This is a scene that shows those men, as individuals, had the courage of Gods. That being said, this made absolutely no sense from any tactical perspective and the man who approved it should be court martialed. You cannot, under any circumstances as a leader, send your men into a situation where there is a 100% chance they will fail and die, even if they volunteer. Even a rearguard action has to have a chance of people escaping, and has to be comprised fully of volunteers. Black Hawk Down is not an example of American excellence, it's an example of a colossal American failure in both tactics and intelligence.

The best part is when they ask for permission to go in and set up a perimeter knowing full well they will most likely die, they just would rather die with Durant then leave him to die alone. A saying I've heard used to explain ppl like Gordon and Shugart is, that there are some ppl who will die for you and those who will die with you. Both are brave and honorable ppl, but to die saving someone means that your death at least saved someone else. To go in knowing they will most likely die with him and having no hesitation, even the AC points out that they hav a better view on the situation then anyone else and they know what they are asking for, true heroes deserving of the Medals of honor they got and without them Durant nvr would hav survived they kept the truly fanatical ppl back long enough for the real soldiers to show up who recognized he was worth more as a hostage then just as a dead body bc none of those charging in at first wanted to do anything but rip them all apart and kill them.
