time to jump onboard one of the more unique train types in Melbourne, the Siemens Nexas.
Its amazing to think that early units are about 20 years old now, and with the refresh, they still feel quite modern, and have some excellent accessibility features. Come and join me for the journey!

State of the Plan S2 E2 - Getting ready for uni
zhlédnutí 363Před rokem
After a few weeks hiatus on the video front, thanks to a busy period with work, I wanted to get back into things with the next State of The Plan video in the series. February is a common time for university students to commence degrees, so I thought it would be fitting for that to be the topic of this month's episode! State of the Plan is a series that I aim to produce monthly, covering key pla...

After a few weeks break at Christmas time, I thought it would be good to showcase one of the key transport changes since I moved away from Brisbane, a fully wheelchair accessible (timetabled) railbus network. Thompson's now has a large fleet of these ex-Ventura Mercedes Benz O405NH's, which have become staples of railbus operations, with low entry boarding and alighting and a typical city bus i...

After what has been quite a long hiatus, I wanted to get back to some more 'actually talking planning' videos, as a bit of a new year's resolution. So, here goes! This very bus (or its twin) used to be my school bus back in the 90s! These two Volvos were the first low floor buses in Bundy, acquired at the beginning of 1998. One was used on the Bargara run. Just imagine, 50 odd sweaty school kids in the middle of summer. Poor driver. His name was Henry and he seemed to always score the new buses. Before these, it was the first of the two Scania L113CRLs and a year later in 1999 the first of the two Scania L94UBs that you also reviewed. I still remember that new bus smell. We all thought they were so much better than the Domino GM6V71s they replaced. Some advances were an auto gearbox, indicators that you didn’t have to turn off manually, electric wipers that worked as opposed to the mental compressed air ones, FM radio so we could actually listen to decent music and the seats had a kind of velour material. Not sure when it got changed to the red vinyl. Back then Duffy also owned a handful of Denning long distance coaches which sometimes substituted on the school runs while the city buses were out for maintenance. The air con in those coaches was a godsend. A real treat, then after a couple of days it was back to sweating.

  • @davidruslan3533

Love how you used the term “old school”. Makes me feel so old! These two Scanias were acquired in early 1999 and looked badass compared to the Leyland Leopards and Dominos that Duffys had back then. They were the second pair of low floor buses, after the two Volvos acquired a year earlier. This one was my school bus in year 12 and the seats were all velour back then. A blue colour. AFAIK they remain in the fleet and I believe are the last remaining non AC buses in that company, which is no longer Duffy’s as it was sold to Kinetic in 2022. You mentioned the Brisbane buses. I still remember when it was a really rare treat to score an air conditioned bus (Volvo and later Scania) in Brissie, back in the first few years of this century. Doesn’t feel all that long ago.

As someone who uses these trains a lot (from Dungog). I don't see a massive problem with the seats, although they could be better. It is a public train. Personally I like the Endeavors a bit more because I feel that they have better ride quality along with generally less intense lighting; but overall I like the Hunter Railcars and I would say that the Dungog part of the Hunter Line might be one of the most beautiful parts of the network. At least where i've traveled. In conclusion, Great Video.

Steam finished on Brisbane suburban workings as a normal thing, in about 1969, so it's hardly "a few years ago that steam engines were still in use." Brisbane had planned to go electric back in the 1960s, hence the 15 SX sets (36 to 51 inclusive). These were only insulated for 1500v DC, so were never full electric trains in their own right. They were hauled regularly by 3900 class electric locos, for some years. I remember getting 3901 and set 36 from Manly one morning. Please don't knock stuff that was around long before you were born, as you did with the wooden cars by so rudely calling them "Red Rattlers." That was a derogatory name that started in Melbourne and is commonly used by people who can't be bothered finding out the proper names for things. In this case the cars were called Evans sets, or even "Dog Boxes," but never that filthy RR word! 🤬🤬 I rode in them in service in Brisbane and later in preservation. The EMUs are now the oldest suburban trains in Australia, but are still doing quite fine, as did the SX sets for over 30 years.

@TalkingPlanning Great video of a former favourite. Good to see another finding new life interstate. The Designline Orbitor batch that Ventura originally ordered (Ex 562-573) which included this one had the gearboxes set up to provide higher RPM output when accelerating to highway speed above 45 k/ph, as can be heard from @04:04 , hence why the gearbox will power harder in the higher up gears. As an example, the engine is at 1800RPM at @04:24 when the gearbox changes from 5th gear into 6th gear.

The bus lines own Network Officers are hardly in sight anymore, which astounds me given how much Translink wasted hiring them. I regularly catch the Kippa-Ring/Redcliffe services and always usually sit up the front just behind the driver (esp nightime) given the ferals that come on board that hide up the back.

Tangara also my favourite train but when I am inside of the tangara I can feel a bit sick. I don't know why but I think it's because they are starting to show there age. Maybe also because when the seats are all full the narrow path way I have to stand up and when my family's on the seats and I'm standing I think it's so unfair and uncomfortable and you can't flip the seats a 3 is fair fixed seats are a bit disappointed for longer journeys but ex g sets have similar seats to the Oscar h set seats and you can move them 5 is the score. I think the seats on the h set are more comfortable than you think. I don't really like the d sets because you can't move the seats.
